Chapter 27

Sensing the tension in the air, Joanna immediately jumped in, Winston, why do you always argue with Mills when you see her?â
Winston looked away. His face was clouded with anger.
Joanna forced herself to smile and added, âYou two were lovers once. Even if you no longer have feelings for her, Mills is still a woman⦠Canât you just leave her be?â
Millie became irritated hearing Joannaâs words. While Joanna seemed to be advising Winston to ease the tension, she was actually mocking Millie. Millie knew exactly if Winston still had feelings for her, and she didnât appreciate Joanna being a busybody.
Joanna approached Millie with a friendly tone of voice. âWhat a coincidence to run into you here, Mills! How about a friendly game. of golf? The loser must do a dare. What do you say?â
Millie smirked as she realized that Joanna was once again playing the role of mediator.
Joanna, who knew Millie was good at almost everything but golf, blinked and feigned ignorance. âMills, do you have any doubts? Canât you play golf?â
âSurely you know I canât play golf,â Millie replied.
Her unexpected toughness caught Joanna off guard. Joanna pursed her lips and instinctively put her arm around Winstonâs.
Millie couldnât get rid of the bitterness and jealousy she felt toward Joanna. No matter if Joanna was causing trouble or if she was being mistreated, Winston would always have her back as long as she leaned on him.
âIs she supposed to know if you can play golf?â Winston questioned firmly.
A whirlwind of emotions swirled inside Millie as she glanced at Winston. He had always been on Joannaâs side, Mille loved him but she didnât deserve to be treated that way.
âMills isnât much of a golfer. Ms. Lowell, how about 1 join you for a round of golf?â Simon chimed in, shielding, Millie behind his back.
Suddenly, Millie felt a sense of security flood through. Sheâd never felt anything like it before, Overwhelmed with gratitude, she gazed at his back before lowering, her head.
Winstonâs eyes burned fiercely as he glared at Simon.
Joanna looked at Simon, then turned to Millie with a smile and said, âIâd still like to play with Mills, though.â She was confident that Winston would support her no matter what she did. If she wanted to be arrogant and bossy, she could.
âMs. Lowell, donât you think youâre going too far?â Simon smiled thinly.
âShe came here to enjoy herself, right? So how is it going too far when weâre all just here to have a good time?â Joanna shot him a smug, challenging look,
Millie stared at her in silence, She was at a loss for words. She couldnât believe how distant they had become. They used to be inseparable skipping school together, dressing alike, and even buying matching jewelry. They once shared a bond that seemed unbreakable, but nowâ¦.
âHow about serving me drinks if you donât want to play, Mills?â Joanna raised an eyebrow. A hint of resentment flickered in her eyes,
Millieâs expression turned icy in response.
âMs. Lowell, do you realize that sheâs Millie? How dare you ask her to serve you?â Simonâs eyes hardened.
âMill, did you come here just to fort with guys? Youâre not willing to join me or serve me,â Joanna snapped, her words growing
harsher.
Frustrated with the conversation, Millie responded coldly, âFine, Iâll joinâ She was strongâwilled and unafraid to take risks. Otherwise, she wouldnât have married Winston in the first place,
Winston furrowed his brows. He was surprised that Millie agreed.
Joanna narrowed her eyes and scoffed at what she perceived as Millieâs foolishness. Millie had barely touched a golf club, yet she dared to challenge Joanna, who was a seasoned player.
All right, then! Letâs make it big while weâre at it! How about the loser has to kiss the first guy she sees after leaving here?â Joanna suggested.
