Chapter 5276: Fortune-telling
âFortune-telling, fortune-telling, fortune tellingâ¦â An old man on the street repeated this phrase like an emotionless machine only capable of one thing. The tone and pace remained exactly the same.
His robe had patches on them but was as clean as can be - an indicator of his meticulous personality. He seemed to be visually impaired, unable to see anyone passing by. His only companion was the sun and the repeated chant with no end in sight.
He had a bamboo stick that was most likely used for walking. It also resembled a staff meant for striking snakes. It had eight colors, seemingly polished to have a glazed texture. Its shine tempted others to touch and feel its surface.
Thus, more people actually paid attention to his stick rather than him despite his bizarre nature.
Li Qiye was one of them. He stopped and took a look at the old fortune-teller.
Li Zhitan and the others paused as well. The old servant noticed the stick: âThis bamboo stickâ¦â
âFortune-telling?â The old manâs tone finally changed after noticing someone standing in front of him.
âAccurate?â Li Qiye sighed and asked.
âAbsolutely accurate, and it is also free.â The old man said.
âFree?â Li Zhitian became curious.
âFortune-telling is peering into the wills of the heaven. There cannot be a payment or a tribulation is inevitable.â The old man said seriously.
âThatâs a thing?â Zhitian was surprised once more.
âAllow me to read your fortune to dispel any skepticism.â The old man reached for Zhitianâs hand.
He couldnât dodge the old manâs advance despite being a twelve-fruit dragon lord.
âVery well, Sir. Please read my fortune.â Since he was caught already, he decided to go with the flow.
The old man held Zhitianâs palm and started gently tracing the lines, needing to rely on the touch instead of his eyes.
âYour fate is vast.â After a while, the old man concluded.
âWhat do you mean by that?â Zhitian asked.
âA fate encompassing vast possibilities and branches but most importantly, avoiding the great calamities.â The old man continued: âAs long as your heart is kind and compassionate, your remaining years will be filled with glory and success. I offer you two words, benevolent heart.â
âBenevolent heart.â Zhitian murmured.
âPlease read my fortune.â The old servant became interested and offered his hand.
The fortune-teller held his hand and gently traced the palm: âYour fate is very thick.â
âHow so?â The old servant asked for elaboration.
âA profound and far-reaching destiny, albeit progressing at a snailâs pace. Small steps are needed before covering great distances.â The old man said: âYou do have a lucky star. With their help, you will attain indescribable prosperity and fulfillment.â
âThank you, Sir.â The old servant bowed and didnât ask for much more. Knowing too much about the future might not be a good thing.
âRaa!â True Bear became interested as well and touched the old fortune-tellerâs hand.
Li Zhitian chuckled after seeing the excited bear. Of course, he didnât think the old fortune-teller would have a problem with this because the bear was sentient.
The old man didnât refuse and started tracing the paw earnestly, seemingly checking the shape of the bones.
âYour fate is filled with adversity and fatal perils. They are unavoidable and you will have a hard time escaping from their clutches. However, if you encounter noble individuals, prosperity and opportunities will replace disasters.â The old man concluded.
âRaa.â The bear let out a quiet cry and seemingly bowed to show his gratitude.
âFortune-telling, fortune-telling, fortune-tellingâ¦â The old man went back to chanting as if it was as crucial as breathing.
He paused for a moment and stared at Li Qiye: âDo you want your fortune told?â
âMy fate isnât an easy one to be read.â Li Qiye smiled.
âAll fates can be examined. Good or bad, that is up to the heaven.â The old man said.
âTrue.â Li Qiye nodded in agreement.
âSo how about it?â The old man insisted.
Li Qiye stared at the old man before letting out a soft sigh. He raised his hand and said: âCanât refuse a free reading, I suppose. Go for it.â
The old manâs expression became solemn the moment he touched Li Qiyeâs hand. As the assessment continued, it became increasingly grave. He then let go of the hand.
âHow is it?â Li Qiye asked.
âYour fate is as noble as the heaven, I canât and shouldnât read it.â The old man shook his head.
âYes, I myself canât delve too deeply into it, let alone others.â Li Qiye agreed.
âAs noble as the heaven.â The old man remained tight-lipped as if these secrets shouldnât be revealed.
âHave you read your own fortune?â Li Qiye asked.
âYes, a destined death.â The old man said.
âIf you have foreseen it, why not walk a different path?â Li Qiye asked.
âI do not fear what is written in my destiny. In fact, using my life to prove my fate is the truth.â The old man said.
âDeath is the end, only bones remain.â Li Qiye said.
âEverlasting life means countless bones.â The old man responded.
âCanât argue with that.â Li Qiye nodded and stared into the distance: âWhere should I go from here?â
âNot to be foretold, and it shouldnât be either.â The old man had an answer.
âHow so?â Li Qiye pressed on.
âEverything about you is already predetermined whether I calculate or otherwise.â The old man said.
âIf thatâs the case, maybe I should just go be a shepherd.â Li Qiye shook his head.
âBut that is not your fate, so you wonât.â The man said.
âI determine my fate, not the heaven.â Li Qiye said.
âAnd if youâre you?â The old man answered with a question.
âHuhâ¦â Li Qiye smiled wryly and stroked his chin: âI see, that is a compelling argument. If Iâm the heaven and my fate is determined by me, then it is still the heavenâs decision. Seems like Iâm digging my own grave.â
âThis is your destiny.â The old man couldnât help but say.
âUnfortunately, Iâm not a believer. My fate is stronger and so is my determination and dao heart. Fate cannot dictate my path.â Li Qiye shook his head.
âYou are one of the few who speaks such words, perhaps the only one who is carrying it out.â The old man said.
âI am alone on this path toward the dao, so I wonât allow the heaven to outmatch my fate.â Li Qiye smiled.
âI seeâ¦â The old man contemplated in silence.
âWe are all insignificant ants.â he commented after a while.
âYes, but it is worthwhile to become an ant capable of baring its fangs.â Li Qiye said.
âToward whom?â The old man asked.
âThat depends on the toughness of the antâs dao heart.â Li Qiye smiled.
