Chapter 411
Layla was about to answer the female researcherâs question when her gaze fell on Millie.
âProfessor Cadmore, why did you bring an irrelevant person into the lab?â
âWhat do you mean by irrelevant? This is my granddaughter!â Layla snapped, her displeasure evident in her tone.
The researcher sized Millie up with hostility. Despite that, Millie wasnât bothered by her look. She was indeed an outsider, after all.
âNaomi, this is my granddaughter. Sheâs not an outsider,â Layla repeated.
Naomie Jaeger was an important figure in the lab. However, her arrogance often rubbed people the wrong way. She looked down on others and considered herself superior.
Yet, the rarity of such talent meant that Layla and the team had to put up with her. She was an outstanding researcher selected from a hundred candidates. Despite her flaws, her skills were undeniable.
Naomi couldnât be bothered with that. She then said, âProfessor Cadmore, Iâve been in this lab for many years. Thereâs something I need to say.â
Layla raised a hand, signaling her to continue. Though she held significant authority, she never put on airs.
She understood that everyone was working toward a common goal and felt that there was no room for disdain. However, as with any group, there were always a few who didnât quite fit in.
âWeâve been working on this for years with no success. Clearly, this problem is unsolvable. I think we should consider dissolving the team once the deadline arrives,
Naomi suggested.
The mention of dissolving the team caused Laylaâs expression to turn solemn immediately.
After years of research and significant investment, how could Naomi suggest they just quit? Once committed to a research project, there was no turning back.
âWe havenât made any major breakthroughs in years, and I doubt we will soon. Professor Cadmore, Iâm proposing this for the sake of the team and you.â

Naomi seemed to have no ill intentions.
âWeâre about to make a significant breakthrough,â Layla declared confidently.
But Naomi remained unmoved.
Layla frowned and added, âNaomi, I made it clear from the beginning that we couldnât give up halfway through.â
Frustrated, Naomi retorted, âBut after so many years without success, why should we continue? We havenât had any breakthroughs for so long. Itâs evident we wonât have any soon!â
âWhat if thereâs a breakthrough?â Millie suddenly interjected.
Naomi scrutinized Millie, her contempt evident and intense.
Millie narrowed her eyes, only to hear Naomi reply, âWhat breakthroughs could there be? Youâre just fooling yourselves with false hopes!â
Having said that, she removed her ID badge and uttered icily, âIâve already submitted my transfer report. Iâll be gone by the end of the year.â
âNaomi, weâve signed a contract!â
If she were to quit now, there would be no one to fill her position.
Naomi responded, âWell, I just canât continue any longer.â
Though she was still young, she felt she needed to produce some successful projects to build her reputation.
Naomi had joined the lab right after graduation. Yet, more than a decade later, the project had still not succeeded. After so many years spent in the shadows, she wondered what it had all been for.
Layla fell silent for a moment. She then raised the Aspher in her hand and asked, âDo you know what this is?â
Naomi glanced at her in confusion. What could it be? She assumed it wasnât something useful to the project and didnât bother to look at it again.
âThis is Aspher!â Layla answered seriously. âNaomi, think about how much youâll lose if you leave the team now.â
With that, Layla led Millie away.

Millie turned back to observe Naomiâs reaction. She first frowned at what Layla had said; then, her eyes widened in disbelief. Finally, she appeared genuinely shocked.
