When they arrived home, Albus happened to be coming downstairs, and they exchanged a brief greeting.
âYour mother said you still have classes in the afternoon, so Iâll head back first,â Albus said, feeling a bit. awkward.
Emmeline avoided his gaze and nodded mechanically Ms. Maggie, seeing Emmeline returnâwith tear-streaked cheeks, sensibly stopped chattering and left the room.
âMom, Iâm sorry.â Emmeline leaned against her motherâs knee.
âYou know, Emma, Albusâ parents have a long-standing friendship with your dad and me,â her mother said gently. âYou shouldnât do him bad like that.â
âHmm,â Emmeline obediently agreed.
âIf it werenât for them, I wouldnât have become a regular worker at Altney Steel, and I wouldnât have such good treatment now. We owe them a lot.â
âIâve never heard you and Dad talk about this before.â Emmeline looked at her motherâs face.
âYouâre just kids; what should we tell you about that?â her mother replied. âBesides, they all became high- ranking leaders at Altney Steel later on, and we gradually grew apart.â
Emmeline didnât seem interested in what her mother was saying, feeling a heavy, oppressive weight on her heart.
âBut Mom, I donât want anyone else,â Emmeline muttered with her eyes downcast. âI just want to be with Abel.â
âShut up!â Kimberly interrupted Emmeline and shifted her gaze toward Abel. âAbel, watch over Emma.
Just because sheâs not sensible doesnât mean you, her older brother should too!â
Abel understood what Kimberly meant. He nodded in silence.
Maxwell emerged from his study, his face grim. âAbel, Emma is still young. You should provide more guidance, and donât let her go astray.â
âThis is my own business,â Emmeline protested as she stood up. âWhy are you scolding Abel?!â
Abel remained silent.
After a moment, he suddenly stood up and, without any warning, knelt down in front of his uncle. âUncle Maxwell!â
Maxwellâs face had turned beyond grim. âSpeak your mind. No need to kneel before me!â
âI watched Emma grow up.â Abel looked up at him. âBut no matter who you choose for her, I wonât be at case.â
Maxwell was taken aback, but his tone remained harsh. âYou and Emmeline, itâs impossible!â
âUncle Maxwell!â
Maxwell slammed the table, his expression grave.
Abel bowed his head with a resounding thud. âUncle Maxwell, please let us date!â
âAbel!â Emmeline was frightened and quickly pulled his arm, but Abel remained motionless.
âAbel. Iâm sure you havenât forgotten how weâre all related, have you?â Maxwell was exasperated, breathing heavily.
âI know.â Abel nodded.
âSo how dare you still make such an absurd request?!â
âButâ¦â Abel raised his head. âMy father was adopted, and I have no blood relation to Emmeline.
Legally, we are allowed!â
âDo you also know that your father lost his mother before he was even a year old and was raised by drinking my motherâs milk? In our family records, heâs listed as my elder brother!â Maxwell was furious.
âBut, Uncle Maxwellâ¦â
âShut up!â Maxwellâs brows furrowed deeply. âI knew it would come to this someday!â
Abel, you donât know how much Maxwell and I care about you,â Kimberly said. âIf not for this layer of relationship, we wouldnât think about marrying Emma to anyone else but you. But itâs not possible; our hometown would never agree. Even in death, we wouldnât be able to rest in our ancestral grave!â
âAbel, I know that you care for Emma,â Maxwell said, âbut your relationships are just forbidden. Please be more careful in your interactions from now on. Donât meet so often anymore.â
Abel nodded heavily and quietly stood up.
âAbel!â Emmeline looked at him timidly.
âItâs okay, listen to your parents.â Abel raised his hand, wanting to touch Emmelineâs cheek, but then he withdrew it.
âAbelâ¦â
âIâll head back to the factory,â Abel said. âYou go to your class. I wonât neglect you.â
Emmeline said nothing.
âBe a good girl. Listen to your parents,â said Abel before leaving in silence.
She chased after him, but his car was already started and runningâ¦
