âDid Declan make it?â I ask Everly, balancing the phone between my shoulder and ear as I pack my bag for the arena. Tonight is the second game of our three-game road trip. Weâre heading home tomorrow, and I can finally sigh a breath of relief. Being away and making sure Everly is doing what sheâs supposed to is even more stressful than being there.
âYeah. He brought dinner and is trying to help me with my homework.â
âTrying?â
âWe couldnât figure out this stupid accounting assignment, but itâs fine. It isnât due until next Monday.â
I lift my face away from the phone to the guys. Ash, Leo, Maverick, and Jack are watching TV in my and Mavâs room. âCan anyone help Ev with accounting?â
Without looking up from the screen, Leo calls, âI got this one.â
He stands and walks backward to the phone.
âWeâll be back tomorrow night, probably around eight. Make sure the house isnât a wreck. We might be staying there but it isnât ours.â
Ash says something from his spot on the couch, but I ignore him. No matter how welcoming heâs been, I donât want to take advantage.
âI know. I know. Iâm eighteen, not eight.â Iâd bet anything that Everlyâs rolling her eyes as she says it.
âDid Piper go home?â
âYeah. She left when Declan got here.â
I want to ask more, but Leo is waiting so instead I say, âHereâs Leo.â
She sends a FaceTime request and I hand the phone over and watch as my teammate smiles at my sister. âWhatâs up, Little Sharpie?â
While they work on Evâs homework, I finish packing and then take Leoâs seat in front of the TV.
Ash eyes me carefully. âYou look stressed.â
âIâm never having kids,â I mutter and drop my head back.
They all laugh at me like they think Iâm kidding. Iâm not sure I am. How do people do this?
I stare ahead at the TV, not really watching, until Leo tosses my phone in my lap.
âGet it worked out?â I ask.
âPiece of cake.â
I let out a long breath. âThank you. I appreciate it.â
âAny time.â
Jack laughs. âAre you kidding? Lohan lives for this shit.â
âAny chance to show off his big brain,â Ash adds.
Leo flips them both off. âTime to go, boys.â
Iâm the last to get to my feet as I hover over Piperâs name on my phone. I donât have time to come up with anything grand. Itâs real possible sheâs blocked me anyway.
Thank you for staying with Everly. I appreciate it, Pipes.
I hit send and wait a beat to see if Iâll get something back. While I am thankful, Iâm glad for an excuse to reach out to her. Maybe this time sheâll even respond.
We touch down in Minnesota right on time. I never thought much about arrival times until Everly came to stay with me. Now I have to know when and where and schedule things way in advance.
But I made it work againâsomehow. We picked up two points with our win against Arizona this afternoon, too. All in all, a great freaking trip and I can breathe easy.
âAre you boys ready to celebrate?â Jack asks as we get off the plane. He rests a hand on Leoâs shoulder and squeezes. âThe man of the night.â
âI appreciate you letting us use your house,â Leo says.
Jack shakes his head. âHappy to. Mav? Sharpie? You guys coming?â
âIâm not sure yet,â I say. âI need to swing by the house and check on Everly.â
We disperse. Most of the guys are going to Jackâs for Leo and Scarlettâs engagement party, but I donât feel great about leaving Everly alone again tonight when Iâve been gone for the last few days, even if itâs just a couple of houses down the street.
Declan calls as Iâm driving home.
âHey,â I answer. âEverything okay?â
His chuckle comes over the speakers. âYeah. Didnât mean to worry you, but I wanted you to be the first to know that the doctor cleared me to play in Tuesdayâs game.â
âThatâs great.â I fall quiet as I let the news sink in, and I realize why heâs telling me first. âYou wonât be able to keep an eye on Everly anymore while Iâm gone.â
âYeah,â he says the word slowly. âIâm sorry.â
âNo, no. Itâs great news for you and for the team. Thank you for everything youâve done.â
After saying our goodbyes, I hang up and finish the drive. Ash isnât here yet and the house is dark.
âEv?â I call as I walk through the downstairs. I head upstairs, but her door is closed, lights out. I shower and change, assuming sheâll come out to say hello by the time Iâm done. She doesnât.
I knock on her bedroom door, but thereâs no answer. I open it an inch. âEv?â
Her room is empty.
âThatâs weird,â I say out loud to myself.
I call her as I head back downstairs to recheck the rooms. Panic starts to rise when she doesnât answer, and I canât find her anywhere in the house. I check every room, even Ashâs. I come up short when he fills the doorway.
âHey.â Heâs already changed and has a beer in one hand.
âHave you seen Everly?â
âSheâs not here.â He takes a drink. âThereâs a note on the fridge.â
I backtrack to the kitchen and tear off the top Post-it with her note. Out with River. Be back by midnight.
I call her phone, but thereâs no answer. I send a text and wait. All while Ash leans against the counter, drinking his beer.
âYou look like your head is going to explode.â Fucker smirks at me.
âI canât stand that dude. I donât trust him.â
âEv can handle herself.â Ash hands me a beer. âYou just got a night off, man. Enjoy it.â
âDeclanâs back. Heâs playing next week.â
âNo shit?â Ashâs smile pulls higher, then falls. âOh shit. Ev.â
âYeah.â
He shrugs. âMaybe she doesnât need someone checking in on her. Sheâs mostly stayed out of trouble, and she is eighteen.â
âItâs only been a couple of weeks since she destroyed school property, or have you already forgotten?â I shake my head. âShe needs someone looking out for her. Someone she can trust and that will keep her in check.â
âAny ideas?â
âOne,â I admit.
Ash bites back laughter. âPiper? She hates you.â
âBut she doesnât hate Everly.â
