Benjamin slipped Worryfree into his pocket while Sam continued laughing and made his way downstairs.
When he returned to Adelmar, Benjamin explained the situation to Janie but didnât mention that he had retrieved Worryfree himself.
âWell, that makes things easier,â Janie said. âWeâll just act like we donât know anything and put on a good show to stir things up.â
âRight,â Benjamin said. âJust make sure you play along with me, or else the act wonât be convincing.â
âDonât worry,â Janie said with a grin. âIâll make sure itâs seamless.â
The two of them then made their way back to the CEOâs office.
Abel and Emmeline were sipping coffee in the lounge. Emmeline sat in a plush armchair, flipping through some reports with a serious look on her face.
âYou donât understand any of this, do you?â Abel leaned in and asked. âDo you want me to explain it to you?â
âWho says I have to understand?â Emmeline glanced at him. âCanât I just look at it for fun?â
âSure,â Abel said. âIf you enjoy looking at things, I can take you to the Ryker Group and show you around any department you want to see.â
âIâm not interested in the Ryker Group,â Emmeline continued to peruse the reports. âThe Ryker Group isnât mine.â
âHow is it not yours?â Abel asked. âYouâre a Ryker family heiress, after all.â
âI canât accept that title,â Emmeline replied, not even lifting her eyelids. âWeâre not married yet, so how can I be a Ryker family heiress?â
âOur wedding is coming up soon,â Abel pointed out. âOnce weâre married, youâll be a legitimate Ryker family heiress.â
âIâve already told you, I donât care about that,â Emmeline pouted, looking disdainful. âI donât love you, so why would I marry you?â
âEmma, youâll fall in love with me eventually. I have faith in us,â Abel said, his eyes filled with tenderness.
âIâd sooner fall in love with a pig than with you,â Emmeline sneered. âWho gave you such an inflated ego to think that Iâll definitely fall in love with you?â
Abel felt a sense of deja vu. He realized that he had said those exact same words not long ago.
âEmma,â Abel furrowed his brow and said, âI know youâre mad at me, but itâs not really my fault. If you want to blame someone, blame Waylon.â
âWhy would I blame Waylon? He loves me and treats me like a precious gem.â
âDonât I treat you like a precious gem too?â Abel walked up to Emmeline. âYou should try accepting me and let me love you the way you deserve to be loved.â
âEmma doesnât need that.â
Benjamin entered the room. He walked over to the armchair and wrapped his arms around Emmeline.
âEmma has me,â he said softly, his face close to hers. âIsnât that right, Emma?â
Emmeline was taken aback by his sudden enthusiasm. This guy had no boundaries!
Just as she was about to push him away, Benjamin held her tightly and offered, âWhat do you want to eat for lunch? Why donât you come back to my villa and let me cook for you myself?â
Emmeline remained silent.
What was wrong with Benjamin?
Abel thought the same.
Is Benjamin trying to steal my girl?
Janie frowned and asked, âBenjamin, what are you doing with Emmeline?â
Benjamin continued to hold Emmeline and sneered at Janie, âWhat I and Emma are doing is none of your business, is it?â
âHow can it be none of my business? Weâre in a relationship, arenât we?â Janie retorted.
Emmeline struggled out of Benjaminâs embrace and said, âYeah, Benjamin, Janie has a right to know.
She likes you.â
âItâs her business if she likes me,â Benjamin replied, âI like you, and now that you donât love Abel anymore, doesnât it make sense for us to be together? Weâve known each other since childhood.â
âBut Iâ¦â
Emmeline didnât want to be with Benjamin, not when it would hurt Janie.
And she still loved Abel, really.
But she couldnât explain that now without ruining everything.
âDonât worry, Emma,â Benjamin said, smiling slyly, âthis is just between us. It doesnât concern anyone else.â
âBenjamin,â Abel growled, âthis isnât right. How can I still call you my friend?â
