Chapter 55
RAINE
The elders requested to see me, concerned about my wellâbeing. They werenât, of course. They were worried about Amaris and so was I. Sorin and Helen followed them into the office, cramping the space although it was large room.
âDear Raine, we were so worried about you.â Helen gushed, making her way through the gathering of elders. âAre y
you alright.â Her belly had grown since last I saw her. Was I gone that long?
If I didnât know better, I would swear she was genuinely concerned the way she hurried over to me and took my hand.
âI am fine, as you can see.â I offered her a smile. But I was far from fine. I needed my mate, and I was tired to the bone.
âIt was horrible. Amaris lost his mind when he couldnât find you.â Helen said, but stopped short when Sorin pulled her back.
âGlad to see you are in good health.â Sorin regarded me with cold blue eyes. âWhich is more than I can
say for the king. Where is my brother, Raine?â The accusatory look in his narrowed eyes didnât escape
Elder Mattias stepped forward to speak on my behalf. âYour Highness, the queen has been through an ordeal, maybe we shouldnâtâ¦.â
âI am in charge during my brotherâs absence, and I have every right to know what happened to him.â Sorin turned to the older man who had no choice but to submit to him. âAmaris wasnât in his right mind to make any rash and suicidal decisions and look what mess heâs gotten this kingdom into!â
âHe couldnât get to the portal in time, Sorin. He is still in the Vampire Realm.â I met his cold stare, trying my best to not let him see how afraid I was for Amaris.
âAlone? Then we may as well assume he is dead!â Sorin banged his fist on the desk. âI should have Ross executed for this and that witch he brought here.â

âNo!â I rose from the chair. I wouldnât stand for it. Ross was my only chance of getting Amaris back. âRoss followed his kingâs orders.â I stepped in front of him, I felt Tasha stirring beneath my skin. âIf you have any love for your brother as you claim, you have to send warriors in to find him, Sorin. Amaris wonât give up without a fight. I refuse to believe that he wonât make it.â
âThen you are a fool!â Sorin screamed in my face. âHe doesnât stand a chance against a horde of vampires! Besides, we canât send warriors into the Vampire Realm without violating the peace treaty.â
âDamn the peace treaty! Theyâve already broken it by capturing me, Sorin!â I screamed back at him. He was going to leave his brother to the mercy of the vampires. Maybe he wanted that all along. Our eyes clashed like blades. I wasnât about to back down.
âHer Majesty has a point.â Elder Jonas interjected. âWe have to act now.â
Without breaking our staring contest, Sorin said, âI still have the final say in this, and you should do well to remember that.â He turned on his heel and marched out of the office with Helen following.
A wave of dizziness overcame me and made me sink down into the chair.
âYou need to rest, your Majesty. We will speak to Lord Greyson and Beta Ross to arrange a plan of infiltration.â Elder Mattias said, âDo not fear, we will not leave our king unaided.â
I had no strength left to speak so I just nodded, dismissing them. Rhona hurried back into the office to kneel by my side.
âMilady, youâre pale. Come, let me help you to your bed.â
I let Rhona and the others faff over me, bringing me food which I had no appetite for, trying to entertain me with the latest gossip which didnât interest me, but I let them be. They were doing their best to distract me from worrying over Amaris. Without success because he was all I thought about.
Tried to sleep, but as soon as my eyes closed and I drifted away, I saw Athanâs hawklike face and felt his hands invading my body. There was no peace in sleep for me. I sat up screaming. Rhona was at my side in a flash.

âMilady! What happened?â She mopped my sweaty brow with a damp cloth. âYou scared me.â
âJust a bad dream, itâs nothing.â I tried to convince myself. Would I ever be rid of the bad thoughts he planted in my brain? âIs the witch still here at the castle? I would like to see her if itâs possible.â
âMilady, His Highness ordered her to go home.â Rhona looked pained. âBut I can try to get her back. She has yet to be compensated for getting you back.â she said, her eyes widening. âWitches can be very dangerous if theyâre not paid whatâs owed to them.â
Damn Sorin!
âThen you must try, Rhona. I need her to help me.â I was prepared to do anything to get to Amaris.
Rhona agreed. âI will. She is friends with my mother. I will visit her tonight.â
A knock at the door and when Rhona went to open it, Sorin pushed her to the side and stormed into bedroom.
my
âSorin!â I pulled the covers to my chin.
âYour Highness, you canât be in here.â Rhona tried to stop him, but he shoved her out of his way.
âGet out, girl!â
She had no choice but to obey.
âThis is inappropriate. You canât just burst in here like this.â I tried my best to sound indignant, but the truth was, I was terrified.
âReally. Youâve been gone for what â a week now? Alone in the Vampire Kingâs castle with no one to defend your honor.â He sneered and ripped away the covers. âAre you pregnant? The moment I saw you, I noticed your scent has changed.â
I didnât trust the way he looked at me. I posed a threat to his claim to the throne being pregnant with the rightful heir. There was
no one to help me if he should try to kill me.
âSorinâ¦â I hated that my voice sounded shaky.

âItâs Athanâs, isnât it? Tell me, Raine, how you managed to come back unscathed?â His smile was nothing but predatory. âThat vampire wouldnât pass up the opportunity to suck you dry. Unless he had another use for you.â
The humiliation made me cringe back against the headboard. I felt as helpless as I did when I was bullied by the other wolves of my pack. Tears forced their way out of my eyes. My hands gripped the sheets, bracing myself for what he planned to do to me.
He lowered his voice as he loomed over me. âTell me, did you like it when he you?â
âYour Highness, I suggest you leave the queenâs chambers immediately.â Rossâ voice lashed out at Sorin.
Sorin turned around to approach Ross with his head held high. He looked down his long nose at Ross. âWell, if it isnât the queenâs lapdog⦠Careful, Ross, you look like a jealous lover.â He shouldered past Ross. âWeâll talk more about this later, Raine.â
