Jasper silently lamented. How could he possibly be responsible for what happened in Alyssaâs dream?
Regardless, he had indeed scarred Alyssa with his poor treatment of her.
âWhy donât you contact Mr. Jonah instead? We learned that Madam had gone home to Belbanks. I believe Mr. Jonah must know where she is,â Xavier threw out a good suggestion.
Jasper glared at him. âItâs absurd that, as president of Beckett Group, I have to call her family because I couldnât locate her. What if Jonah doesnât know either? Should I call all her brothers then? Get out of my sight.â
âOkay. Iâm leaving!â Xavier quietly left the office, knowing that Jasper was in a foul mood.
After the door closed, Jasper dialed Jonahâs number right away. Jonah picked up and spoke with an emotionless tone, âMr. Beckett, howâs your injury?â
Jasper ignored the question and worriedly asked, âMr. Jonah, is Lyse with you?â
âNo, sheâs not. Why? Is she unreachable?â
Jasper breathed heavily and informed Jonah, âSheâs not answering. I called her a few times.â
âOh, thatâs not unusual.â
Jasper was taken aback by Jonahâs nonchalant attitude.
Jonah added, âI have no idea where she went. Sheâs an adult. She doesnât have to report her whereabouts.
You know, she once cut off contact with her family because of you.â
âShe cut off contact because of me? Why?â Jasper was surprised.
Jonah quickly changed the topic after the slip of the tongue. âWhy are you looking for her? Is it because your head hurts?â
âNo. Iâm just worried about her.â
âDonât worry. She knows how to keep herself safe and protect her best interests. Sheâll show up when she wants to talk to you. The only possibility right now is that she doesnât want to see you.â
Upon hearing that, Jasper felt a stabbing pain in his heart. The pain spread through his body. He looked after hanging up, and his palms grew sweaty.
Still, he was moved by Jonahâs words just now. He shared a similar experience with Alyssa, which was to cut off contact with family for a few years.
He couldnât help but wonder what she had been up to during those years of no contact Why had she not shared the story with him before?
After entering the racecourse, Jameson still refused to let go of Alyssaâs hand. She called him a few.
times. âJimmy? Jimmy? Jameson!â
He snapped back to reality. âHuh?â
She pursed her lips and glared at him before her eyes traveled to their hands.
Jameson sheepishly let go of her hand, saying, âSorry, Lyse. I was nervous just now.â
The air between them grew awkward. However, Alyssa decided to put on a serious face, refusing to act weird about the hand-holding, as they were both single adults, with her being a one-time divorcee it would be weirder if she fussed about the hand-holding She addressed him sternly, âWhy didnât you announce your identity to the guards? They wouldnât have misunderstood you, and you wouldnât have had to fight with them.â
âDid you really think theyâd let me in if I did that? he responded indifferently. âTheyâd only inform David about it, and Iâd still be denied entry. The outcome would be the same.â
Alyssa didnât probe further, as that would be crossing a line. As an outsider, she had no intention of meddling in the Schmidt siblingsâ infighting.
She asked, âJimmy, why did you bring me here? Is it for horseriding?â
Iâll show you a horse. I promise youâll love it.â
