Jamie
He held my hand as we walked into the club. With drunk people dancing around us, I was definitely feeling out of my comfort zone.
It had been a while since Iâd been in a nightclub. It just wasnât my scene anymore. Jack seemed happy that we were here though. This was all his idea.
âAre you excited to meet my friends?â he asked.
He seemed excited about it, but as for me, I was just feeling nervous.
âSure, I canât wait!â
âThere they are.â He led the way through the crowd toward the people sitting at a high table.
Jack met my family, and so he thought it seemed fitting that I meet his friends.
I was nervous about meeting a group of new people, especially since I wasnât sure if we were there yet in our relationship. Things seem to be moving a little too fast.
Maybe I was just nervous because Jack is the first guy Iâve dated in a while. I wasnât exactly a pro at relationships. I was actually pretty sucky when it came to dating.
âThere he is. I just knew you would be late!â A man stood from the table, and I could immediately see how tall he was.
His hair was sandy blond in color, and he looked to be around the same age as Jack.
âSorry. It was Jamieâs fault!â Jack joked.
âMy fault. Is that so?â I looked at his friends.
The tall blond seemed to be the single one since he hadnât taken his eyes off my breasts since we walked in. There was a short-haired brunette and the guy that she was sitting next to.
âHeâs lying. I was the one actually waiting on him. He was late picking me up.â
The brunette laughed. âThat sounds like our Jack.â
âHey, Iâm not late all the time. Just sometimes. Iâm a doctor, so I get a little busy, you know, saving lives and all that. What else can I say?â
He looked at me and smiled. âSo, Jamie, these are my good friends, Gavin, Sara, and Luke.â
âItâs nice to meet you all!â
âItâs nice to finally meet the famous Jamie. You know, Jack has talked a lot about you these past couple of weeks,â Luke said.
âOh really?â I looked at Jack. âYou talked about me?â
He smirked. âYeah, maybe a little!â
âA lot, actually. We couldnât get him to shut the hell up.â Gavin chuckled. âLetâs get another round of drinks. I donât know about all of you, but I plan on getting drunk tonight.â
âIâll go with you.â Jack pressed a kiss to my cheek, and I blushed, seeing as it was in front of his friends. âIâll be right back, babe.â
I removed my jacket and sat on a high stool at the table. I was alone with Sara and Luke, so I decided to use this opportunity to find out a little more about Jack.
âSo, how long have you known Jack?â
âWell, Iâve known him since college. He was a little crazy back in those days, but heâs tamed himself a little since heâs become a doctor,â Luke said.
âWhat do you mean a little crazy?â I asked and smiled. âShould I be worried?â
âNo, you have nothing to worry about. He just liked to party back then, but who doesnât when theyâre in college?â
âSure, I understand. I liked my college days too.â I looked at Sara. âSo, what about you?â
âJust since I started dating Luke here.â She wrapped her arms around him. âIâm from Germany originally, so when I moved here, I had no one. That was until Luke came along.â
The two of them looked at each other and smiled before sharing a kiss. It was like no one else was in the room for those few seconds, just the two of them. âYou guys are so sweet!â
âWeâve been together for a couple of years. Iâm so glad that after this long, the romance is still there.â Sara drank from her beer bottle. âSo. Jack mentioned that you have a daughter. How old is she?â
âShe turned one last week.â
âHe also mentioned an ex that keeps getting in the way. Is he going to be a problem?â Luke asked, and Sara glared at him. âI hate to hit you with hard questions. I just donât want him getting hurt.â
âItâs fine.â Of course, it wasnât. I now felt even more uncomfortable on my high stool. âNo, there wonât be a problem. Masonâs in my daughterâs life, not mine.â
âAnd you donât have any feelings for him?â
I cleared my throat and smiled lightly. âNo, Iâve no feelings toward him. Iâve moved on now.â
He smiled because I had given him the answers that he wanted. His girlfriend, on the other hand, looked a little uncomfortable, just like I did.
âThatâs good to know. Here they come with the drinks.â
Jack placed a drink in front of me. âThey didnât tell you any embarrassing stories about me, did they?â
âNo, only good things, I promise.â I picked up my drink. âThank you for the drink.â
âYouâre welcome, babe.â He inched his face toward mine and captured my lips in a kiss. âTonight is going to be a good night. Maybe you can stay at my place.â
I smiled to cover what I was feeling.
Uncertainty about sleeping with him was what I was feeling.
Too soon. I donât know. Weâd been seeing each other for a couple of weeks. I couldnât keep him waiting forever.
~I like Jack. Heâs a good guy, and heâs very handsome. Why wait?~
As the night went on, it had become clear to me how much Jack liked to drink. I didnât expect him to get blind drunk tonight, but he was definitely getting there.
The three men had taken themselves to the bar for their second round of shots.
Sara and I were the only ones at the table, and I couldnât help but feel like she was being a little standoffish with me. âAre they always like that?â
âOh definitely!â She chuckled lightly. âThey go a little crazy when theyâre all together.â
âItâs funny. Iâve just never seen that side of Jack before. Heâs usually so reserved.â
I guess his party side came out tonight. I was learning a lot about him that I didnât know before.
âHmm. Thatâs just the side he wants you to see.â
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
Sara shook her head. âNothing, just forget I said anything.â
She looked at me, knowing well that she had to explain and that I wasnât just going to let her comment go.
