I frantically killed the call, but my phone fell down and rolled into the room through the crack of the door. When I looked up, Christopher was already coming up to me, obviously realizing I was here.
I tried to run away, but Monica was faster. She ran out in tears, but she froze for a moment when she saw me. Then, she got even sadder and ran away with her face in her hands. This time, I could hear her muffled sobs even though she was already some distance away from us.
I felt like banging my head against the wall. I got caught both times in the act. Man, Iâm an id*ot.
Christopher leaned against the doorframe, smirking at me. âCome in,â he said.
âHuh, the moonâs looking mighty fine tonight, Chris. Iâm just here for some moon-sighting. I canât sleep, you see. Well, you do your stuff. Iâll be going now.â
I smiled awkwardly, but I was cursing my stupidity inside. What sort of an excuse was that? I obviously saw Monica trying to seduce him! Then I had a bad feeling about it, so I looked up. Wh-Why is he looking at me like he wants to gobble me up? I could feel him taking my clothes off with his eyes, much to my terror.
âSo, do you need anything?â
âOh, you left your phone back in the room, so I send it for you. Sean called you. Iâll be going back to my room now. Donât stay up too late.â I scurried off like I had seen a ghost, but no matter how fast I tried to run, I couldnât outrun Christopher.
Christopher dragged me all the way to his room, while I stared down guiltily all the way, like a child who was caught stealing. âUm, itâs getting late, Chris. Itâs almost bedtime, so can I get back to sleep? We have to pick Sabrinaâs wedding gown for her tomorrow.â
Christopher put me on his lap. âSo you heard everything.â
I wanted to lie, but I knew he could see through me, so I nodded. âYes, I did.â
âSo you saw Monica stripping herself too.â
âYes.â Then, Christopher smacked my butt. âDonât you think of getting off the hook! You should have barged in when you saw that, but you didnât.â
âW-Well, thatâs because I trust you.â I scratched my head uneasily. It was normal getting hugged by Christopher, but doing it in his home felt uncomfortable for me.
Noticing how uneasy I was, Christopher patted my back to calm me down. âDonât worry about it. Sure, my familyâs powerful, but itâs not as complex as you think it is. My motherâs still trying to think this through, but sheâll calm down once she gets over it.â
âSo what about Monicaâs mother?â I asked. âCan you tell me more about her?â
âIt happened back when I was a kid. I was five years old, and my dad was the governor back then. He crossed someone he shouldnât, and they tried to sabotage him so he would lose his position. They hired someone to crash into my mom. It was supposed to be an empty threat for my dad, but Monicaâs mom was there too. She pushed my mom out of the way and was sent flying, then she died in the hospital.â
I was starting to feel sad after hearing the story. No wonder Juliaâs so stubborn about this. This isnât something she can repay so easily. âBut you said no to Monica⦠How are you going to break this to your mom?â
âYou can call her mom since weâre already married.â Christopher patted my head like I was a kid. Then, he took a lollipop out of the tableâs drawer and stuffed it into my mouth after he unwrapped it.
âSheâll calm down with time. Monica will get it eventually. Donât tell me you want to back out again, you dummy. Do it and Iâll spank you until kingdom come.â
âOf course I wonât!â I chose to stand on the side of love this time. Nobody could stop me and Christopher now, but there was something bothering me. I looked at Christopher. âDid you really fall for me back then? Why?â
âTake a guess,â Christopher said mysteriously.
âDammit. I knew you were lying. I would have remembered it if I had known you then.â I puffed my cheeks.
