Chapter 316
Millie frowned. Could Lainey be considering evaluating her performance to see if she was fit for a promotion to deputy chief?
*Dr. Quinn, itâs a little too fast, donât you think?â Millie asked the question she had been thinking about.
Lainey paused briefly, unsure what Millie meant.
âThe deputy chief position,â Millie joked.
Lainey glared at her and retorted, âDream on! With your qualifications, youâre nowhere near that position.â
Millie immediately burst into laughter.
Right then, someone opened the clinic door. Millie was about to ask for the files when she heard a
familiar voice.
âDr. Quino, Iâm here for a followâup.â
Millie looked up and saw it was none other than Selma.
âGrandma?â Millie exclaimed in surprise.
Selma was equally astonished. âMills, youâre here!â
Millie nodded and asked, âAre you not feeling well?â
âIâm here for a followâup,â answered Selma.
âBy yourself?â
âTheyâre busy, so I came alone,â Selma replied with a smile.
Millie helped her into a chair, sighing as she remarked, âThey should be more considerate. How could they let you come alone for your checkâup? Itâll be a hassle managing all these tests by yourself.â
In an instant, Selma looked up at her. âWill you accompany me then?â
âGrandma, Iâm at work,â Millie responded with a resigned tone.
Selma immediately turned to Lainey. While the latter was arranging the tests, she suddenly felt an intense gaze on her.
Not wanting to bother Lainey or complicate things, Millie said, âGrandma, Iâm really working at the
moment.â
âMills, youâve turned me down again!â Selma huffed, clearly upset.
She had previously invited Millie to join her for a tea party, but Millie declined. This time, when Selma asked her to accompany her for a checkâup, Millie turned her down again.
Millie was rendered speechless. However, Lainey cleared her throat lightly and said, âGo on, keep her company. It really is a hassle for her to go through everything alone.â
âThank you, Dr. Quinn! Selma said gratefully, her face lighting up with a smile.
And so, Millie had no choice but to comply.

After Lainey called Vanessa down, Millie accompanied Selma for her checkâup.
Selma was in her 70s. Yet, aside from her heart condition, she was in perfect health. She always exuded an air of elegance, as if every dress she wore had been specially tailored for her.
Unlike Layla, who was always stern and authoritative, Selma radiated warmth and friendliness. Her presence was genuinely kind and downâtoâearth.
âTake a seat, Grandma. Iâll go take care of the payment,â Millie said while supporting Selma.
Selma watched as Millie busily attended to everything. She couldnât help but admire her. It was a shame that Winston had been so foolish to lose such a great wife.
âMills, would you come home with me for lunch while we wait for the results?â Selma asked, linking her arm with Millieâs. âIâll cook for you.â
âGrandma, Iâll have lunch in the cafeteria. You should head home after your checkâup. Iâll collect the results and will let you know if thereâs anything worth noting. If everythingâs fine, you donât need to come over. Thereâs no need to trouble yourself.â
While they talked, Millie was going to accompany Selma to get her blood drawn.
Selma sighed and asked, âMills, are you trying to distance yourself from me?â
âOf course not, Grandma,â Millie answered helplessly.
âBut I feel like weâve grown apart,â Selma responded, her voice tinged with sadness. âWe used to enjoy beauty treatments, shopping, and movies together. Youâd always get me ice cream, too.â
âGrandma, I⦠Letâs just get your blood test done first.â
But Selma stubbornly refused and remained seated on the chair. Wearing a pitiful expression, she looked at Millie. It was clear she hoped Millie would join her for lunch at home.
Millie sighed, knowing she couldnât turn her down. âAlright, Grandma. Iâll go home with you for lunch. Can we go and get your blood drawn now?â
Finally, Selma broke into a smile. Then, she obediently went with Millie to finish the rest of her checkâup.
