JASPERS POV The next day was overwhelming. Vie and I crashed in the first room we found, after Iâd located the kitchen and whipped up some food for us. As much as I would have loved to extend our morning cuddles, I had a job to do. And that job consisted of first meeting with my new Beta and Gamma for my first official pack business.
âWhat is this?â I pointed to a spot on a map of Silver Moon territory that King had dug up. Heâd had to add some rough sketches around the edges to update it, but it worked for now. He peered over my shoulder.
âThat area is for training. Theres a building here,â He pointed, âWith all our equipment.â
I drew a circle around the area with a red marker. âIâll be wanting to check that out. How would you both say the warriors are?â
âHonestly? They could use some work.â Ashwell said.
âWhatâs the training schedule like?â
âEr⦠Well, there isnât really a scheduleâ¦â He rubbed the back of his neck. âExcept for the kids, you know? Everyone else trains, kind of when they want?â
I rolled my eyes. âOkay, well that stops soon. I wonât make a solid schedule yet, with everything else going on. But Iâll draw one up. Thatâll be your area.â I nodded at him.
âThat works for me.â Ashwell nodded.
âExcuse me Alpha?â Tracy appeared at the door, smiling brightly. âAnother stack for you.â
âGreat. Thanks Tracy, just put them beside the others.â
We were in Warricks old office. The room had been full of things that Iâd already sent down to be added to the âTo Be Soldâ pile. After a thorough once over, all that remained was the desk with the two bookshelves, a few books, a lamp, and four comfortable chairs. I had no use for any sentimental items of his. Though King did suggest I keep a few of the books, pointing out which ones Kiren liked to read. And he was welcome to them, whenever he came home.
âThe pack sure is making this easy on us.â King picked up the new stack of papers.
âIâll say.â
Instead of making rounds as I had promised, people had taken it upon themselves to instead bring their lists right to the packhouse. Clearly, everyone was eager for a change.
King whistled as his eyes scanned a page. âDamn. I had no idea the Roys place was in such bad shape.â He frowned.
âLet me see.â I held my hand out for the parchment.
Roof collapsed in bathroom Roof collapsed in kitchen- Appliances no longer work Shingles torn off in storms Floors rotted In need of new clothes-Womans, kids female, men In need of food The list actually wasnât all that different from many others Iâd read so far.
âHow are we going to pay for all this? The amount of materials weâll need donât come cheap.â Ashwell said.
âViolet is working on selling stuff from the house.â
âThat wonât cover everything.â
My frowned deepened. âI know.â I sighed. âAnd the income weâll accumulate from farming again wonât happen for a while either.â
I sank into the chair behind the desk, rubbing my forehead. Iâd been Alpha less than a week, and I already felt the stress of the job. I was running out of options. I couldnât just conger enough funds out of thin air. Sighing heavily, I reached for the phone.
âWho you calling?â Ashwell asked.
âThe Alpha of B***d Moon.â I dialed the number Iâd memorized and put the phone to my ear.
âHello?â
âHey Dimitri.â
âJasper?â
âYeah.â
âHow are you? How are things over there?â
I laughed once. âItâs⦠Well, itâs been interesting so far.â
âHow is Violet?â
âSheâs good.â
âGood to hear. What can I do for you?â
âUhm⦠Actually, I was calling for some advice.â
âOh?â
I lowered my head, embarrassed. âYeah. Silver Moon is in worse shape than we thought. Almost everyone needs some type of repair on their homes, and nobody has enough food, except Warricks buddies. Weâre working on that though.â
âGo on.â
âI⦠I just wanted to ask you how I should go about this. Where I should start, how I should organize.â I flipped through the papers on the desk. âI really hate to admit it, but Iâm pretty in over my head here, and-â
âJasper, calm down son. I get it.â
I swallowed. âYou do?â
âOf course I do. Do you know how much help I had when I took over as Alpha? Violets Uncle Killian was a lifesaver. You sound embarrassed to be calling me, but you donât need to be. I told you I was here for you guys, when ever.â
âI know. But Iâve been here all of one day.â I sighed again.
Dimitri laughed into the receiver. âYouâre already doing better than me then. I reached out to Killian about two hours after my ceremony.â
I chuckled. âI guess Iâm ahead of the curve then. I just figured Iâd know this stuff.â
âIâll let you in on a little secret- No Alpha ever knows what heâs doing, not at first. Hell, there are days I still get overwhelmed.â
âThanks Dimitri. That helps, actually.â
âNo problem. So what exactly is going on?â
I filled him in on everything since we arrived. He listened carefully, and I caught the distinct sound of a pen scraping across paper as I talked.
