âBut why take her to the orphanage, Ross? Wouldnât she be safer here in the castle?â Maybe it was guilt that made me feel so connected to the infant.
âAs per the kingâs orders, Raine.â My name flowed effortlessly from his tongue when we were alone, and his eyes were no longer as cold when he looked at me. Ross was a few years older than Amaris, but still a dangerously handsome man, there was no denying it.
It felt easier to talk to him, we were still far from friends, but I felt he could be trusted.
âWell, then you have to take me to check on her.â I said and touched his arm.
âI donât think you need to concern yourself withâ¦â
âWhat are you two discussing so intimately?â Amaris called out to us where we stood in front of his office.
I went to wrap my arms around his waist. âI was just asking Ross to take me to the orphanage to check on the infant.â
âWhy not ask me?â Did I imagine it, or did he sound aggrieved?
I looked up at the pensive frown knitting his dark brows together. Reaching up, I stroked the deep line there. âYou had other pressing matters, my king.â
The smile he offered was barely there.
âRaine, please excuse Beta Ross and I, we have some matter to discuss. Wait for me in the salon. Iâll meet you there.â Amaris said before he kissed me with a hard, possessiveness that made my head spin.
They went into his office and Ross closed the door. I knew it was frowned upon to eavesdrop, but how else was
I supposed to know what Amaris had planned? So, I stayed just outside the door, barely breathing.

âI do not want you to spend so much time with Raine.â I heard Amaris say, his voice cold as the ice melting on the Black Mountains.
Ross stayed silent for a few seconds. I could imagine him being just as surprised as I was.
âAmaris? What brought this about?â I heard Ross moving about. âIs this because of what happened with the Luna? I already told youâ¦â
âNo, I donât want to subject Raine to unnecessary gossip.â
What? Gossip!
Ross laughed harshly, âAre you f ucking joking? You pushed me to instruct your queèn, be her shadow, now you come to me with this nonsense. I am a mated wolf!â His tone rose with his indignation.
âEven mated wolves have been known to succumb to an Omegaâs allure.â I stood listening to the two of them, my hand to my mouth. My mate was jealous. No one has ever been jealous of me before. I smiled to myself. Amaris was possessive and it was to be expected, but he had no need to feel insecure. He was the only one for me.
âYouâre jealous! For the love of the Goddess, Amaris! I am your friend, probably the only one you have.â
âThen let us keep it that way. I will assign another security detail to her, and she will be chaperoned at all times when dealing with you.â
âAs you wish, your Majesty! I believe I have work to do.â I heard Ross coming to the door and fled to the salon.
I pretended to read through a book while I waited for Amaris.
âSomeone must have said something to him to make him react this way, Raine.â Tasha stretched herself lazily at the back of my mind. âBut I think I like it.â I did too. It made me feel wanted and special.
âBut too much jealously can be dangerous though. She had to say that and burst my bubble. I didnât want him to lose a friend over me.

âRoss doesnât think of me in that way. I saw his mate. She is young and beautiful.â I tried to soothe Tasha.
Rhona came into the salon with tea and sandwiches. âYour Majesty, some refreshment.â She peered over her shoulder when she sat the tray down onto the table. âMay I speak freely?â she lowered her
voice.
âOf course.â I patted the couch next to me and she sat down.
âWhat happened with his Majesty? I saw Beta Ross come out of his office and he was in such a foul temper.â
âReally?â I feigned ignorance. I took Rossâ advice to heart. Listen more than talk.
âYes,â Rhona said. âHe even pushed one of the guards out of his way, running down the stairs.â
âIâm sure itâs nothing.â I took one of the sandwiches and nibbled on it.
Rhona looked at me in a side-long glance. âMaybe, but word has it that you and Beta Ross have been seen quite a lot alone together.â
I glared at Rhona and her cheeks pinked up. âIâm sorry, I donât mean to offend you, your Majesty.â
âThere is nothing going on between Beta Ross and myself other than he is guarding and instructing me. At the kingâs orders.â
âOf course, Iâm just saying.â Her ears reddened even more.
âWell, if you hear such nonsense, I want you to report it directly to me and not to anyone else. Do not spread gossip, Rhona.â
âSo, the tongues are wagging.â Amaris was like a ghost, appearing when you least expected him, soundless and scentless. I wondered how he did it, conceal his scent like that. It was scary.
Rhona went from pink to pale in a heartbeat. âYour Majestyâ¦â she bowed and was hastily planning her retreat, but Amaris stopped her.
âOne minute, Rhona.â His hand landed on her shoulder. âI want you to do something for me.â

The way she looked at him, a mixture of fear and adoration and I had the strangest sensation wash over me. I felt like gouging her eyes out for looking at him like that.
âAnything, your Majesty.â
âOh, anything, your Majesty. Iâd bet sheâd spread her legs for him if he asked her to. Probably did, in the past.â Tasha sneered inside my head. I shushed her at once.
Amaris smiled at her. Smiled. I didnât like it.
âI want you to be by your queenâs side whenever she is around Beta Ross or any other male for that matter.â His hand was still on her shoulder, and she was fawning over him.
âDo you not trust me?â The words just spilled out of my mouth before I had a chance to soften them.
Our eyes clashed over the distance, and he was quick to close it, taking my hands in his and pulling me up.
âI trust you implicitly, my sweet. But I will not stand by and have your reputation and honor be sullied by gossip.â He kissed my fingers. He meant well, but I wondered if it wouldnât have the opposite effect.
But I bit my tongue. âYou are so kind, my love.â I smiled at him, but my eyes searched for Rhona where she stood at a respectful distance, watching us.
âI have to go to the mines, Raine.â Amaris traced small circles around my navel making my lower abdominal muscles contract under his light touch. âWill you go with me?â
We spent the entire afternoon making love after Rhona left us quietly, starting in the salon and ended up in our bed.
âAre you sure?â I let my fingers tousle his already messy hair as he placed small kisses on my stomach, moving downwards. He had me so many times, but still I wanted more. Could filling me up and bringing me to extasy until it felt that I would die from the pleasure of it.

folds making me arch my back and pant with expectation, âI am the only man I can trust with you.â
âYou are the only one I love, Amaris.â I sighed in contentment as he gripped my hips to enter me once
more.
âThere will be no one else, Raine. You are mine and only mine.â His wolf shone through his eyes,
watching our coupling and I knew this was the moment. The moment our pup came into being.
