âI intended to do so as well,â Jonah replied, nodding solemnly.
Winston looked at his old friend. âVictor, it would help to have Josh aid in the investigation, given heâs the CEO. You wouldnât mind if he aids Jonah, would you?â
âWhatâs with the politeness? How could I possibly ignore something so serious thatâs affected Lyse?
Help Uncle Winston as much as you can, Josh. You must investigate this thoroughly so Lyse is avenged!â
Victor exclaimed.
He was secretly grateful for Winstonâs decision. The police shouldâve been called on to look into such a grave matter, but Winston chose to handle this privately on account of their decades-long friendship.
If the police were involved, then so would the media. Since this incident occurred at Schmidtâs Racecourses and Alyssa was injured from it, the Schmidt familyâs reputation would surely be affected if known to the public.
âAlright, Iâll do my best to help Mr. Taylor,â Josh said.
However, Jasperâs voice rang out the moment he finished speaking, â Thereâs no need to go to the trouble. Iâve already apprehended the person who injured the horse.â
Everyone gazed at him in shock and awe.
Alyssa stared fixedly at Jasper, her eyes filled with sheer astonishment.
âBring them in, Xavier,â Jasper instructed.
What followed was a flurry of footsteps.
Xavier and two bodyguards were dragging Max over to them. The latter was covered in dirt and looked completely disheveled.
âM-Max?â Everyone in the Harper family, save Landon, was stunned.
Meanwhile, Zoe had turned stark white in the face as she took a fearful step back.
An hour ago, Landon called Jasper over to his side.
âZoe?â Jasperâs eyebrows pulled tight.
âIâll serve my own head on a silver platter if that damned brat wasnât involved!â Landon roared, fingers quivering angrily around the cigarette he was holding.
âYou donât need to do that. We have tons of food at home,â Jasper responded.
He got a cigarette from Landon but didnât light it up. It remained tucked between his fingers. âZoe is your sister, so Iâll give you one chance to deal with the matter. Iâm afraid you wonât like the methods Iâd use to deal with this.â
âI keep having this feeling that Zoe was involved in this or knew something about it.â
Landon still had a shred of hope for his sister, so he began doubting himself. âBut I donât have concrete evidence, Jasper. I feel like Zoe must have known something. Her resentment toward the fact that you and Alyssa are together provides her with a motive as well. But I donât have proof to make this conclusion, Jasper.â
âDid you realize how long-winded youâve become after falling in love?â Jasper asked, gazing flatly at his friend.
Landon was taken aback for a moment. He then sighed. âIâve been uniny Ìaut ings way in untulluciicu as I used to be now that I have Lauren.â
Jasperâs fingers tightened around the cigarette. However, he stayed silent, capable of empathizing with Landon.
âI can help you investigate this secretly, Jasper, butâ¦
âI know. Mr. Cornelius dotes very much on Zoe. Youâll need his support for your relationship with Lauren, too, so you canât be making rash decisions that would jeopardize yourself in the old manâs eyes,â Jasper said.
Landon nodded fervently, wearing an expression that said, âYou get it!â
Jasper smiled lightly and patted Landonâs shoulder. âIâll be the bad guy this time. I hope this doesnât hurt innocent bystanders but punishes those who deserve it instead.â
