Alexis chose not to clear the air.
If she had intended to embarrass Anika, she would have doused her with wine herself.
Leonel turned to Noreen, instructing, âTake her to the lounge and help her find another dress to wear.
â
Anika bit her lower lip and gratefully said, âThank you, Mr.
Douglas.
â
She gave Alexis a nod, putting on a friendly front.
Alexis had encountered numerous women Like Anika, all eager to advance socially, yet she remained unbothered.
With a slight smile, she commented, âPlaying the hero, arenât you, Mr.
Douglas?â
Leonel frowned, clearly annoyed.
âWhat are you talking about?â
He was about to clarify when several senior executives approached him, pulling him away to entertain some important guests.
Once he was gone, Alexis took a few steps closer to Anika, leaning in to whisper, âMiss Cohen, the scent of your perfume⦠Iâve noticed it on my husbandâs clothes, and that lipstick shade⦠Nice color, by the way!â
Anika felt her heart miss a beat.
Alexis had uncovered her secret.
Knowing that if Alexis asked her to leave, sheâd lose any chance of staying close to Leonelâ¦
Meanwhile, at the party, Leonel had indulged a bit too much.
Arriving home, he could barely walk straight.
Alexis assisted him upstairs.
He seemed cheerful.
As she tried to remove his shoes after getting him onto the bed, he rolled over and pinned her down, evidently in the mood for intimacy.
Gently placing her hand on his shoulder, Alexis whispered, âYouâve had too much to drink!â
His expression turned serious, and he suddenly seemed sober.
He looked at her intensely for a while, and then propped himself up against the bedâs headboard, scoffing, âYouâre making too much of this.
Do you really dislike me touching you that much? Today was supposed to be a good day for me.
Still, I nearly forgot that tomorrow marks his memorial.
Obviously, he means more to you than I do.
Why else would you resist my touch⦠Am I right, Alexis?â
âWhatâs the deal with that woman, Anika?â Alexis didnât beat around the bush.
Leonel didnât avoid the question.
With an indifferent tone, he replied, âIâve only seen her a few times through work.
Thatâs it! Why do you ask? Are you feeling jealous?â
Alexis looked down and said, âHer perfume, her lipstick shade, the identical dress.
Leonel, she was with you that night, wasnât she?â
Leonelâs expression turned frosty.
Suddenly, he tenderly grasped her chin, his tone rapid, filled with urgency and a hint of severity.
âI was drunk and thought she was you.
Besides, nothing happened between us.
Why do you hold it against me? You donât love me and constantly pine for another.
Do you even consider how that makes me feel? If it bothers me at all?â
Alexis pushed him away, asserting, âLeonel, this is different!â
âIn what way is it different?â
He pinned her down on the bed aggressively, his look fierce as though he was about to explode.
âExplain to me, how is it different? Calvin and you never got together? Youâre telling me you both acted like complete virgins? Do you actually believe that bullshit? You expect me to think nothing happened between you two in Braseovell? Just a man and a woman, alone in that house⦠Seriously? Nothing at all? Youâve never been with him?â
Alexis slapped Leonel right across his face.
