I walk outside my house, unsure how Iâm getting to school. I never heard from Ella about who would be driving me. I know, deep down, it wonât be Jace. Still, a part of me is holding out hope.
I notice movement out of the corner of my eye and turn to find Grady running toward me as he hollers my name. Wrapping me in a bear hug, he says, âHoly shit, youâre back. I didnât know. I had all this extra stuff I had to do yesterday, but today Iâm all yours. Tell me all about New York, about yourself. You have really grown up, Mila.â
My cheeks heat at his words.
Grady pulls away from me and looks at what Iâm wearing. Once again, Iâm in jean shorts and a tank, which is showing off some nice cleavage. His eyes pause on my neckline before raking down to my bare legs. Itâs gonna be a hot day.
âYouâre my driver?â I point to a white sedan on the street, assuming itâs his car.
âI drew the short straw. Sorry, Mimi, you get me today.â
My ears catch on the old nickname. Heâs the only one to ever call me that. I hated it when I was younger, but now I canât wipe the grin from my face.
âSo, I got football training after school, like always, but I finish at six. If you have something after school, or you wanna wait around and watch me pump weights and run drillsââhe wiggles his brows at meââyouâre more than welcome to stay.â
I tap my finger on my chin, as if Iâm really contemplating it. âI donât knowâ¦thatâs not very enticing, a bunch of sweaty guys and their big muscles sounds ,â I jest with a wink. âDo any of these practices end up with you tackling Jace and putting him on his ass? Because if so, Iâm so in.â
Grady lets out a huge laugh. âIâll see what I can do, Mimi.â
The ride to school isnât long enough to catch up, but itâs still great. Iâm mostly grateful Grady isnât pissed at me. We donât talk about Jace, just about football, his parents and their romantic weekends, and how sad his love life is.
Which is hard to believe. Heâs attractive, and Iâm sure heâs exaggerating that his love life is sad while, in reality, his sex life is on fire. Because thereâs no way girls donât throw themselves at him.
Thereâs a guy waiting for him when we pull up. His bag is slung over his back, and heâs wearing cute black-rimmed glasses. Heâs not a football player, but heâs obviously friends with Grady.
âMakai, meet my neighbor and old friend Mila. She just moved back from New York.â
Makai, who is cute in a nerdy way, gives me a small smile and wave. They walk in with me, talking about some Xbox game they both have; I havenât a clue what theyâre saying but they obviously enjoy gaming with each other. They leave me to go to their lockers.
Iâm floating as I walk to my locker and find it on the first try. I almost cheer, happy I studied the map this morning over breakfast. Iâd just grabbed my books and closed my locker door when I feel the air change around me.
âYouâre fucking a King?â
I spin to see Jace, Hunter, and Roman behind me in the hall. Their seething expressions causes me to press my back against the locker. Iâve never seen them like this before.
What the hell are they talking about, fucking a King?
âAsher James, wide receiver for Lakeview Prep Kings.â The way Hunter spits out makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. His eyes flash with anger.
âYou should have gone to Lakeview. You canât be here and fuck with a King,â Jace warns me, and thatâs when I notice we have an audience.
Is he for real? Why would he even thinkâ¦oh, fuck. âYouâre spying on me.â Itâs more a statement than a question.
Jace crosses his arms over his wide chest, and a few students make sounds like theyâre scared. What, like Jace is gonna hit me? He might be angry, but he would never hurt me. Not physically, at least.
âItâs hard to miss you and Asher cuddling up in your driveway.â He cocks his head as if to challenge me to tell him heâs seeing shit that isnât true.
I burst out laughing. Itâs not gonna make a difference what I say. Heâs made up his mind that Iâm sleeping with Asher. They all have.
Jace clenches his teeth, and I swear I can see the steam coming out of his ears from the way his face is a deep shade of red. Heâs mad.
And me? I turn and walk away.
This doesnât warrant an explanation. If Jace and the others want to think that, let them. Iâm not going to correct them today, or any day. He thinks he saw something and jumped to the conclusion Iâm fucking Asher.
âHey,â Hunter calls out.
Raising my hand in the air, I flip the three of them off and walk to my first class, ignoring everyone around me.
Ughâ¦lunch.
Itâs too bad Grady and I donât have the same lunch period. I wouldâve happily sat with him. Instead, Iâm once again staring at my three former best friends and the very disgruntled girlfriend of one.
God, Britney really seems to have it out for me. Iâve done nothing but show up here. I havenât attempted to take her man away and have no intentions of doing so either. But if sheâs gonna go all classic mean girl, Iâll have to make sure she doesnât mess with me.
I sit down with people Iâve seen in some of my classes. Today they donât move away, so thatâs a good start.
âHey, Iâm Mila.â I decide to play the new kid and attempt to make a few new friendsâhopefully non-asshole ones.
âIâm Sadie. We have World History together.â
I smile over at the girl opposite me, who has a genuine smile on her face. She has purple hair too. Looks wicked. âItâs nice to meet you, Sadie,â I say around a mouthful of fries.
âThis is Cadence.â She gestures to the red-haired girl beside her.
The color isnât natural, but itâs gorgeous. Iâve never attempted to dye my hair. Itâs such a light blonde, Iâm worried Iâll hate the color and wonât be able to get my natural hair back. A hairdresser told me once that I would need to be one hundred percent confident if I tried color it, as my hair will si=uck that colour it and I wont be able to go back.
âIs it true that youââ
I put my hand up quickly to stop the rest of Cadenceâs question. âIf itâs about sleeping with anyone, itâs not true.â
She nods and then looks over to the football table. âSorry, I just always wanted to know what Hunter looks like naked.â
I almost spit my food across the table. Both girls raise their brows at me as they started laughing.
âSorry, Cadence doesnât have a filter sometimes,â Sadie says around her giggles.
Shaking my head, I laugh with them. âNope, I get it. He is hotâ¦a hot asshole. But I get it. I have seen him naked, though.â
Cadence and Sadie swing their heads back to me and move in closer, wanting to know more.
âSeriously? Was he, like, big?â
I laugh again. âHe was eight, and I screamed. His mom came running in like someone had been murdered.â
âThatâs so weird that you knew them beforeâ¦like, before they were popular,â Cadence says.
I hadnât thought of it that way. Itâs not weird to me. But, looking back, maybe it was weird that I was the only girl in the group back then. I never had other girl friends to go out with or ask to stay over. It was only the guys.
Over the rest of lunch, we talk about New York, clothes, and the new season of The bell rings, and we all get up.
âSame time tomorrow?â Sadie asks.
âSounds great to me.â
