Chapter 18: CH 18

“Damn, that was too scary,” even though he was used to seeing the cruelty of the world, Yu Sang couldn’t help but be angry when he found out about yesterday, “That man is really not human.”

Wu Rui, who was always good-natured, spoke with anger, “That kind of person should be put in jail for the rest of his life!”

“That’s right,” another doctor picked up the conversation, “I heard that the police interrogated him overnight and locked him up as soon as they finished! The nurse on duty said that he was demanding only the baby should be saved when he was still at hospital without anyone asking for his opinion.”

Zhang Yun’s husband, suspected of poisoning, domestic violence, and lying about his wife’s condition, was detained in a detention center.

After Zhang Yun regained consciousness, the Public Security Bureau came to the hospital to investigate and collect evidence.

According to Zhang Yun’s confession, she and her husband had an argument, the suspect beat her and pushed her down the stairs. In a moment of panic, the suspect rushed his wife to the hospital, but was afraid of admitting his atrocities, which almost delayed Zhang Yun’s treatment.

After scolding scum, Wu Rui then lamented to Jiang Xu, “You and Fangyu are also too venomous-eyed and quick to react, if this were us, let alone calling the police, we probably wouldn’t have been able to spot that the patient was poisoned so quickly.”

He suddenly paused as he spoke, “By the way, I haven’t asked yet, I heard that you and Fangyu operated together last night?”

Jiang Xu lifted his eyes and cautiously took a sip of soup with his eyes and nose in the air.

“Mmm.”

His diet had now completely changed from cola and fried chicken to the nourishing crockpot soup from the hospital entrance, and although he usually throws it up after drinking it, he would still drink it tirelessly.

When did you two start having such an amazing relationship?” He said in amazement.

Jiang Xu’s hand holding the spoon gave a start, he knew that according to Xiao Ting’s character, the whole Jihua Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department would know that Shen Fangyu had lent him a hot water bag within one night.

A familiar voice suddenly came from behind him, and Shen Fangyu greeted Wu Rui with a smile, “Brother Wu.”

“Yo Fangyu, I was just talking to Jiang Xu about you.” He waved at Shen Fangyu enthusiastically.

Shen Fangyu smiled self-consciously, “Then you probably weren’t talking about me, you were scolding me.”

“How could that be?” Wu Rui, who had just seen the light to repairing the relationship between the two, was determined to dispel the misunderstanding between his two good juniors, and he warmly invited Shen Fangyu, “Come and sit with us.”

Jiang Xu and Shen Fangyu would try to be out of each other’s sight during meals, and at Wu Rui’s words, both Jiang Xu’s gaze and Shen Fangyu’s steps hesitated for a moment. But Wu Rui, as the champion of “everyone must get along together” and peacemaker, was clearly very motivated after being awarded the “Peace Prize”. Who beat you up?” He said and was about to roll up his sleeves, “Senior Brother will take revenge for you.”

The bruising and swelling on Shen Fangyu’s handsome and elegant face looked out of place and a little bit comical.

Fortunately, he still had a pair of amorous eyes, and he glanced at Jiang Xu meaningfully before telling Wu Rui, “Can you find anyone in our department who would dare to beat me up apart from your most eccentric junior brother Jiang?”

Wu Rui was immediately dumbfounded. Although Shen Fangyu looked so elegant, he was ruthless when beating people up, a typical sven scum.

*Sven scum- term usually used for men who look gentle and elegant on the outside but are actually malicious or villainous.

Except for Jiang Xu, who could draw with him, no one else was his opponent. Besides, he was so tall that ordinary people would have to stretch their arms to hit him, leave alone hitting his face, they’d probably be thrown over his shoulder before they could even touch them.

Jiang Xu stirred the white radish in the chicken soup with his spoon, “Serves you right.”

Wu Rui saw that the two were at odds again, so he asked Shen Fangyu, “Why are you angry with Xiao Xu again?”

“Why am I angry with him?” Shen Fangyu retorted, “You’re just defending Jiang Xu without reason.”

Wu Rui said, “That’s not because I see that you’re always angry with him.”

Shen Fangyu glanced at Jiang Xu, “You only see me angry at him, but you don’t see how he is angry at me. Your most beloved junior brother Jiang is the one who is so angry.”

“You’re still acting like children all day long, making a lot of noise.” Director Cui suddenly appeared in the doorway, interrupting their bickering.

The doctors greeted Director Cui, “Director.”

Director Cui smiled demurely and nodded, then turned to the two doctors who were fighting, “Jiang Xu and Shen Fangyu, if you are free in the next few days, come to my office together.” Her movements were consistently sharp, and she went straight out after she finished speaking.

The crowd showed their gossipy expressions, and the bold ones immediately teased, “Director Cui sounds like a class teacher catching a young couple.”

Jiang Xu and Shen Fangyu: “……”

Both of them inclined their heads at the same time, leaving each other with a non-confrontational back of the head.

“Director Zhao, why are you here?” Director Cui, who had just walked out, suddenly spoke up.

The doctors in the room raised their heads at the sound of the words and saw Director Zhao of the emergency department standing in the doorway with a young doctor who looked new to them.

Director Zhao exchanged a few pleasantries with Director Cui, nudged the young doctor beside him and explained, “I brought him here to see Dr Jiang.” Seeing this, Director Cui pointed inside the room and said, “Jiang Xu is inside, go now.” With that, she left at a fast pace.

Everyone listened to the trivial conversation outside the door and looked at each other in disbelief. They were still puzzled when the young doctor walked straight up to Jiang Xu, “I’m sorry Dr Jiang, I’m sorry for offending you so much yesterday.”

