Ross stood at the door not daring to come into the bedroom further. I noticed his balled fists, his tight jaw as he fought to control his anger. Whether his anger was directed at me or at Sorin, I had no idea. But then he turned his dark eyes to me, and I saw them soften.

“Don’t let him get to you, Raine.” his voice was strangely gruff, “I’ll make sure he won’t enter your suite again.”

“Th…thank you…” I choked back the sob that threatened to force its way out of my throat. If only Amaris was here. I needed to feel his arms around me. There was nothing I needed more than to be with my mate, I would only feel safe in his presence.

The way Ross looked at me was as if he were having an internal struggle, shifting on his feet, his mouth opening and closing. Then he slapped his hand against the doorpost and called out to Rhona. She hurried into the bedroom, eyes wide with fright.

“Look after her.” he said, turned and rushed out.

“Milady, I was so worried.” She knelt beside the bed, “I’m so sorry, I had no choice but to obey him.”

“Please, Rhona. I understand.” I wiped my face with the cover and pulled it up over me.

She got up and sat at the foot end of the bed. “I couldn’t help to overhear what he said, Milady.” She looked down at her hands in her lap. “Is it true? Did the Vampire King do something to you?”

Did he rape me? He wanted Amaris to believe that he did. I wanted to believe that he didn’t, but! couldn’t shake the thoughts that ran through my mind, his touch. Had it been a dream, was it all in my mind–thoughts that he planted there?

“I… I don’t know, Rhona.” I burst into tears, with my hands covering my face. I felt ashamed, confused, disgusted.

“It’s alright, Milady. I won’t breathe a word about this. I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about. This pup is His Majesty’s. I have no doubt.”

I pulled away from her, slightly embarrassed. “I just wish I could be sure.”

“There might be a way.” She looked at me thoughtfully. “Joanna would be able to help.”

“Speaking of…” I got out of bed and went to my closet. “You have to take me to her. She has to help us get the king back.”

“Your Majesty, you can’t go back…”

I stopped her. “I don’t plan to go back. I just need to know he’s alive, Rhona. I know Ross and Lord Greyson is making plans, but I can’t sit here and do nothing.”

There was a soft knock at the door and Lilly and Sarah entered, and greeted me, bowing respectfully.

“Why are there guards outside in the hallway? We had a hard time getting past.” Sarah asked Rhona.

Must have been guards posted by Ross to keep unwanted princes out. Rhona and I exchanged a knowing glance.

“Don’t worry about it.” Rhona told her. She bit her lower lip thoughtfully, looking at Lily. “Take off your clothes.”

“What?!” Lily gaped at her.

Lily and I were of the same build. “Exchange clothes with me. We’ll explain everything.” I smiled at Rhona.

Half an hour later, in Lily’s uniform, my hair hidden underneath her cap, Rhona, Sarah and I walked past the guards.

“Please see no one disturbs Her Majesty. She is sleeping and needs her rest.” Rhona told the guards who just grunted a reply without paying attention to us.

‘Just keep your head down, Milady.’ Rhona advised me through our link. We were outside, leaving Sarah behind in the castle.

We walked through the gates without anyone taking a second glance at us.

“My mother lives at the edge of the forest. We have to pass through the castle territory. Just keep calm and don’t look at the guards.” She walked briskly and I had to lengthen my steps to keep up with her. She realized that I was having trouble walking so fast and she slowed down somewhat. “I’m sorry I’m walking too fast. Are you alright?”

“Yes, don’t worry about me.” I found it strange that it took so long to recover from whatever it was that Athan subjected me to. Maybe the wolfsbane hadn’t completely left my body.

At the edge of the western border, we were stopped by one of the patrol guards, a robust blonde male, who blocked our way.

“Where you two off to?” He looked at Rhona as if she was a piece of steak and he was starving. I kept my head down but noticed his hand closing in on her arm.

I was getting nervous. The blonde obviously wanted something from Rhona and it wasn’t a conversation. The scent of his arousal hit my nostrils. It was plain they knew each other intimately.

“Look, I’ll see you tonight, Gareth.” Rhona leaned closer to him. Thank the goddess he was so into her; 1 could have been a tree for all he cared.

Rhona smiled seductively at him and ran her fingers lightly down his arm. “Sure.”

What seemed like forever he let us pass, his eyes following us as we made our way down the mountain path.

“So, Gareth?” I couldn’t help but giggle watching her cheeks getting flushed.

She waved my remark away with her hand. “We sometimes see each other. Nothing serious.”

“Not according to him though.” I laughed. Rhona had a sparkle in her eyes that told me more than what she was willing to admit.

The day had turned to dusk when we exited the forest on our way to Joanna’s house. I was exhausted by the time we reached the small, wooden hut that was almost hidden away between giant fir trees. Wild ivy and moss creeping up its walls camouflaged the small abode even more.

Before Rhona could knock at the door, it swung open and a voice called out to us, “Come in. I’ve been expecting you, Queen Raine.”
