Aurora
I shifted back into my human form and approached the gray-eyed woman.
âYouâre really Eleanora Winchester? ~The~ Eleanora Winchester who raised my mother?â I couldnât help the excitement in my voice. She was the one person who might have the answers I needed.
She smiled. âYes, my dear. I am. And Iâve heard that youâve awakened your powers, though they still seem weak. Thatâs why Iâm hereâto train you and help you become the future queen of lycans.â
Eleanoraâs voice was melodious and almost mesmerizing in its sincerity. It was the kind of voice that held you captive under its sway.
âHow can I be sure that youâre not some impostor? A witch the hunters sent after me?â I asked, uncertainty taking over.
âYou have every right to be wary of me, but please believe that Iâm here for your sake and your sake alone.â She seemed genuine, earnest even, but could I trust her?
~âYes. She isnât a threat to either of us,â~ Rhea said, and we both relaxed a bit.
âCan you really teach me how to control my powers?â I asked.
âOf course, my child. The enemy is still at large, and you need to know how to properly defend yourself.â
âWhat do you mean? The hunters? I scared them off last night. They wonât be coming back,â I assured her.
âDonât be too sure about that, Aurora. You were lucky last night, but that hunter is nowhere near beaten. Heâs determined to exterminate your kind for good.â
âMy kind?â I echoed.
âRoyals.â
I reeled slightly at her pronouncement. This was what weâd suspected, but hearing it confirmedâ¦
âHow are you so certain?â I asked her.
âIâm a witch, Aurora. And gossip travels quickly among my kind.â She winked at me, then rolled up her sleeves. âSo, have you mastered any elements so far?â
âElements?â I had to ask. What did she mean by that?
âAs a royal, you have the power to control the elements. Earth, wind, fire, and water. Once youâve mastered all four, youâll be the most powerful wolf in all creation,â she explained.
~âThat explains the purple flames and what you did to Tallulah,â~ Rhea chimed in.
âDoes this mean Iâll be able to walk on water and stuff like that?â I asked Eleanora, excited at the prospect of being able to do awesome stuff.
She laughed. âWell, Iâm not sure about walking ~on~ water, but youâll be able to bend it to your will.â
âThis is so exciting! When do we start?â I asked as I jumped to my feet, ready to begin my training.
âWell, before the physical training can begin, thereâs an even more important thing you must do.â
âAnd what is that?â I asked.
âYou must train your heart.â
âMy heart?â I asked, uncertain if I had heard correctly.
âYes, my child. Both your heart and your wolfâs,â she said, rising. âHave your powers only surfaced when youâre deeply distressed, sad, or angry?â
I nodded, remembering the first time Iâd caused those flames to appear. Wolfgang had left a bouquet of roses on my doorstep, and Iâd accidentally set them on fire.
âYour powers are triggered by your emotions. So, to master your abilities, you must have control of your heart,â she said, those gray eyes looking straight into mine.
âOkay. Iâll work at keeping my emotions in check,â I said, and she smiled.
âVery good. And judging by the size and shape of that mark, I assume you have an alpha mate, yes?â
She laughed as I instinctively covered Wolfgangâs mark with my hand.
âThis mark means nothing,â I said, looking down at the ground. It really didnât. Wolfgang didnât love me. He didnât want me as his mate.
âWhatâs wrong, my child?â Eleanora asked.
âItâs a long story. Letâs just say we werenât meant to be mated.â
âI wouldnât be so sure of that. The Moon Goddess fates each soulmate for a reason, and you two are no exception.â
She caressed my cheek tenderly, in a motherly way that reminded me of Montana. âI know that the two of you have encountered differencesââ
âHow could you possibly know that?â I asked.
Avoiding my question, she said, âIâm sure you both will get through this. You are the future queen of the lycans, and he is the strongest alpha. Youâre destined to rule together.â
âBut how can I trust him? Heâs hurt me so much already, and Iâm afraid that if I give him that power once more, heâll destroy me.â
She lifted my chin, forcing me to look her in the eye. âGive it time, and have faith,â she said with a tender smile.
Then Eleanoraâs expression turned menacing, and I heard thunder rumbling in the distance. âNow, speaking of that alpha, where is he? I need to have a word with him about the way heâs been treating my girl.â
I guided her through the woods and back to the leaderâs house, where we found ourselves surrounded by warrior wolves growling at us, ready to pounce.
âAurora! Are you alright?â Wolfgang rushed ahead of the warriors, sweat covering his brow, huffing as if heâd been running.
âOf course,â I said, somewhat taken aback. âWhatâs the meaning of all this? Tell your warriors to stand down.â
âYou were missing for hours and a seeker caught the scent of a witch.â His eyes drifted toward Eleanora, and he moved to stand between us, as if blocking me from a potential attack. âWho is this woman?â
âThereâs no need to be so defensive, Wolfgang. She means no harm to us,â I said.
âWhat do you mean, thereâs no need to be defensive? Sheâs a witch! We were attacked last night by witches, and now one shows up here? Of course, Iâm gonna be defensive, especially if my mate is in danger!â
âIâm not in danger, you big idiot! You and your warriors need to stand down now!â I said, trying to nudge him aside. He was as immovable as a boulder.
âNow, pups,â Eleanora said, âthis is no way to treat one of your elders. Please, show some respect.â
At the sound of her voice, every warrior presentâincluding Wolfgangâdropped to their knees in submission. I looked around, stunned at the sight.
âHow did youâ¦?â I asked.
âA little something I picked up while raising your mom.â With a wave of her hand, all the wolves lifted their heads. âShe was a very rebellious pup.â
Wolfgang was ready to pounce at her, but I pushed him back.
âShe means no threat to us!â I told him. âSheâs Eleanoraâ~the~ Eleanora weâve been looking for. Sheâs come to help me control my powers.â
âThe witch who raised your mother?â he asked.
I nodded. Eleanora stepped forward, eyeing Wolfgang.
âI would say itâs a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Alpha, but Iâve heard youâve been a bully to my Aurora,â she said, crossing her arms over her chest.
âIâ¦uhâ¦Iâ¦Iâ¦â Wolfgang stuttered.
I put a hand on his arm to silence him. It wouldnât do for him to seem so weak before a witch, especially with so many witnesses.
âEleanora, now isnât the time or place for that,â I said sternly.
âIâm just kidding, dear. Canât an old lady joke?â she asked, patting his cheek and walking toward the mansion. âCome on, kiddos. I donât have all day. Thereâs a lot to talk about!â
