Jasper had used his own body to protect her. His breathing was slow and irregular. âAre you ⦠okay, Lyse?
âWhat is wrong with you? I should be asking you that question!â Alyssa cried.
A stinging pain pricked the back of her nose and forced tears into her eyes.
Pain flared from the back of Jasperâs head. His vision began to blur, though he still sported a fond smile.
âYou care about me, thatâs all thatâ¦â
Everything suddenly went black.
Alyssaâs heart stopped instantaneously. She clung onto Jasperâs body as it collapsed, crying out, âJasper!â
The man who tried attacking Lyla was swiftly subdued and taken under Cyrusâ hold.
As he was being shoved into the police car, Alyssa suddenly lunged at him, ready to strike.
Cyrus held her back just in time, consoling her, âLeave him to me, Lyse! Iâll deal with him for you. Donât dirty your hands with a goon like him!â
âIâm going to kill him! Iâm going to kill him, even if itâs the last thing I do!â Alyssa yelled hysterically, struggling in her brotherâs grasp.
Silas and Jonah quickly came over, both shocked by how Alyssa was behaving.
Though they knew Alyssa to be steadfast and swift to take action, she was always composed, never as hysterical as she was right now.
The aggressor was swiftly locked up in the car. Before it drove off, he even shot Alyssa a dark, cunning grin.
âDonât let him go easy, Cyrus! Donât!â Alyssa cried, glaring at him with all her might. Pain and anger welled up in her chest.
âDonât worry, Lyse.â Cyrus nodded, getting into one of the cars.
Alyssa stood alone, watching the cars leave. She was shaking terribly, her hands balled into fists.
âLyse.â Jonah came over to hug her.
now to have the best doctors treat him. Iâm sure heâll be fine.â
âYeah, Lyse â
Silas went to her side, adding, âJasperâs been in the army before, so his bodyâs seen worse. That hit on the head is probably nothing to him.â
âNothing to him?â Alyssaâs heart clenched painfully.
She ground her teeth, exclaiming. âThat bat was made of metal! He may be strong, but itâs already a miracle that he didnât die from that hit right then and there. Yet here you are still saying⦠that itâs nothing to him?â
Silas flinched, feeling upset at himself. Now wasnât the time to kid around.
âI know every single doctor in our familyâs hospital, but no one is a better doctor than myself.â
Alyssa took a deep breath, pushing away from Jonah. âIâm going to the hospital right now. If anything happens to Jasper, heâs answerable to me!â
The two Taylor brothers sighed in unison as their sister left.
âDid I misspeak just now, Jonah?â Silas asked worriedly.
âYou did. Jasper saved Alyssaâs life after all, and he still hasnât completely recovered. You shouldnât have joked about it,â came Jonahâs stern response.
âItâs my fault⦠It was only thanks to Jasper that Lyse wasnât the one being sent to the hospital right now. I shouldnât have spoken without thinking. I didnât mean anything badâ¦â Silas sighed.
The more he thought about it, the guiltier he felt.
He cried, âPlease help me, Jonah⦠Iâm so worried Lyse will stay angry at me!â
âShe wonât. Lyse never stays mad at us for more than a night.â
