Chapter 5288: Grand Saber
âI never had big dreams and I still enjoyed my life.â The man said.
âDonât you want to make money and just hang around the tavern? Thatâs a dream too. Small dreams are still dreams.â Li Qiye said.
âYouâre right, so I guess thatâs my dream.â The man said.
âPeople build one small dream on top of another. When they pile up, they become a big dream.â Li Qiye said.
âThatâs a good point.â The man said before becoming cautious: âYou know, I feel that thereâs something off about you ever since you got here.â
âWhat do you mean?â Li Qiye asked while chewing some edamame.
âWell, if I have to put it into words, you are an instigator who will push me into doing something bad.â The man stroked his chin and said.
âNo way that a good person such as myself would do that.â Li Qiye smiled and shook his head.
âWho knows? People who talk about dreams are always trying to sell something bad, definitely not to be trusted.â The man remained skeptical.
âSigh, that hurts. Here I am bringing money to your doorstep yet you call me an instigator.â Li Qiye lamented before taking out another silver ingot and pushing it across the table.
The manâs eyes gleamed after seeing the ingot. He grabbed it for a testing bite before putting it into his pocket and releasing a sigh of satisfaction.
âThe customer is always right.â He nodded and said.
âYou really have no principles.â Li Qiye couldnât help but laugh.
âPrinciples? Can that be sold for money?â The man said with a serious expression.
âTo be honest, I donât hate the way you are now, itâs pretty endearing.â Li Qiye said seriously back.
âIâve always been like this.â The man said with a puzzled expression.
âNot necessarily. Letâs just say that another version of you would be carrying a long saber to chase me from east to west, wanting to cut off my head.â Li Qiye said.
âNonsense, thatâs not something I would do. My elder brother might do that though, heâs a dry person who rarely smiles. Of course, if that situation actually occurs, it means that you must have done something egregiously wrong.â The man shook his head.
âMy only fault is wanting to spread warmth and love everywhere.â Li Qiye shook his head.
âItâs hard to say, what if you kidnap someoneâs daughter?â The man slapped his thigh and said: âHe would really chase you around with a saber then.â
âDoes he have a daughter?â Li Qiye entertained the thought.
âWell, Iâm not sure, maybe he does, but then again, maybe not.â The man scratched his chin; his memories seemed a bit muddled.
âBam!â He suddenly slammed the table, stood up, and pointed at Li Qiye: âBut you do look like the type to be kidnapping nice girls! A regular saber wouldnât be enough, a grand saber would be more appropriate to chop your head off and hang it on the city wall!â
âCalm down, calm down, no one is kidnapping your daughter or any other daughter for that matter.â Li Qiye said.
âUh⦠youâre right.â The man snapped out of it and sat down, looking a bit dazed. He glanced at Li Qiye and asked: âYou really didnât kidnap anyoneâs daughter?â
âAbsolutely not. Just think about it, sheâs a grown-up who is rather clever. How can she be kidnapped or tricked so easily? If she had gone with someone, it must be out of her own volition, donât you think?â Li Qiye said.
âThe way you put it does make sense.â The man stroked his chin: âSheâs not a child and definitely not an idiot.â
At this point, he shook his head: âMaybe Iâve drunk too much, getting all worked up over nothing since I donât even have a daughter.â
âWhat about your elder brother?â Li Qiye asked with a faint smile.
âI donât know, we havenât seen each other since we were born, I donât know if he has a daughter.â The man scratched his head and said something nonsensical.
âThatâs strange.â Li Qiye responded.
âItâs for the best, I got annoyed just looking at him. Do you know when you brought up someone capable of shouldering the heaven? Thatâs him, just a fool who doesnât know how to enjoy life.â The man said.
âEveryone carries something on their shoulder.â Li Qiye said.
âNot me, I donât care if the sky falls down since taller people will be the ones shouldering.â The man shrugged.
âWhat if it falls on your tavern?â Li Qiye joked.
âWeâll talk about this when it is actually happening.â The man glanced outside and said.
Li Qiye stared at the man and couldnât help but sigh softly. He went on to peel an edamame pod, not continuing the conversation.
After a brief silence, he said: âYou know, you donât need to be stuck in this tavern forever.â
âLike I said, Iâm content here just living a simple life.â The man responded.
âWhat comes after?â Li Qiye said before eating the edamame beans.
âNothing.â The man was becoming agitated.
âYou know there is something that comes after.â Li Qiye said.
âI just need to make money now, why bother worrying about the future?â The man said.
âI suppose, everyone makes their own choice.â Li Qiye nodded and said.
âYou, as well.â The man said.
âI want to, but there is no other choice.â Li Qiye shook his head.
âYou got a working head and a working body, so why do you think you have no choice?â The man said.
âBecause if I choose, I will cease to be myself.â Li Qiye said seriously.?â¯
âWhat? Why wouldnât you be yourself?â The man didnât understand.
âJust like how you are not yourself in the dream, rowing the enormous boat in order to reach the other shore despite being exhausted.â Li Qiye elaborated.
âI see.â The man fell into contemplation, seemingly struggling with his thoughts.
After a while, he shook his head and said: âThat was just a dream. There is no problem staying in this tavern and living a simple life.â
âEveryone can choose another version of themselves, itâs just that itâll be an incomplete version.â Li Qiye sighed.
âAre you complete now?â He stared at Li Qiye.
âYes, this is me, the only version of myself.â Li Qiye nodded.
âThat sounds like a tiring and pitiful way to live.â The man commented.
âAnd thatâs why many people prefer to be incomplete versions instead.â Li Qiye agreed.
