I followed Connor's lead through the dancing students and to the large table with food. My brows knitted together.
"So here is where you've been hiding so far? You didn't peg to me as someone who would wander around the food. More like the mysterious one in the corner. Maybe causing trouble with someone or- Oh my God!" I gasped as he took out a silver hip flask form his jacket and dipped the content on the punch. "What are you doing?" I hissed as he hushed me.
"Watch if some teacher is heading this way."
I glanced around, sure I wasn't being as subtle as required but with the drumming in my chest I could barely think. "You're spiking the punch?" he eyes me pointedly and I could almost read his mind 'Does it look like I'm doing something else?' "That- that's forbidden."
"Then made sure they aren't looking."
"Unbelievable..." I shook my head but did as he said, not feeling save until he save that silver ittem and filled a plastic glass with the punch content before handing it to me. "Are you kidding?"
He rolled his eyes but held it out 'til I gingerly took it. "Come." and moved to the furthest bench on the coner, where we had a perfect view from the gym but we weren't anywhere near the spotlight. "You never drink." he suddenly pointed out when I took the seat beside him, settling the cup in the spot beside us.
I glance up surprised, he wasn't someone to purposely pricked into something. Most of the time it look like nothing matter to him, actually, so him actually asking -well, kinda- something was shocking to say at least.
"Um, yeah..." I tucked a strand of hair behind my ears and turned to absently glance the dance floor. "My parents-" I started but a ball of emotion force me to clear my throat and began again. "My parents were mower out the road by a drunk driver, you know?" I confessed lowly. "It kinda freaks me out to think I might loose senses or be too slow and caused something I won't be able to control."
He nodded, understanding. "A sip won't kill anyone." he pointed out nonchalantly. "And you're not driving tonight."
"You are."
He gave me a plain look. "I'm not drinking."
"Then why spike the punch?" I asked boldly, curious indeed. If he didn't have any intention of taking it why wasting time and money -and my nerves- in it?
I swear I could see the corner of his lip twisting. "Because it's so much fun seeing others get drunk." he glanced around and his eyes sparled when he spotted something. "Look," I followed what he pointed with hsi chin. "Somerson."
Confused I followed his direction and saw James Somerson tipsily struggling to dance straight leaning on poor Tania Lopez. I tilted my head, slightly amused at his clumpsiness. "You think he's already drunk?"
"Since the moment he stepped in." he nodded. "He tried to kiss Mr Flou when giving the tickets."
"He didn't." I covered my giggled with one hand and turned to look back at Somerson, noticing then that his friend were as well not in their best. "Oh my God look at them."
"That wasn't my doing tho. A lot get off before even appearing." he shrugged
"Look." I gestured a couple serving themselves from the punch. "Poor things. Who do you think will noticed it first, him or her?"
"None." and I got to give him that when both drink as if nothing was wrong.
The little angel on my shoulder warned me this might not be the best idea but the demon said it wasn't that bad. The hip flask wasn't even that big and the puch was huge, so it really couldn't cause any damage. Just a bit tipsiness, right?
"Stop worrying." he scoffed as if reading my mind. "They would sober up in an hour or so. Chill."
He was right. This even would last two more hours minimun, so a little glass of spiked punch won't be that bad. Besides, they would probably had a lot worst once the official even was over and it was moves to Fran's house as a full party.
We joked a bit more about them and I give in in taking a sip of the glass. I regretted immediately and Connor scoffed a laugh as I choked and ringed at the awful taste. I honestly didn't mind having been kept from it 'til now. We talked -we mostly I did- and teased the DJ awful taste. I mean, they weren't horrible but they certainly weren't good. They were dancable, leave it at that.
Norah and Macy joined us in a bit, causing Connor to shut down the small advances we were having and sensing it Macy sent Norah that look again. The pink girl rolled her eyes and took it upon herself to drive the conversation from there, slowly spiking his interest again. Slightly, but the couple words he mumbled were enough to lighten Macy's mood.
There were sudden cheer and whistles and we turned to see people gathering around the entrance, clapping. "What's going on?" Macy stretched her neck to have a better look but for the frown pursing her brows she didn't made up anything.
"I believe it's the team." said Norah and my heart picked up. I turned to look at her.
"You think?"
"Mhm." she nodded at me and her gaze slid over my shoulde. A smirk tugged her mouth. "Oh, yeah, it's definitelly the team."
"Wh-"
"Hey, there." two arms snaked around my waist from behind and and I was pulled into a hard chest. Butterflies erupted in my stomach at the familiar scent and warmth and I was ready to melt when he pressed a quick kiss on the side of my skull. "Sorry for the delay. I hope we ain't missed anything."
"Nompth?" my tongue got tied with this rush at the sudden delightful contact.
"Smooth." Norah teased and I blushed as Macy rolled her eyes amusedly.
"She means 'no'."
"Thanks, M." chuckled Brett and it rumbled from his chest to my back and into my being. He spun me to face him and my heart fluttered at the sight of his beautiful smile. He smiled a lot lately, and after everything that happen yesterday I dared to think I had something to do with it, which only made me more happy and it became a loop. His eyes scanned me up and down, taking good note of my attire and I blushed at the spark of approval that shone there. "You're stunning."
