Chapter 398
GlorÃa glanced at Winston and asked flatly, âSo, youâve decided to marry her?â
âYes.â
Gloria raised an eyebrow. She crossed her arms as she sat on the couch, showing an imposing
presence.
âFine, I wonât meddle further. Since both of you are willing to marry each other, then go ahead and make it happen,â Gloria said, her demeanor clearly showing that she was ready to wash her hands of the situation.
It was the first time she had ever backed down, leaving both Winston and Joanna astonished.
Gloria cast a quick look at Joanna and sighed. âSheâs willing to go to any lengths just to marry you. You must marry her.â
However, she was certain that Joanna would stir up trouble frequently once Winston married her. It was infuriating to think that Winston would give up Millie just to pursue Joanna.
Gloria glared at Winston, her frustration growing as she thought about what her son had done. He was turning out to be a real disappointment!
âMrs. Greer, do you really approve of me marrying Win?â Joanna asked, her eyes brimming with tears. of joy.
Gloria nodded. âYes.â
âMrs. Greerâ¦â Joanna immediately sat up.
Gloria quickly waved her hand, saying, âPlease, donât move.â
Joannaâs health was delicate. She frequently fainted and needed hospitalization. Gloria worried that even a glance could make her a suspect if anything happened to Joanna.
Gloria then approached Winston. Wearing a somber expression, she stared at him and reminded him
in a low voice, âWin, I canât control you forever. But I sincerely hope youâve given careful thought to marrying her.â
Marrying Joanna was a decision Winston had contemplated deeply before making. He lowered his gaze, recalling the doctorâs words from that morning.
The doctor had said, âMs. Lowellâs condition is quite severe. Sheâs at risk of selfâharm at any moment. Her depression also comes with disturbing nightmares.
âShe said she often dreams of falling into the sea, causing her to wake up in fear. Itâs possible she also suffers from thalassophobia. This might be related to the traumatic experience from three years
ago when she was thrown into the sea.â
Winston had asked the doctor, âCan it be treated?â
At first, the doctor nodded. But in the next second, they shook their head. âIt depends on the patientâs

mental strength.â
Winston snapped back to reality. A brief flash of emotion crossed his eyes as he gazed at Gloria.

Joanna had ruined her life just to save him. Hence, he couldnât bring himself to pretend nothing had happened.
Winston nodded in response.
âYou wonât regret this, will you?â Gloria asked, seeking confirmation.
âI wonât.â In actuality, Winston didnât have a choice.
Gloria had to admit that there were many times when Winston seemed so unfamiliar to her. It was to the point that even she, as his mother, could hardly recognize him.
She couldnât wrap her head around why he would go against everyoneâs advice and insisted on doing things his own way.
Regardless, Gloria didnât have the strength to argue with Winston anymore. As an adult, he had to take responsibility for his actions. No matter what happened in the future, even if he regretted it and begged forgiveness one day, she was determined not to sympathize with him.

With that, Gloria left without a backward glance.
For the first time, Joanna felt that Winston was truly on her side. He had rarely defended her in front of the Greers, but this time, he had firmly chosen her.
âThank you, Win,â Joanna said softly, looking at Winston with redârimmed eyes.
However, Winston simply stared at her, his face devoid of emotion. Suddenly, he leaned in closer to Joanna, who looked up pitifully.
In the next second, Winston gripped her chin and spoke in a low, menacing tone, âYouâve saved me before, so you should know that I wonât stand by and watch you die before me.
âBut Joanna, donât do anything so foolish again, and donât try to scheme against me. Otherwise, itâll only push me further away. Do you understand?â
Joanna knew that Winston could always see through her schemes. He was just too perceptive.
She started to understand that his decision to marry her was influenced by her claim of having saved his life. This wasnât a love she had won through genuine affection. It was something she had practically stolen!
