Just then, someone knocked at the door. Bettyâs sickly, sweet voice floated through. âAre you in there, Dad?â
âCome in.â
Betty opened the door and walked in with a plate of snacks. She was smiling widely.
âIâm sorry for causing you trouble today. I specially prepared some of your favorite fruits and treats to seek your forgiveness. Please donât be angry at me anymore, okay?â
Betty set the plate on the table. She then went over to Javier, intending to act spoiled like she used to whenever Javier got angry at her for causing trouble.
But this time, Javier stopped her with a raised hand.
âI hope this is the last time you ever misbehave in a manner unbefitting someone of your status. Youâre Ms. Betty Beckett, not some rich, disrespectful warlord. You have to behave in a classy manner.
Otherwise, how would you be any different from a mad woman?â Javier chastised.
Bettyâs arms were left hanging awkwardly in mid-air. Her smile was dry and pitiful. âYes, Dad. I wonât misbehave again.â
Javier said nothing else. He didnât even eat any of the snacks Betty brought.
âWeâll be attending the horse racing event in a couple of days, Dad. Didnât you say I looked good in my riding habit before? I had a set customized for you. The tailor just brought it over. Why donât you go downstairs and try it on?â Betty asked.
She tried her best to appease Javier as his anger toward her hadnât. completely dissipated.
âI think itâs best you donât attend the race this time, Betty,â Javier said. lightly.
âWhat?â Betty gasped. She immediately stomped her feet angrily. Why not? You bring me there every single year!â
âThis year is an exception.â
âWhy?â Betty demanded, her face beginning to crumple in anger. âAll the rich socialites and heiresses will be there. How could you not bring me?â
âIâll be bringing Lauren to this yearâs races.â Javier looked down, not even sparing a glance at Betty.
âHow could you do that?â There was a loud, droning noise in Bettyâs head.
âWhy canât I? Lauren is my daughter and a member of our family too,â Javier responded.
When he looked at Betty now, there was a coldness in his eyes that had never been seen before.
âPlus, youâve already been to the races. for so many years. You must be bored of it by now. Lauren has never attended the event, and many people in Solana City donât know her well.
âFrom now on, Iâll give Lauren more chances to make a public appearance. Itâs only fair.â
Fair?
Javier had neglected Lauren for more than a decade, but here he was suddenly bringing up the issue of fairness?
âWhat is it? You donât seem very happy.â Javier cocked an eyebrow. nounât you Do Luminy vurunu snunny her, being her big sister and all?â
âItâs⦠itâs not that, Dad⦠Lauren is autistic. What if she has a meltdown at the races when you bring her there? How could she handle it all?â Betty stammered.
âYou donât need to worry about that. Mr. Harper will be taking good care of her.â
Betty flushed red and paled at the same time. She had nothing else to say now.
âYou can leave now. I have some things I need to do,â Javier said.
Bettyâs expression was stiff and pale. When she turned to leave, she ground her teeth, her eyes boiling with rage.