I smiled down shyly, my face burning and my fingers fiddled with the lapel of his dark grey suit. "You too." I mumbled and it was true. The suit, while it wasn't the fanciest one, it fit him like a glove and made him even more droolworthy than he usually was. "What took you so long?"
I could sense his smirk. "So you did miss me." his hand cupped my jaw, using his thumb to gently tipped it upwards and I met his electric blue eyes. I blushed harder and his smile shifted to a sweeter one, his hand slid down my neck brushing my hair out my shoulder and creating goosebumps everywhere he grazed. "We got stucked in the restaurat. So stupid."
"I bet." I giggled nervously at how close he was and his eyes darted down to my lips and a smile pulled his mouth, but instead of leaning dow he kissed my forehead melting me some more.
"Yeah, so enthralling." the music changed again and this time it was a slow tone that filled the room. Brett eyes met mine, excitedly. "Come dance with me." it wasn't exactly a question but I didn't exactly mind. Then he seemed to remember something and turned giving a cautious look at Connor, eying him carefully but I could see how his jaw clenched. "If your date don't mind..."
Ignoring the bitterness in his tone, Connor seemed almost amused and gave him his favorite answer: a shrug. I frowned at Brett's rudeness but he didn't waste a second and pulled me into the dancefloor, only stopping when he find a proper spot in the crowded place.
"Date? I told you, we were coming just as friends."
"He take you here, he's your date. Meaning I don't like him." I narrowed my eyes and but he waved it off. "No... not like that. It's not I don't like him, I don't appreciate him taking you here."
"I asked him."
"Stop reminding me." he groaned and pulled me closer by the waist, bringing my chest to his and ripping all air from my lungs.
Brett smirked and I felt my face warming again, every inch of my body buzzing from his nearness. I lowered my gaze, embarassed. "I, uh, I d-don't know how to dance this."
"Me neither." he gently brought my arms up his shoulders and lower his back around my waist, bringing us even closer. "But it's a slow dance, you don't really have to do anything, just leant into me and sway."
My face flushed bright red but I did as he instructed, leaning closer and letting him guide the sways. "Wouldn't you like that?"
"Very much, yes." he teased back and I did as he said, my hands around his shoulders and followed his light sways.
His eyes so intense in that dim light I got my stomach in a curl. Unconsciously my gaze immediately shifted to his lips. A sudden rush filled my veins when I realized only inches where preventing us to be kissing. My lungs became heavy and a powerful warm tickled me from inside when he smirked and leaned almost grazing the side of my face.
"What are you thinking about?" he whispered, his minty breath making me shiver. If he only knew the effect he had on me...
"Mmh?" in my dizzy state I couldn't even manage to form a proper sentence, fuzzed by his nearness.
He laughed. He had such a sexy laugh. It was low and sent an immediate chill straight to me making a soft pressure drop from my chest to my lower stomach. A pleasant pressure. "I can tell you what I'm thinking about." his voice sounded huskier than usual, caressing me and making my toes curl.
"W-what are you thinking about?" my own voice sounded different and I could tell he noticed too by the way his lip curled along with my heart.
"You." he leaned closer and my breath hitched. I couldn't focus. No when he look at me like that. Like I was the most beautiful thing he'd ever get to see. "You've been in my mind the whole day."
I smiled shyly and without even thinking rested my forehead on his neck, leaning into his warm and feeling a funny sensation spreading through my chest. Almost immediately Brett's cheek was on the top of my head and he took a deep breath tightening his hold. His scent overwhelmed me, as always, and we moved with the music but lost in our own world. "I've been thinking about you too. About us."
"Us?" he repeated almost savouring the world. I could sense his smile even if I wasn't hiding in his neck. "And what had you been thinking of us?"
"That I like you." I rushed and his arms tightened around me in a lovely way, easing the nerves of anticipation and vulnerability in me. I hugged him closer, using it as a suport to get the strenght and came clean. "You know, I confronted Jade earlier." I whispered proudly but my small joy was shaken when he tensed.
"What? Did something happen?" he grabbed my shoulders and forced me to look at him, I immediately missed the warmth of his body. His blue orbs pinned me with concern. "Had she done anyhting to you again? I swear to God if she-"
"N-no- No!" I grabbed his hands and squeezed so he focused back on me. "Brett calm down, nothing's happened. See? I'm all good." I smiled and he seemed to relax a bit but his brows remained in a frown. I swallowed my insecurities and tugged his hands still on mine back around me and snuggled into him once more. "Don't get mad, it wasn't like that. I handled it."
I felt him breathe forcefully through his nose but then slowly hugged me back and resumed the gentle sways. "Are you okay, then?" he muttered into my hair.
I nodded, a smile pulling my lips. "I am. She wasn't exactly nice, b-but I took control. It felt so good."
"I'm sure." he kissed the top of my head and my heart warmed. "I'm surprised you finally stand up to her. I thought you were too nice to told someone to fuck off."
I gasped at his crudeness. "W-well maybe I didn't said that." he let out a short chuckle and the tension eased almost completely. "What I was meant to with this is that, I realized I was never clear with us... but neither were you. And that was probably what messed it all up."