âHmm⦠Iâll tell you what,â He said when I was finished, âThereâs not a lot going on here right now. Ben and I can come to Silver Moon for a while, help out. We can discuss further when Iâm there.â
I wanted to say no, that I could handle it without him. But really, who was I kidding?
âYou sure?â
âYes. We can be there by this afternoon.â
âAlright. Thank you Dimitri.â
âAnytime. I want you to know Jasper, that an Alpha who tries to everything by himself, is an Alpha who will ultimately fail. Nobody can do it all by themselves.â
âThanks Dimitri. Iâll remember that. See you soon.â
âBye.â
We hung up. Ashwell and King looked at me expectantly, having heard the conversation.
âGuess we better get some rooms cleared out.â I said.
âHeâs right you know.â Ashwell nodded at me. âNobody can do this alone. Youâre not weak for reaching out for help.â
âItâs not like we canât use all the help we can get.â King added.
âThanks guys.â I smiled at them. âCan you see to the rooms being prepared? Iâll find Vie and let her know about our coming guests.â
âSure.â
âNo problem.â
We left the office, going our separate ways. I found Tracy, who was humming cheerily to herself, and asked her to show me where Violet was. She agreed happily, skipping ahead of me. I shook my head; The girl had to have an extremely positive outlook on things, given the circumstances. Her home had been falling apart for Goddess knew how long, yet she walked around with a smile on her face. I couldnât deny I admired that about her though.
She led me to a small room on the far side of the house where Violet was having lunch with an older pack member. She beamed up at me, dimples popping out.
âAnother stack of lists should be coming soon. Iâll put them on your desk Alpha.â
âThanks Tracy.â
She danced away as I opened the door. Violet and her companion looked up at my entrance.
âHey. What are you doing here?â
âI came to find you.â I stood behind a chair. âMay I join you?â
âOf course Alpha.â The man replied.
I took a seat. The table was laid with finger sandwiches, a salad, juice, water, and vegetables. Also, a neater pile of papers in front of Violet than what I had upstairs.
âWeâre expecting guests this afternoon.â I told her.
âWho?â
âYour Dad actually. And Beta Ben.â I grabbed a sandwich.
Vie raised her eyebrows. âYou called him?â
I nodded. âOriginally, for advice. He offered to come.â
âAlright.â She gestured to the older man. âJasper, this is Greg. Heâs my go-to guy for all things farming related.â
We shook hands as he chuckled. âIâm just experienced dear.â
âThatâs what I said.â
âSo the fields are useable?â I asked.
âOh, yes. Not just the fields though.â Greg said.
âI was going to find you soon. Weâve been discussing sources of income for the pack.â Vie handed me a sheet. I looked it over.
âFruit?â I looked at them.
Greg nodded. âThe South of the pack. There is a great deal of apple trees.â
âOpening a factory in the future would not only create a lot of jobs, but a great source of income for the pack.â Vie smiled.
âA factory forâ¦?â I inquired.
âThat can be decided at a later date. I guess it depends on the skills of the people. You can make all sorts of things with apples.â
âHow did you plan to outsource it?â
âI was thinking of reaching out to human communities, as well as neighboring packs.â
I raised a brow. âYou want to sell to humans?â
âWhy not?â She countered.
âI think thatâs a really great idea.â I grinned at her. âNot a lot of packs sell to humans. Not a lot of competition. Itâs smart.â
She returned my smile. âThat was my thought process too.â
âI think you two will do great things for Silver Moon.â Greg said. âIâm glad an old fart like me is around to see it.â
âOh Greg. Youâre not that old!â Violet exclaimed.
âKeep saying that Luna, and I might come to believe it.â He wiped his hands on a napkin, standing. âI should be off. You have the list?â
âRight here.â Vie waved a paper.
âGreat. Call me if you need me. Alpha.â He nodded respectfully to me.
âThank you Greg. I hope to see you soon.â I said.
âOh, you will. I plan to utilize his knowledge greatly.â Vie said.
Once we were alone, I took the time to look over everything sheâd done so far. I could feel her eyes on me as she ate, and I clicked my tongue.
âStaring is rude.â I teased.
