A cup of warm milk was placed in front of her.
She looked at him and said, âI like chilled milk better.
â
But Leonel refused.
âToo much chilled drinks, and youâd get cramps on your period.
â
Alexis felt a little embarrassed talking about such a private matter in front of the servants, so she didnât argue and drank half glass of the warm milk before putting it aside.
ALL the while, Leonel watched her, pursing his lips slightly.
She had changed so much.
In the past, they usually spent the day with him listening to her talk about the cases she handled in the law firm.
Then at nighttime, they lay entangled, exploring each otherâs bodies between cool sheets.
She had never been this cold and distant.
After breakfast, Alexis sat in Leonelâs car.
Her ears were glued to her phone, and she kept talking to her clients on the way.
She was occupied the entire ride, and there had been no chance to talk to her.
After about half an hour, the car rolled to a stop in front of the Fowler family house.
Evelyn and Daniel were already waiting, their schoolbags on their backs.
The two children got inside the car.
Meanwhile, Leonel got out and greeted Waylen.
âThank you for taking care of the kids for us.
â
Standing in the morning light, Waylen looked handsome, his face retaining its youthfulness despite the passage of time.
He wiped away the morning dew that had settled on top of the car and smiled.
âRena and I are still strong.
We wouldnât have any problem taking care of the children.
You can let them stay here and we can take
them off your hands for a bit so you and Alexis can catch a break, but you refused.
Itâd be good for the two of you to spend some quiet time together.
Weâre family.
We can do at least this much.
â
Leonel smiled.
âThank you! Iâll bring them back for dinner this weekend.
â
Waylen gave him a pat on the shoulder.
âAlright.
And by the way, youâd better keep an eye on that new project.
Everyoneâs keeping their eyes on it and wanting a share.
You have to be prudent.
â
Leonel nodded.
âDonât worry, I will.
â
Raising his hand, he looked at his watch and said, âItâs time to go.
Otherwise, Evelyn will be angry with me again for making her late.
The bigger she gets, the more temperamental she becomes.
â
Waylen stepped back and let them leave.
Alexis rolled down the window and waved at her father.
âBye!â
That pulled a laugh from Waylen.
âWhy donât you get out of the car and give your old man a proper greeting? No wonder your daughter is so willful.
Turns out she takes after you.
â
Leonel got inside the car.
Leaning against him, Alexis winked at Waylen and said, âThatâs right.
â
Waylen urged them to leave at the show of public affection.