He sighed. "I know..."
"I-" I pulled away to met his gaze, not believing I was about to say that and my face flushered bright red. "I liked you, Brett. Not now. Always have." I rushed, not stopping to overthink it or I knew I would regret it. I shut my eyes. "I liked you since forever and when Jace asked me out... I only accepted because I'd given up in you asking me. I-I was sure that summer you would, but you didn't so I gave up because it hurt so much and then-"
"Lys." hands cupped my face, starling me to a stop of my babbling and my lids lifted meeting his gaze again. So blue and intense... diving into mine. Seeking for something.
The most unreadable expression in him and my guts churned all the more. I felt so vulnerable right now. So exposed. Had I made I mistake?
"You-" his voice drifted away and he had to start again. "You've like me back then?"
"Y-yes."
"Always?"
I cupped his hands over mine and only then I relized they were shaking. My chest throbbed and I gulped. "Always have."
His eyes darted between mine for more excrusiating minutes, each beat of my heart more painful than the later. But then finally there was a twich on the corner of his mouth, and he released a breath in what looked like relief. His eyes shone and his lips parted but just then the music was abruptly cut earning a collective groan and shattering our intimate bubble in the most sharp way.
I blinked, turning with everyone towards the stage where the principal stood with a mike, saying something about counting votes and electing the Flower Queen-
"Hell no." Brett reacter faster than I and in a second was pulling my hand through the crowd and towards the back of the gym.
"Brett-"
"We're not leaving this conversation like this." he stated firmly reaching the end of the students and pushing me before him and carefully not to be seen we slid in the back door, hushedly pushing it open and slidding in the much colder air of outside. I stepped out first, brushing my arms and turning to see him carefully guiding the door close so it didn't make a sound.
"B-but Brett. They're about to chose the Queen. And we won't know-"
"I don't care." he crossed the distance with one stride and his head dipped for an intense kiss.
Startled I kissed back out of instinct as my body processed it all. It was as if something more powerful than myself wanted to respond the kiss. To pull him closer. To feel this things he did in my chest so easily...
"I-" but instead of ending this half started sentence he made a sound that shook my insides and sealed our lips again. I giggled but it was muffled and my fingers came up his neck towards his soft hair.
Just like yesterday, fire burned in my veins the moment his lips touched mine, but today it was more raw. More was pouring out of it.
His arms tightened around me pulling me closer at the same time he took another step pressing me to the wall and suddenly he was everywhere. His body covered mine, his hands slid deliciosuly down my arms and sides and his mouth... Oh his mouth.
He pulled away enough to breathe, each outake of air he did hitting my heated skin and eliciting all kind of chills. "I've always like you too, you know." he kissed my cheek and glided his mouth down my jaw and neck. My back arched tilting my head against the wall and giving him more access to do this magic "Always." He sucked on the sweet spot he's worked and my lids fell, the fireworks blowing everything else and I clinged on him harder.
"Brett-"
"Fuck." he released my skin and his pants on it only got my world spinning faster. "I was going to ask you out." He attracted my attention back to reality and I blinked, still tangled with him. Once I met his orbs again he smiled sadly and rested his forehead on mine, our noses brushed and our pants mixed. "That summer." he reminded me. "I wanted to ask you out. I- Fuck Lys, I was going to."
What? My stomach keep up his crazy dance I frowned. "Then- Then why didn't you?"
"I thought you would had said no."
What?! "That's stupid."
"So it was going out with Jace if you apparently liked me."
"You kissed Jade too!"
"Because you weren't talking to me!" he took in a sharp breath lowering his gaze but I saw the ashamed expression he got now. "Because I'd broken your arm." One of his hands slide up my arm and peel it from around his neck to kissed my iner wrist, making my skin burned. "That was my point of no return right?" he whispered lowly, his voice thick but I couldn't utter a word. "I was a jerk before but that was... I never meant for it to happen. You got to believe me. I'm so sorry for that and you were right to be mad at me. I was a dick."
"I know." I brought my arm back to its previous place and hugged him closer to me, loving how his frantic heartbeat drummed against my chest. "I-Its okay now. It was an accident. I know it now."
He sighed and leaned closer too, the tip of his nose traces my neck. I felt his smirk against the skin of my shoulder before kissing it. A million of carnivorous butterflyes devoured my stomach and the chill he sent down my spine with that made my toes curled. "I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I like you."
I grinned, a sweet ache taking over my chest and making me feel light and I squeezed him tighter. "I know that too."
He smirked and leaned back from my shoulder enough to raise and kissed my lips once. Twice. Thrice... It started innocent but shifted quicker into that feeling that roamed in my being.
It was confusing. New. Exciting. Scary...
"What happen... with taking things... slow?" I breathed throught kissed.
"I can't-" I shuddered as his hands slid alluringly to my neck to tangle in my hair and he stole another kiss. "Fuck, I can't stop kissing you." I giggled as he came down again because, in all fairness, neither could I.
We kissed slowly for a moment but then things began escalating again, so I breathlessly pulled away. "Brett-"
"Be my girlfriend."