âJackâs not always the perfect gentleman that he makes himself out to be.â
âI donât understand.â
She glanced to the left, noticing that the guys were walking back to our table. âLook, I like you, Jamie. You seem like a nice girl. Just be careful of him, okay?â
âHey, what are you two talking about?â Jack asked and slung his arm around my shoulder.
âNothing much. Just girl talk.â
I looked at Sara, wishing she could tell me more, but the moment was gone. She couldnât tell me anything now. At least, not tonight.
It was close to eleven when I walked out of the bar with Jack. He was drunk, and I wasnât, and he left, not because heâd had too much to drink, which he definitely had, but because I was leaving.
âIâll just see where my keys are.â He reached into his pocket.
âYou canât drive home, Jack. Youâve had too much to drink.â
Originally, Jack had picked me up in his car, and we drove here. Heâd told me we would get a taxi if he decided to drink more than one. Heâs clearly not thinking straight.
âIâm fine to drive, babe. Iâve sobered up already.â
It was quite clear to me that he hadnât, and I wasnât comfortable with this situation at all. âLet me get a cab, and you can come back and pick up your car tomorrow.â
I flagged down a cab straight away, thankfully. It was a cold night, and I wasnât exactly dressed appropriately for the weather. I opened the cab door for him.
Jack turned around and looked at me. âYouâre not coming with me?â
âNot tonight, Call you in the morning?â
âSure, babe. Iâll see you later.â
Jack got into his cab and left. He was too drunk to even realize that I had to take a cab home alone. Usually, a guy would be worried about that sort of thing when it came to his girlfriend.
âJamie.â
I turned around when I heard the familiar voice call my name. âEoin. Hi!â
âWhat are you doing down here?â he asked as he walked closer.
I noticed a takeout bag in his hand, and I then remembered that he lived in the area. Not that Iâd been to Eoinâs place, but I remembered him mentioning it.
âI was just out with some friends. Well, Jackâs friends, actually.â
âJack. The new guy, right? Mason told me about him. Was that the guy I just saw getting into a cab? Did he leave you here to get home alone?â
âWell, yes, but he was drunk,â I replied, and he looked even more unimpressed.
~I suppose he thinks Jack is an asshole now.~
âJack didnât know his limit, I guess. I just wanted to make sure that he got home safe.â
âWell, itâs not exactly safe for a woman to take a cab home alone. I live around the corner. I can drive you back.â
âNo, thatâs okay. Iâm sure you have things to do.â
âHonestly, itâs fine. I donât mind bringing you as long as you help me eat all this? I kind of ordered half the menu.â He smirked.
I chuckled. âOkay, sure! I can do that.â
I was standing in the living room of Eoinâs small apartment, looking at the few family photos he had on display.
Although Eoin and I had become somewhat close when Mason was gone, I had never seen the inside of his apartment. Heâd been at my home quite a few times, but Iâd never been to his.
âThese are cute. Your family looks so happy.â I picked up the framed photo.
âIt hasnât always been that way.â Eoin walked across the room with two beer bottles in hand and handed me one. âWe went through a tough time when Aunt Penelope died.â
âHow so?â
âWell, we were close, spent weekends and holidays together, that sort of thing. But after she died, Harry and Mason drifted away from all of us. We didnât hear from them again until years later.â
âThatâs sad. Iâm sure they didnât want it to be that way. At least now youâre making up for lost time.â
âThatâs why Iâm here in New York. I wanted to make up for lost time. Family is important.â He took the picture from my hand. âThis one is my favorite.â
Eoin set the picture down and took a seat on the sofa. My phone vibrated on the coffee table, and I picked it up.
It was a drunken message from Jack telling me that he was thinking of me.
âIs that him? Jack?â Eoin asked.
âYeah, heâs just checking in to make sure I got home safe. Iâll text him back later.â More like in the morning. Iâd let him sleep it off first.
âSo, are you serious about him? It seems like you are, considering you went out with him to meet his friends tonight. Mason mentioned that he was at Penelopeâs birthday too.â
âWell, to be fair, I didnât exactly invite him to her birthday.â
I settled down on the sofa beside him. âJackâs a good guy, and I like him. But I donât know where weâre going yet. Maybe itâs too soon to tell.â
âDoes your hesitation have something to do with Mason?â
âUm. A little, maybe,â I sighed. âI was perfectly happy with Jack until Mason decided to kiss me. Now Iâm just so confused.â
Eoin chuckled. âWhen did this kiss happen?â
âAfter Penelopeâs party last week. He wants to get back together. But I donât know if I can trust him again. He left before. Thereâs no guarantee that he wonât up and leave if things get too much.â
âI understand. Iâm sure Mason does too, deep down. I know he desperately wants you to trust him again. Heâs trying hard to prove himself.â
He sighed. âBut at the end of the day, itâs your choice to make. Youâve been hurt by him. If you canât forgive him fully, then it might be better to move on.â
~Forgive him fully! I donât know about that.~
Heâd come back into my life and messed with it. Heâd expected forgiveness right off the bat. I didnât know if I could trust him again. I didnât even know if I wanted to put myself through all that uncertainty.
I drank from my beer bottle. âI donât know. I guess weâll see.â
