âHow dare you hit me!â Janie shrieked in outrage, clasping a hand to her stinging cheek. âIâm going to have Mr. Faughn fire you right now!â
âYou can try, missyâ¦â Emmeline retorted, smiling grimly.
âOh, Iâm certainly going to try. Do you think Iâm afraid of you?â Janie turned, about to flounce off in search of Simon. Abruptly, she froze in her tracks as a voice came from outside the costume tent.
âWhoâs spewing all that arrogant crap?â
Emmeline turned as Adrien came in, smartly dressed in an impeccably tailored business suit and polished leather shoes.
Janie recognized Adrien immediately. There were very few people indeed who would not recognize the suave, flirtatious playboy; he was part of the wealthy Ryker family after all, and a very eligible catch.
âMr. Adrien Ryker?â Janie had never expected to encounter Adrien here, of all places. Putting on her most charming smile, she hurried over to welcome him. âWhat a pleasure! Why are you here, though?â
âWhy canât I show up if I like?â Adrien shot back, eyeing Janie coldly. âI seem to recall someone was spouting some really outrageous nonsense just now too.â
âExactly!â Janie whirled around and pointed straight at Emmeline. âThis insignificant stunt girl here had the nerve to challenge me! She doesnât know her place!â
âIâm talking about you, woman!â Adrien strode over to Emmeline and slipped his arm protectively around her shoulders, glaring at Janie. âWho the hell do you think you are, taking that tone with our Emma?â
âMr. Rykerâ¦â Janie was startled. âWhat do you mean, our Emma?â
âEmmaâs part of our family. But I distinctly seem to remember hearing someone having the gall to say that theyâre going to get her fired!â
âButâ¦but Mr. Ryker,â Janie stammered, her brow creasing in eonfusion. âWhy would a member of your family be reduced to working as a stunt double here to earn money?â
âBecause sheâs bored!â Adrien lifted his chin slightly and stared down at Janie with contempt. âSheâs bored out of her skull and needs something to occupy her time!â
Bored? Janie did not quite believe this. Who in the world would be so bored that theyâd come to work as a stunt double?
âEmmaâ¦â Adrien turned to Emmeline. âIgnore this ignorant floozy; sheâs just jealous, thatâs all. I have a present for you; see if you like it?â
Emmeline blinked, completely taken aback. Adrien had a present for her? What scheme was he hatching now?
âI know Iâve neglected you and the kids,â Adrien continued with utmo sincerity. âI swear to God Iâll turn over a new leaf from today on and work really hard. I wonât go back to my playboy ways, I promise.â
Emmeline was so startled that she stared at Adrien fixedly, weighing him up from head to toe.
Her scrutiny made Adrien extremely uncomfortable. He hemmed and hawed for a little, then pleaded, âWhatâs wrong, Emma? Youâve got to believe me.â
Janie stood there in utter shock, listening to the entire exchange.
What? Adrien and Emmeline already had children? Did this mean that they wereâ¦a couple?
In that case, she had absolutely nothing to worry about! Since Emmeline was Adrienâs wife, of course she wouldnât get together with Benjamin! Not only that, it looked like Emmeline and Benjamin got along quite well. Perhapsâ¦
Perhaps she might even consent to help Janie get closer to Benjamin if Janie could play her cards right!
At the thought of this, Janie plastered on her biggest smile and took hold of Emmelineâs arm. âMy goodness, look at how attentive Mr. Ryker is, Emma! Youâre such a lucky girl! You even have a family together, my goodness!â
Emmeline stared at her, speechless. Who the hell asked you to butt in, bitch?
However, she did not wish to cause a scene with Adrien in front of Janie, so she merely nodded.
âAlright, Adrien. I know youâll do your best!â
Adrien brought out the velvet jewelry case and carefully opened it, revealing the dazzling diamond necklace. âLet me put it on for you, Emma.â
Emmeline swallowed her instinctive revulsion and nodded instead.
Adrien grinned in delight and clasped the glittering diamonds around Emmelineâs elegant, slender neck, then stepped back to admire the effect. âJust look at our Emma! Doesnât she look gorgeous?â
âOh, yes, absolutely!â Janie chimed in sycophantically. âShe looks gorgeous!â
âAlright, alright, thatâs enough.â Emmeline felt uncomfortable and slightly impatient with all the attention.
âAdrien, itâs almost time for me to get to work. Iâve got a busy day ahead.â.
âOkay, Emma.â Adrien took her hand and clasped it for a moment. âGo off to your work then. Iâll come and pick you up for dinner when youâre done.â
Before Emmeline could even reply, Janie piped up, clapping her hands in delight, âOh, you absolutely must go, Ãmma!â
âSure, whatever,â Emmeline agreed. She just wanted to get Adrien out of there as soon as possible.
