âWell, I just thought you might not be able to save me. I mean, you wonât be rescuing a damsel in distress. Youâll just be adding to my troubles,â Alyssa made up an excuse.
She added, âJasper has a different physique. Heâs stronger than the average guy. He stands a better chance of surviving the surgery. I might not have been successful in saving you if you were injured, and Iâd be burdened with guilt for the rest of my life.â
Jameson frowned, his heart sinking.
âOh, by the way, welcome to Belbanks! Can I treat you to dinner tonight?â Alyssa extended an invitation with a smile, not wanting his trip to Belbanks to be in vain.
âLyse, come with me to Solana City. Weâll have dinner there,â he said, his eyes suddenly brightening.
âIâll also bring you to a place youâll love.â
After some consideration, she nodded. She wasnât particularly keen on the place Jameson had in mind.
In fact, she planned to return to Solana City to meet with Cyrus as they were investigating the assailant behind the attack on Lyla.
Since Alyssa insisted on treating Jameson to dinner, he accepted the offer and took her to the restaurant where they had first dined.
The atmosphere was light and cheerful, but Alyssa appeared troubled due to the issues on her mind.
âHave you you not resolved Madam Lylaâs issue?â Jameson wondered with concern as he took a sip of tea.
âThe attacker is still at the police station. He confessed to the crime,â she replied in a low voice, gripping her cup indignantly.
âDoes the police know where to look into?â
His sudden question gave her an idea, and she asked, âJudging from your question, I wonder if you have any thoughts on this.â
He smiled and quickly tapped on his phone.
A notification sounded on her phone. Jameson had sent her photos of the attacker and his background Jameson explained while pouring her some tea, âThis guy used to work on-site for TS Network 20 years ago. He later became a stuntman. But a few years ago, he suffered a left leg fracture in a filming incident âJimmy, thatâs not how I see you.â
âI deeply regret arriving late, just after Jasper. If I had been there earlier, I could have protected you, too,â he argued, his tone growing intense. Regrets gnawed at his soul.
âWow, you totally shouldnât! It was such a violent attack. You could have ended up with head trauma,â
she said, waving her hands at him.
Each time she met his gaze, an unsettling feeling overcame her. She said, âJasper took the blow for me. You should stay out of this.â
âWhy him and not me? Do you genuinely believe only Jasper Beckett could protect you?â he pressed, his voice taut with tension.
She leaned backward out of shock. âNo, thatâs not the case. I donât want you to be hurt. Why would you insist on taking the blow for me? You shouldnât ever consider that, even if it were to save me.â
A warmth enveloped Jameson, a sensation he hadnât felt in a while. Gazing at her tenderly, he asked, â
Lyse, you care about me, donât you?â
Alyssa felt shaken. Jasper had often posed the same question after their divorce. Every time, sheâd chastise and mock him harshly. Despite that, she still felt a pang of pain deep in her heart when he asked that question.
In contrast, she felt nothing when Jameson did the same, which was totally fine. It further proved that Jasper meant more to her than Jameson.
