That night, Millie went out to eat alone. The restaurant was quiet in the deep hours of the night. But looking down from the 20th floor, Yerwickâs vibrant nightlife was on full display.
She cut a small piece of steak and savored it. As she recalled what had happened with Winston earlier, she felt an unexpected sense of calm.
âOh, Mr. Webson, donât you know me by now? Iâm the most loyal person. If you fancy me, then â¦â
A womanâs coquettish voice reached Millieâs ears. She looked up and saw Jake with his arm around a woman. They seemed intimate as they were about to sit down.
âTsk. What a jerk! And he claims Winstonâs behavior doesnât reflect on him. Theyâre the perfect example of birds of a feather flock together,â Millie grumbled to herself.
âMr. Webson, what makes her better than me? Surely, Iâm the better choice to be the face of Webson Group?â
Millie propped her head on her hand, zoning out as she listened to the womanâs complaints. It became clear that she was vying for the ambassador position. So, the âherâ the woman mentioned had to be Rachel.
Millie thought the woman wasnât even in Rachelâs league. Her friend was a top celebrity, irreplaceable and unmatched.
âGet lost.â
Suddenly, Jakeâs deep voice filled Millieâs ears, and her eyes lit up.
The woman was taken aback âYou.â
âWhat about me? I told you to get lost,â Jake snapped, his temper flaring.
Confused, the woman asked, âWhy are you suddenly so upset?â
âYouâre nowhere near Rachelâs level. How dare you compare yourself to her?â Jake sized the woman up and scoffed. âDo you really think youâre a big deal just because Iâm having dinner with you? Leave, now!â
Realization dawned upon the woman as soon as those words left Jakeâs lips. He had lost his temper because she had criticized Rachel.
But she hadnât said anything outrageous! Sheâd only asked what made Rachel better than her. Jake didnât even bother to show her some respect and simply told her to leave.
The woman felt that he was being completely unreasonable. Did he think his wealth gave him the right to act so entitled?
The woman bit her lip as she stared at Jake. Then, she couldnât hold back her tears and shot back, âFine! Iâll leave!â
Jake sighed, ruffling his hair in frustration before picking up his glass. Just as he was about to drink, he heard Millie chuckle.
He hesitated briefly. âMillie?â Jake called out and quickly made his way over to her.
At that moment, Millie was chewing her steak. âYes?â

âWhat are you doing here?â Jake looked at her in surprise.
Millie lifted her head to gaze at him. He was wearing a flashy, multicolored suit jacket that was almost impossible to describe. Beneath it, the collar of his white shirt was streaked with lipstick smudges. His appearance gave off the air of a playb
âIâm having dinner,â Millie replied flatly.
âMillie, could you do me a favor?â Jake asked with a grin.
Right away, Millie answered, âIâm useless. I donât have the capabilities to help you.â
Jake clicked his tongue. âI havenât even told you what the favor is, and youâre already turning me down?â
âYes, Iâm useless,â Millie remarked. It was as if she was talking to herself.
Jake offered, âIâll pay for dinner and buy you a bag!â
Millie looked at him with amusement, clearly indicating, âDo you really think Iâd care about those worthless things?â
Jake put his hands together in a pleading gesture. âMillie, please. Is Simon planning to collaborate with Rachel?â
âYes, thatâs Simonâs plan. But I donât know if itâs happening or not,â Millie answered truthfully.
Jake asked again, âDid you set up the connection?â
Millie hummed in response. Jake, visibly displeased, inquired, âGiven how close we are, why didnât you help me?â
âAre we that close? I donât think so.â Millie continued eating. Her attitude made it clear that she wasnât interested in pretending to be close to him.
âWinstonâs behavior is his own issue. But you and I have known each other for ages, havenât we?â Jake said lightly.
