âPian.â
The hall was silent as Gen crossed his arms and sighed. âPian,â he repeated, rolling his eyes. âIf you donât answer me now, Iâll cut your budget.â
Then, out of the darkness, a petulant reply came. âYou canât!â
Gen smiled to himself. âThatâs more like it,â he said. âNow, let me into your room.â
Pianâs room was closed off, stopping Gen from coming inside right at the door. No one else ventured into the room after a maid had gone in once and ended up sick. It was only Gen who visited nowadays, and, even then, it wasnât because he wanted to.
âCome in,â Pian said, reluctantly letting Gen inside. He watched as the other man stepped into the room, careful as always. âWhat brings you here?â
Gen rubbed the crease in his forehead. âI need you to make it.â
Pian blinked. âMake what?â
âThe transformation potion,â Gen answered, looking around the roomâit was a messy, miserable place. There was no room more fitting for Pian, he thought.
Pianâs face broke out into a smile. âAh!â he said in glee, rubbing his hands together. âI see it was a success last time.â
The wizard brushed some bottles and a seemingly random assortment of items from his table with the back of his arm. He didnât seem phased at all as everything came crashing down to the floor.
âYou know,â he continued, smile only growing wider. âIâve actually improved on it since last time. The pain will be significantly less now.ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âThatâs not good,â Gen muttered under his breath.
Pian hummed. âPardon?â
All Gen did was shake his head. âNothing.â
Turning back to the work on his table, Pian continued. âSo do you have any preferences?â
âGray and narrow eyes,â Gen said. âA lower nose and a lighter voice.â
Pian stopped and looked up. âSir Gen?â
Gen looked at him expectantly. âWhat?â
âWhoâs drinking this?â Pain asked cautiously. âItâs the duke, right?â
âYes,â Gen answered, humorlessly.
There was no magic greater than that of the empress, Gen knew. He wouldnât have believed it to be true if he hadnât seen it personally. He knew that no matter how great the potion turned out to be, it would not be anything like something the empress would make. But he didnât care to explain this to Pian.
âJust make it, will you?â Gen said impatiently.
âWell, the dukeâs physique is quite amazing,â Pian told him, walking over to one of his shelves and picking out a small bottle. âUnless I carve his bones, it wonât really work.â
Gen shrugged. âI assumed as much.â
Holding the bottle out to Gen, Pian hesitated. âI have to tell you that it might have⦠a side effect.â
Gen took the bottle in his hands and studied it intently. âA side effect?â
âYes,â Pian said. âIt might lower a maleâs ability toââ he stopped himself, shaking his head. âIf you gave me more time, I could perfect the potion and remove the side effect.â
Genâs eyes shone as he stared down at the bottle. This was just the thing he needed to get revenge on that miserable man. He had always disregarded his work.
âNo,â he said, smiling at the wizard. âThis should do just fine.â
Pian frowned. âJust tell the duke he wonât be able to perform like he normally can.â
Gen nodded, turning to leave the room. âWill do.â

Gen gave Alexcent the potion bottle. âPian says that there wonât be pain like last time.â
Alexcent turned the bottle over in his hands and looked up at Gen. âReally?â
âYes,â Gen nodded, lips curling into a smile. He could have explained the other side effect that Pian had told him about, but he didnât. Alexcent didnât need to know.
âThatâs great,â the prince said. He didnât care much about the pain, but he knew that Amethyst had been worried about it last time and he would rather not have to deal with that again.
Saying his goodbyes to Gen, Alexcent stepped out of his office and into the hallway where Amethyst was already walking towards him.
âAsh!â Alexcent exclaimed as Amethyst drew near.
She grinned. âAlec,â she said. âI was looking for you.â
âI was looking for you too,â Alexcent confessed, his voice a little giddy.
âReally?â Amethyst asked.
The prince smiled. âOf course.â He would be lying if he said he didnât think they were soulmates.
Then, Amethystâs smile faded as her features grew serious. She frowned. âListen,â she said. âI have something to say.â
Before she could continue, Alexcent raised a hand to stop her. âLet me speak first,â he told her. âClose your eyes.â
Hesitantly, Amethyst did as she was told.
âYou might feel a little dizzy,â she heard Alexcent mumble as his arms wrapped around her. She breathed in his scent and pulled herself closer to him as she felt her body begin to float. A warm gust of wind washed over her, then she was back on the ground
âYou can open your eyes now,â Alexcent said, his voice gentle and quiet.
Slowly, Amethyst opened her eyes and found herself in front of a still river. She gasped. âAlec, is thisâ¦â she trailed off, unable to find the words.
Alexcent smiled. âIt is.â
Amethyst was stunned. In the blink of an eye, they had gone from the palace to the edge of the Empire. It wasnât exactly what she had expected.
âIs this really Hutchmoon?â she asked, just to be sure.
