After Emmeline arrived at the guesthouse, Tony immediately called Abel.
Abel had just finished washing up and was getting ready to rest. When he heard that Emmeline was at Tonyâs place, he was genuinely startled.
Also, it finally hit him that when Emmeline mentioned she was at the bus stop, she was referring to the cityâs bus stop, not the one near the elementary school! Hell, he had spent a good while searching for her near that bus stop!
Abel hastily put on his sportswear, feeling extremely anxious, and rushed to RetroWave Advertisements.
Right then, his beloved girl was peacefully asleep in the bed beside him.
In Abelâs heart, there was an indescribable mixture of satisfaction and guilt.
âThank goodness nothing happened to you, or how can I continue to live?â Abel gently held Emmelineâs hand in his palm and stared at her, listening to her steady breathing.
âAbelâ¦â Emmeline called out softly as if in a dream.
Her petite body shifted slightly, and tears glistened at the corners of her eyes, rolling down.
Abel pressed her little hand against his lips, almost on the verge of tears himself.
âSilly girl, why didnât you call me? Didnât you know that I was also looking for you at the same time?
âDid you think I no longer cared about you? Were you angry and upset? You told Tony not to call me, saying you donât want to see me. Emma⦠Emma, youâve made me so heartbrokenâ¦â
Abel kept vigil by her bedside the entire night, watching over her.
Several times during the night, he wiped away the tears that had fallen in her sleep.
As morning broke, Abel tucked Emmeline in, gently kissed her cheek, and then went downstairs to the lobby.
Janie was dozing off on the bar counter. When she heard footsteps, she raised her head, still drowsy.
âIs Emmeline okay?â she asked.
âSheâs fine. Didnât wake up all night,â Abel replied.
âBut your dark circles are pretty serious.â
âItâs okay; I stayed up the whole night.â
âThat must have been tough.â
âKeeping vigil through the night isnât tough; whatâs tough is not being able to smoke when Iâm awake,â
Abel said with a wry smile.
âYouâre something else.â Janie laughed. âArenât you waiting for Emmeline to wake up before you leave?â
âI wonât wait. Itâs better if she doesnât know I was here,â Abel said, looking somewhat downcast.
âEmmeline mentioned yesterday that you two had some kind of disagreement,â Janie said. âBut it looks to me that you two are okay. You care about her so much and are so affectionate.â
Abel smiled, settled the accommodation bill, and turned to leave.
Out of habit, Emmeline opened her eyes at 6:30 a.m.
She wouldnât be able to do her morning exercises that day, so she thought of lying in bed for a while, reminiscing about her dream.
In last nightâs dream, she was trapped on a deep cliff, overwhelmed by fear and despair.
She shouted in the mountain abyss, âAbel! Abel, where are you?â
Then, she felt Abelâs warm and reassuring large hand gently holding hers. She sensed him embracing her, protecting her, telling her not to be afraid, that he was thereâ¦
However, the morning sun was already shining brightly, and a new day had begun.
Abel, where are you? Do you know how these past two days have been for me? Donât you know how much I miss you?
Emmeline took out her phone, intending to call Abel. She looked at the screen with Abelâs name displayed, but in the end, she didnât press the dial button.
Abel left the guesthouse and called Benjamin.
âAbel, Benjamin asked, âis Emmeline okay after last night?â
âSheâs fine. You and Tony went out of your way for her!
âDonât mention it. Itâs no trouble at all.â
âBenjamin, donât tell Emma I came over last night.â
âWhy?â
âJust donât tell her, please.â
âI understand, Abel. Is there anything else I can help with?â
âPlease help me take Emma home. Iâm not in a position to do it myself.â
âBut Emmeline is staying today to help Tony with a business plan,â Benjamin revealed.
âThatâs fine, then. Thank you for taking care of her.â
âDonât worry about it,â said Benjamin, and they ended the call.
On the other side, Janie changed out of her uniform and wore a floral dress.
âThis is the end of my night shift. Iâm going back to my dorm now, so I wonât be staying with you,â she told Emmeline.
âThank you for last night and for your uniform,â Emmeline said with a smile.
âWhenever you have time, come visit me,â Janie said with a smile.