Jiang Xu recognized the doctor and put down his bowl of soup, “Aren’t you going to complain about me?”

The previous impulsive remarks were suddenly brought up, and Liu Ran’s face turned red, “I’m inexperienced, I just thought of what the books say…..” He saw everyone with smirks and his voice got lower and lower, “I was wrong Dr. Jiang.”

There were many people in the emergency room, and others heard early in the morning that the little doctor in the emergency department contradicted Jiang Xu and threatened to complain about him. So on hearing this, the doctors in the waiting room understood the ins and outs.

“Jiang Xu,” Director Zhao smoothed things over, “This kid was sneaking around the door of my office this morning. I asked him what he wanted and found out that there was such a thing last night. He wanted to apologize to you, but didn’t know how to start, so I brought him here to see you.” He said, “Xiaou Liu is young and inexperienced, he takes whatever the patient’s family says seriously, so don’t worry about it.”

“Just remember the experience,” Jiang Xu said as he glanced at Xiao Liu a look, “You don’t have to apologize to me.”

“It’s good that you dare to question a senior doctor,” Wu Rui looked over at Liu Ran, who wanted to bury his head in the ground, and said with a bit of teasing on the side, “but next time you question someone, you’d better not say ‘it’s what the book says’. ”

As soon as he finished, the group of doctors all laughed.

“Young man,” Wu Rui said in a gentle tone, “books can never cover all scenarios in the doctor’s profession, you can memorize as many books as you want but you have to learn to be flexible. Phosphorus pesticides are almost extinct in our city, moreover, our hospital is in the city center so cases of pesticide poisoning are rare, unlike township hospitals. In addition, the patient’s family deliberately hid it, so it’s normal for you to have misdiagnosed it if you have no experience.”

To comfort the young doctor’s wounded heart, he added a word about the junior brother’s past: “Don’t look at Dr Jiang’s quick response, but he insisted on running back and forth to the townships for two years to gain experience, and went to the charity clinics every week.”

“I see.” Liu Ran grabbed the hem of his clothes, and after a long time, he finally managed to say, “Thank you, Dr Jiang.”

If he hadn’t discovered in time that the cause of the patient’s illness was organophosphorus pesticide poisoning, he might have been penalized for “misdiagnosis”. In this era of rampant medical troubles, any mistake could kill a doctor’s career.

He said exaggeratedly but it made Liu Ran laugh, and the atmosphere became lighter.

Liu Ran finally gave Jiang Xu a firm bow, “I’ll go back and write up a proper record, and bring it to you and Director Zhao to go over when the time comes. I’ll strive to be a good doctor like you in the future.”

Jiang Xu wasn’t quite used to such overly enthusiastic praise and after a moment, said quietly, “Okay, I’ll read it and remember you.”

Liu Ran: “Huh?”

“Remember you and see if you achieve your goals.”

Liu Ran’s eyes instantly lit up as if he’d been injected with chicken blood, as if he could stay up for another three big nights, “I understand, I’ll definitely work hard, I’m going to apply for a charity clinic right away!” Immediately after saying that, he tightened his white coat with great vigor and walked out of the lounge.

After he left, Wu Rui sighed and lamented, “Young people really have boundless energy, why do I just want to take a vacation….”

“You’re not old either, Brother Wu.” Shen Fangyu finished comforting the self-pitying Wu Rui and went back to harassing Jiang Xu, “It’s my first time knowing that you can also pour chicken soup,” Dr. Shen, who hadn’t been treated this way, couldn’t help but add sourly, “I thought you only taunted people.”

“You’re not going to drink this?” Shen Fangyu commented, “You’re a good doctor who saves lives and heals the wounded, why are you trashing the lives of an old hen?”

Jiang Xu gave him a blank look and picked up his spoon again, glancing at the whitening chicken in the bowl with some annoyance. But the more he looked at it, the more nauseous he became, and he finally couldn’t help but frown at the sudden nausea.

Shen Fangyu, who was just sneering and being sarcastic, instantly came to his senses and with a bit of embarrassment, “Is your body …… still okay?”

“I’ll live longer than you anyway.” Jiang Xu said casually.

“No, I mean …..your reaction.”

Jiang Xu’s eye lashes trembled and he instantly understood what he meant.

What Shen Fangyu wanted to ask was the early pregnancy symptoms.

Shen Fangyu’s eyes fell on his chicken soup, he leaned forward and said in a low voice, “I just said that casually, if you don’t want to drink it, don’t drink it, the old hen won’t bother with you.”

Jiang Xu: “….”

“What else do you want to eat?” Shen Fangyu said, “I’ll go buy it for you.”

“No need.”

The atmosphere suddenly became a little awkward, and Jiang Xu pursed his lips. It felt weird, as if he and Shen Fangyu were a couple, and the young father-to-be was carefully caring for his newly pregnant wife while he was at work.

But they didn’t have anything to do with such a description.

Jiang Xu exhaled slowly, raised his head slightly and looked at the table in front of him motionlessly, his jaw taut in a sharp, well-defined curve.

After a long time, he dropped a sentence, “Don’t bother.” And under Shen Fangyu’s gaze, he simply poured the chicken soup and walked out of the lounge.

Shen Fangyu remained in the same place as he watched his slightly messy steps. His peach blossom eyes looked like they were dipped in ink, glowing, but there were no emotions in them.

After a while, when Jiang Xu’s shadow could no longer be seen, he shook his head helplessly, “Why are you so stubborn?”
