Millie glanced at the nurse outside the door and frowned. Was this typical of the Stringers? Maybe it was. Why else would Sean have been abroad for so many years?
Millie approached the bedside and tucked the blanket around Sean. He was still on an IV drip, and his heart rate appeared stable.
She thought about checking the wound on his stomach. However, with no one else around, she felt lifting his blanket and shirt was inappropriate.
After thinking it over, Millie dismissed the idea. Instead, she sent a text to Marvin.
Millie: âPlease bring some antiâinflammatory cream when you come to the hospital.â
Marvin: âOkay.â
Millie pouted at Marvinâs reply and asked, âYou rascal, why are you so cold to me?â
But Marvin didnât respond. Displeased, Millie sent another message, âSo now youâre ignoring me, huh?â
She was well aware that Marvin was upset.
Suddenly, Sean coughed, causing Millie to look up and see him staring at her.
âYouâre awake!â Millie immediately placed the back of her hand on his forehead. He was still running a
fever.
Sean cleared his throat, feeling as though it was on fire.
âWhy did you jump into the sea when you were already hurt?â Millieâs tone carried a hint of reproach.
Sean mustered a weak smile and asked, âWould you have wanted me to watch you die there?â
Millie was momentarily speechless. It made sense. âSo, weâre even now.â
She had saved his life, and now he had returned the favor.
Sean looked into Millieâs eyes and hummed in agreement. âYes, weâre even now.â
After a while, he lowered his gaze. As Millie poured him a glass of water, she heard him muttering, âWhy didnât he save you?â
âWhat?â Millie asked. She couldnât make out what he said; his voice was barely audible.
Sean looked up and repeated, âWhy did Winston save Joanna instead of you?â
âOh,â Millie replied softly and added, âHe likes Joanna, so of course, heâd save her first. Iâm nothing to him.
âYou loved him for years and even married him. Though youâre divorced now, doesnât he feel anything at all? Do you-â Seanâs tone became increasingly urgent, and he started coughing.
Millie quickly handed him a glass of water. âDrink some water and donât worry about me.â
But Sean didnât accept it. He asked in disbelief, âWhen did he become so heartless?â

Millie lowered her head. She didnât know either. Winston was different back in high school. However, everything changed after university and the kidnapping incident.
âI noticed yesterday that you and Joanna have identical scars on your backs,â Sean suddenly remarked.
Millie looked up in surprise. Sean could tell what had caught her off guard.
âYour tattoo is beautiful, but it canât hide the scar underneath, especially not one that severe.â
A faint smile played on Millieâs lips as she took a sip of water, saying nothing. Her silence was a clear sign of her resignation.
âHow did you get that scar?â Sean asked.
Millie met his gaze and answered seriously, âIt happened when I saved him.â
Sean was even more astonished. âSaved him?â
Was Millie referring to Winston?
âYes, it was the year Winston was kidnapped. I risked my life to save him on my own,â Millie explained, touching her back. âThe kidnapper slashed me, weighed me down with a rock, and tried to drown meâ¦â
Sean was stunned beyond words. âWhat? It was you?â
