Chapter 458
Millie cast a wary look at Joanna.
Joanna raised a brow in amusement, saying, âI wonât hurt you. Weâre at a party with people all around us Millie shrugged. She wasnât exactly afraid of her anyway.
They took their seats at the same time. Not far away, Jake was drinking and enjoying the ocean view while stealing occasional glances at the two women.
Joanna sat across from Millie with her arms crossed, looking just like a young lady who grew up in wealth. On the contrary, Millie casually lounged on her chair, looking elegant and at ease.
Millieâs evening dress was way more graceful than Joannaâs. On top of that, she was blessed with great looks. Sitting beside Millie only highlighted Joannaâs flawsâshe was no match for her.
However, that was the least of Joannaâs concerns that night. After a short silence, she began, âLetâs start with Winstonâs abduction.â
Millie was caught off guard for a moment, as she had never openly discussed that incident with Joanna over the years.
Smiling, Joanna asked her, âHave you not told Winston that it was you who saved him, after all these years?â
Millie narrowed her eyes. Joanna knew about the truth because they were good friends back then. After Millie regained consciousness, she told Joanna and Rachel the truth.
At that time, Joanna looked shocked and praised Millie for her courage and willingness to risk everything for Winston. She claimed she wouldnât have had the guts to do the same. According to Joanna, she might not have risked her life to save Winston as she probably put herself above him.
Faced with the same lifeâandâdeath situation, Joanna would not risk her life to save Winston. She only cared for Winston due to his good looks, social status, and net worth.
She coveted Winston because he used to be Millieâs man.
âI havenât,â Millie replied calmly. She then turned her attention to the ocean.
Joannaâs eyes traveled in the same direction. âAre you still scared of the ocean?â
âNo,â replied Millie unemotionally.
Joanna merely smirked. There was no way that Millie had recovered from her fear of the ocean. Reading Millie like a book, she remarked, âYou donât have to act tough around me.â
Millie looked at Joanna with an increasingly steely gaze.
Why didnât you tell him the truth, Millie?â Joanna glanced at her from the corner of her eye, sounding like she was probing around.
Millie chuckled. âDo we really need to bring up love all the time if we truly love someone? Do I need to constantly remind him that I saved his life?â
Joanna shook her head. âBut Millie, Winston has no idea that it was you who saved him.â

âAm I supposed to keep him by my side with that knowledge?â Millie questioned.
Joanna fell silent. Soon, she said aloud, âDoes it even matter if he doesnât love you, as long as he stays by your side?â
âYouâre describing yourself right now, arenât you?â Millie smiled.
The two quickly engaged in a hostile battle of words.
Joanna clenched her right fist. Millie was right. She was talking about herself. It didnât matter if Winston loved her or not; all that mattered was that she laid claims on him.
âJoanna, your relationship is futile. Youâll only end up with nothing, just like me.â Millie put aside her glass of drink and attempted to advise Joanna in good faith. âWinston isnât like other men. He only cares about himself.â
âDo you think Win is a coldâhearted man?â Joanna chuckled.
Millie lifted her gaze. Wasnât he?
Joanna bit her lips and said in a heavy tone, âHe catches feelings for others too.â
âDo you think he has feelings for you? Or me? Who do you think thatâd be?â Millie asked sarcastically with a grin, doubting Joanna.
