âBenjamin, youâre drunk.â Emmeline frowned, âLet go of me. I will grab you some water.â
âNo.â Benjamin hugged Emmeline tightly, âLet me hold you like this. Do you know how much I wanted to hug you? Iâve always lacked the courage to do so. Emmaâ¦â
Benjaminâs sobbing voice and words surprised Emmeline.
Emmeline knew Benjamin liked her.
Supposedly, it was a mild and warm sibling affection.
Emmeline never expected Benjaminâs affection had gone from simple liking to deep, repressed love.
âEmma, I regretted it so much.â Benjamin wailed as he hugged Emmeline, âWhen we were on ReykjavÃk Island beside Master Adelmar, I fell in love with you. Why didnât I have the courage to pursue you?â
âI always thought we would live together every day, and our relationship would never change. However, things have changed since we are at Struyria. Emma, I wish we could go back to the days when we were at ReykjavÃk Islandâ¦â
âThatâs not going to happen.â Tears streamed down Emmelineâs face, âSince Hesperus got sick, things are already set-in-stone. I have to find that personâ¦â
If Hesperus werenât diagnosed with a blood disease, Emmeline would not have brought the children back to Struyria.
Emmeline wished to stay forever in that blissful land with Master Adelmar, Waylon, and Benjamin. It would be a simple and fulfilling life.
Fate played tricks on them. Things would not return to what they used to be no matter what was said.
âEmma.â Benjamin held Emmelineâs face, âYou donât like Adrien, but why are you marrying him?â
Emmeline lowered her eyes and whispered, âAdrien is the childrenâs father. I donât want to deprive the children of the right to be with their father.â
âI can be a good father too.â Benjamin cried, âWho do you trust more than me?â
âHoweverâ¦â Emmeline shook her head, âThis is different.â
âEmma.â Benjaminâs tears fell to the floor, âEven if you marry Abel, I wonât be so heartbroken. I know you love him, but why did you pick Adrien? It makes me feel like Iâm such a failure!â
âDonât say that.â Emmeline raised her hand to cover Benjaminâs lips, âYouâre good enough for me, and youâre much better than Adrien. You did not lose to Adrien. You donât have a blood relation to the children. Thatâs all.â
Benjamin put away Emmelineâs hand. He lowered his head to kiss Emmelineâs lips.
It was a brief contact before Emmeline pushed Benjamin away.
âPlease sober up, Benjamin.â Emmeline shook her head, âI have always treated you like a family, as an elder brother.â
Benjamin took a step back. He leaned on the desk, covering his head in pain.
After a while, Benjamin said hoarsely, âSorry, Emma. I couldnât control myself. Please donât be mad at me.â
âLetâs go to Nightfall Cafe.â Emmeline added, âI will get you a hangover remedy. You will fetch me to be engaged with Adrien tomorrow morning!â
ââ¦â Benjamin looked at Emmeline with watery eyes.
âHave you made up your mind already?â
âItâs not a big deal.â
Benjamin nodded bitterly, âAlright, Ms. Louise.â
âLetâs go.â Emmeline reached out her hand to Benjamin, wanting to help him out.
âEmma.â Benjamin blurted, âDonât you want to let Master Adelmar know? This is an important event in your life.â
âDonât tell our master yet.â
Emmeline replied, âIâm not confident if Adrien will ultimately be worthy of my trust.â
âAlright. Letâs see how Adrien performs.â Benjamin pushed away Emmelineâs hands, âYou donât have to help me. Iâm fine.â
âYouâre not walking straight.â Emmeline insisted on holding onto Benjaminâs arm.
Emmeline and Benjamin left through the CEOâs office door. They entered the private elevator under everyoneâs surprised stare.
