âAbel,â Adrien explained urgently, âyouâve got it all wrong. I donât mean anything else, I just think itâs a huge mistake for you to stop loving Emmeline. I want you to face her again.â
âThatâs my business!â Abel retorted angrily. âWhen love is gone, itâs gone. Thereâs nothing to face again!â
Emmeline felt her heart sink as if she had been punched in the gut. Tears welled up in her eyes.
Abel took her hand and said, âEmmett, letâs go!â
Before Emmeline could react, Abel had half-carried, half-dragged her out of the private room.
Adrien watched helplessly as the two of them walked away, pounding his fist in frustration.
Luca gave Adrien a sympathetic and grateful glance before hurrying after Abel.
âMr. Adrien,â Lizbeth wiped away her tears, âdid I do a bad job acting? I was really into it, even moved.â
âNo, itâs not you,â Adrien said. âItâs Abel. Heâs too damn heartless! When he saw you, he had the nerve to say that when love is gone, itâs gone. That guy is a devil from hell!â
âDid Mr. Abel fall in love with that Emmett person?â Lizbeth asked.
âYes and no,â Adrien replied.
âWhat do you mean âyes and noâ?â Lizbeth pouted. âDonât beat around the bush with me.â
âYou know Emmett is actually Emma,â Adrien said. âBut her identity as Emmett adds a complicated layer of emotions for Abel. Once she becomes Emmeline, itâs like the person you just portrayed.â
âSo, that means,â Lizbeth sniffled, âMr. Abel might really not love Emmeline anymore.â
âBut his subconscious still accepts her,â Adrien said. âOtherwise, he wouldnât have reacted to Emmett that way.â
âWhat should we do then?â Lizbeth stomped her foot in frustration. âIs Emmeline going to pretend to be Emmett forever?â
âI donât know what to do,â Adrien said. âWeâll just have to see how things play out.â
As they exited the Majestic Bar, a driver pulled up in a car.
Abel was about to help Emmeline into the car when he saw her tears.
âEmmett? Whatâs wrong?â he asked.
âI donât know,â Emmeline sniffled. âI just suddenly feel really upset.â
âWhy would you be upset?â Abel gently wiped away her tears.
Emmeline flinched away, afraid that he would smudge her makeup. âI donât know, maybe I just didnât expect Mr. Ryker to be so heartless.â
âWho said Iâm heartless?â Abelâs face darkened. âDonât I treat you well?â
âMaybe youâre good to me today, but who knows about tomorrow?â Emmeline said, her voice trembling.
âJust like how you treat Emmeline.â
Abel furrowed his brow. âYou too? Can we please not talk about this? Itâs getting annoying.â
âI wonât bother you then,â Emmeline wiped away her tears with her hand, âIâll go somewhere else to clear my mind. Mr. Ryker can head back to the company on your own.â
âWhat about our internship agreement?â Abelâs voice held a hint of annoyance, âYouâre giving up after just half a day?â
âItâs not that,â Emmeline said, âIâm just not in the right headspace. Iâll come back and continue the internship with you.â
âHow about I join you to clear your mind and then we can have lunch together?â Abel suggested.
âNo need,â Emmeline refused, âI want to be alone.â
Abel fell into a cold silence for a moment, before rubbing Emmelineâs head gently. âSo where do you want to go? I can take you there.â
Emmeline suggested, âHow about you have the driver take me to Nightfall Cafe? Itâs Mr. Rykerâs place, and I can have a coffee there. That way, Mr. Ryker wonât have to worry.â
âAlright then,â Abel nodded. âIâll have Luca take you to Nightfall Cafe, you can have some coffee there.
For lunch, Sam will cook for you, and Iâll come to pick you up after work.â
âOkay,â Emmeline nodded meekly. âThank you, Mr. Ryker.â
âGood boy,â Abel ruffled her hair, then turned to Luca and instructed him to take Emmeline to Nightfall Cafe.
âYes, Mr. Abel,â Luca called for the driver to step out of the car.
As they settled into the Rolls-Royce, Luca spoke up in a hushed tone, âMs. Louise, donât be too upset.â
Emmeline was startled. âLuca, what do you mean?â