âSomething is bothering you.â She stated. âTell me.â
I set aside her work, meeting her eyes. âIâm a little embarrassed I had to call your Dad for help.â
âYou shouldnât be embarrassed about that.â
âSo he told me.â
âThen listen to him. Dad didnât get to be where he is all alone.â
I smirked. âYou sound just like him, you know.â
She grimaced. âUgh.â
I laughed. âHonestly, I donât even know where to start. This packâ¦â
âIs a mess. I know.â
We were silent for a while. Violet picked at her food while I was lost in my own thoughts.
âI was thinkingâ¦â She pulled my attention back to her.
âYeah?â
She looked at the door before continuing. She lowered her voice, âI was thinking that maybe I could help. With myâ¦magic.â
âMy forehead creased. âHow so?â
âIâm not sure. But like Aunt Clara said, I canât leave it locked away forever. Iâm going to have to learn to use it sometime.â She glanced up at me through her lashes. âUnless you think itâs too dangerous. The last thing I want to do is hurt the pack more.â
I thought about it. âI trust you. And I trust that you wouldnât do anything that would damage anyone or anything. If the time comes, you donât need my permission.â
âIâm not asking permission.â She flicked a cucumber from her salad at me. I popped it in my mouth. âBut I wanted to let you know. In case⦠I canât control it.â
âIâll be there to help you. I promise.â
âOkay.â
She relaxed in her chair. I stood, walking around to k**s the top of her head.
âI love you.â
âI love you too.â She grabbed another paper, sighing. âHere. This is a list of names of the people who work here. I want to give the jobs back to the people Warrick got rid of, but that means losing some of the blondes.â She huffed.
âThey should know we canât keep all of them.â I said taking it from her.
âI feel like more people are going to yell at me.â
For the next hour and a half, we worked on the list, agreeing together on who to keep and who to lose. Both of us agreed on keeping Tracy, if she wanted to stay. Likewise, neither of us were keen on keeping Stacey. The girl creeped me out.
âWhat about Marian?â I asked.
âI talked to one of the families earlier, they use to work in the kitchen.â She pointed to two names. âThey said Marian never worked in the packhouse. They werenât even sure how she ended up out there with them.â
âI see.â I circled Marians name, opting to decide about her later. Ultimately, it was her choice if she wanted a job here or not. âIâm demolishing those shacks.â
âGood. They never needed to be there anyway.â
âWhat needed to be where?â A voice came from behind us.
âUncle Ben!â Violet jumped out of her seat, running around the table and launching herself into his arms.
âHey kiddo!â
Ben stood in the doorway with Dimitri, and Tracy who for once looked rather intimidated.
âDo I get a hello?â Dimitri asked his daughter.
âHi Dad.â
He pouted, shaking his head. I made my way to them.
âThanks for coming.â I said as we shook hands.
âWhere can we talk?â He got straight to business.
âIâve been using Warricks office. This way. Thanks Tracy, I got it from here.â
She nodded, leaving us. Wrapping my arm around Vies shoulder, I led the way back to the office. The three of them looked around as we walked, until Ben snorted loudly.
âWhy is there so much junk in here?â
âAnnd and her mate hadâ¦unique tastes.â Violet explained.
âWeâre gathering everything that can be sold.â I added.
Ben stopped in front of a painting, eyeing it for a minute. Then he lifted it off the wall and tucked it under his arm. Violet shook her head, while her Dad rolled his eyes.
âWhat? Itâs an original piece! Clara will love it!â
âYouâre paying us for that, you know.â Vie threw over her shoulder.
âSeriously? Iâm family.â
âWhich is why Iâll give it to you at a lower price.â
âPfft. Fine.â
Stopping at the door, I let Dimitri and Ben go in first. Violet sank into a chair, crossing her legs, while I took the seat behind the desk.
âAlright. Letâs see what weâre working with.â Dimitri said. I handed him a few lists. He paced as he read them, handing them to Ben when he was done. âIâll be honest Jasper, I thought you were exaggerating. Thisâ¦â He growled. âHow could Warrick have let all this happen?â
âItâs not all bad, Dad.â Violet spoke up. âYou should see his friends houses.â She scoffed.
âOh, I did.â He looked at me. âWhatâs the plan for that?â
âIâm leaving that up to Violet.â
âVie?â
She put her hands behind her head. âI plan to evict them.â
Dimitri raised his brows. âAnd then?â
âAll but two will be demolished. The two closest to packhouse will be remodeled into safe houses during attacks or emergencies.â
Pride radiated from the Alpha. âThatâs my girl.â He turned back to me. âThereâs a lot we need to talk about. The most important thing though, will require your Beta and Gamma to be here.â
I sat up in my seat. âWhatâs that?â
âAn alliance. Iâll need their signatures as well as yours.â
