âWhat is wrong with her?!â Fear was a new experience for me. Seeing my mate lying there, hardly breathing, pale as death, the fear monster clutched at my heart, digging its claws in deep. I touched her cold face, rubbed her hands, willing her to open her eyes.
âYour Majesty, please give me some space to examine the queen.â The healer pushed me out of her way.
I was too concerned to reprimand her for daring to touch me. Rage whined in my head, calling for Tasha but she too was disturbingly quiet. There was so much blood. It just kept flowing out from between her thighs. Did I do this? Did I hurt her?
Pacing the floor, tearing at my hair, I couldnât think what I could have done to hurt her like that. She was fine a few minutes ago. We were having breakfast and thenâ¦.
Poison!
âHealer! She was poisoned.â I grabbed the womanâs arm.
She looked up at me frowning. âWhat makes you say that your Majesty? To me it seems she had a miscarriage.â
Miscarriage? The words shocked me to the core. The strength left my legs, and I sagged down onto the bed next
I to my pale
mate.
âYes, Iâm sorry. But she is young and strong. Bedrest and plenty of fluids. She will make a full recovery in a few weeks.â Healer Gwyneth patted my hand. âDonât lose hope, Sire. She will conceive again.â
A movement at the open door caught my attention.
âYour Majesty is everything⦠Oh, Heaven!â Rhonaâs hands flew to her mouth. âWhat happened?â She rushed to Raineâs side.â
I couldnât answer her.
âHelp me clean her up, girl. Your Majesty, please leave. We need some privacy.â Healer Gwyneth put her hand on my shoulder, and I turned my eyes to her. âPlease. Iâll call you once weâve made her comfortable.â

I got up and pulled my robe closed. My legs took me to my office. The black rose, the funeral dirge and now this. A miscarriage? This was too much of a coincidence.
rushed back to the bedroom when Healer Gwyneth linked me. Raine was sleeping deeply. Softly I touched her hand and it felt warmer. Fear still had a tight grip on my gut, but at least some color had returned to her cheeks. Her wolf was healing her.
âMake sure that she stays in bed, your Majesty. I will come back tonight to see how she is.â Healer Gwyneth bowed to me and left us alone.
Rhona had tears in her eyes when she looked at me. âI wonât say anything, Sire. This is awful. My poor lady.â
âI appreciate it. No one must know about this.â I stopped her from taking the tray with the remains of the breakfast. âRhona, what tea is this?â That was the only thing only Raine had. I detest tea.
Rhona took a sniff at the tea and frowned. âWhy, this is the tea you had ordered the healer to make for her Majesty.â
âMe?â I did no such thing. âOur healer made this?â
Rhona clutched at her throat, grey eyes wide with fear. âYou think Healer Gwyneth had something to do with this? But why?â
I didnât answer. But I would get to the bottom of this, and whoever was responsible for this, for my mate losing our baby, oh, by the g ods, they will pay.
I
âStay here with her. I have something urgent to deal with.â I placed a kiss on Raineâs forehead and went inside. my dressing room to change. I was about to pay a visit to the boy in the tower.
On my way to the tower, my trusted bodyguards in tow, I linked Ross and Lord Grayson to meet me there.
âStay.â I dismissed the guards at the door. Ross and Grayson waited for me inside the tower room.
âHeâs still not talking, your Majesty.â Ross pulled the young wolfâs bruised face up by his hair.

I was impressed by the defiant look in the pupâs eyes. For a moment.
âNone of the others know whose pack he is from, apparently. They fear retaliation, Sire.â Lord Grayson wiped his hands on the captiveâs shirt.
âI will break him!â Rage roared, staring at the boy from my eyes.
I will handle it, I told him. âBring him some food and water. Unchain him.â
âWhat?â Ross stared at me.
âI donât thinkâ¦â Lord Grayson began but I cut him short.
âI didnât ask you to think. I told you to get the boy food and water and unlock the chains!â I roared at them.
âIâll link the serva nts:..â Ross swallowed his word when he saw my face. âFine. Iâll get it.â
Lord Grayson unlocked the chains and the boy fell down at our feet. He kept his head down.
âYou can go, Lord Grayson.â I wanted no arguments.
The boy sat on the floor keeping his arms locked around his knees, silent.
âWhich pack are you from, boy?â I looked at the various torture instruments hanging on the stone wall. Floggers,
kare sp iked whips, silver daggers, their hilts bound by leather straps. Silver was our kryptonite. Burned like hell and could kill a werewolf if used correctly. I didnât need any of those instruments.
âHmm⦠Not talking. I wonât lie to you, son. Youâre going to be executed for treason. So, consider this your last meal.â I stopped in front of him. âButâ¦â I waited for him to look up at me. âI will consider a pardon if you tell me who put you up to this.â
âThey will kill me.â His voice was hardly above a whisper.
I chuckled, âAnd you are more afraid of âthemâ than your king?â
âYou are not the rightful king. You are a monster. You donât care about the werewolves.â He stood were shaking.
I admired courage and the boy had that; I gave him that. âIs that in your opinion?â

âOur people are dying of hunger and poverty while you live in luxury, taking our hard-earned money to fill your
coffers.â He spat at my feet.
That was news to me, I folded my arms across my chest watching the boy with renewed interest.

âAnd you send your warriors to ransack our homes if we donât pay.â He glowered at me with contempt written on his bruised face. âForcing us to watch your elaborate feast while we are struggling to put food on our table. We hate you.â
I saw his eyes flit to the silver daggers hanging on the wall just as the door opened and Ross came in with his food and water.
He sprang to grab one, but I was faster. I pinned him to the wall by his neck, lifting him up to have him face me. His feet dangled in the air.
Ross threw down the plate of food and rushed towards us.
âIâve got it under control!â I snarled at him, and he backed off. âLook at me, boy! What you have told me, I have no knowledge about it.â I threw him down. âLock him in the dungeon. I am not done with him yet.â
