The first golden rays of the rising sun had scarcely broken through the firs and swirling mists, when the tramping of boots sent the forest creatures scurrying for safety. True to Joannaâs orders, the warriors led by Lord Grayson arrived.
Despite spending a sleepless night in Joannaâs overcrowded bedroom, Iâve never felt this awake, filled with nervous energy that no amount of caffeine could top. The three of us waited outside with Ross and the other guards, our breaths mingling with the mists in the cold morning air.
The warriors joined the rest of the guards and filled the clearing in front of Joannaâs hut. I estimated about a hundred men.
âYour Majesty, ladies.â Lord Greyson greeted us, purposely omitting to greet his sonâinâlaw.
âRight on time, Lord Greyson.â Joanna smiled at the surlyâlooking man. âWe are ready.â She held her black crystal ball and the small blade in her hands. âMy coven sisters will link with me as soon as we locate King Amarisâ position.â
Lord Greyson drummed his fingers on his thighs. The deep groove between his brows only seemed to get deeper. âGet on with it then. Prince Sorin is much displeased with me, and I fear he might retaliate.â
I sighed inwardly. Of course, he would try to stop us. He didnât want his brother back. Ross glanced at me out of the corner of his eye but looked away when he saw Iâd noticed.
âThen we have to hurry.â I said and held out my hand to Joanna to let her cut my finger.
Again, the blood seemed to be absorbed into the black crystal before turning opaque and then gradually becoming clearer.
âLook closely, Raine. Concentrate on the one you love.â I heard Joannaâs melodic voice droning in my head. I felt her grip my hand firmly as I gazed into the clear ball.
At first all I saw was darkness. Fear took an icy hold of my heart. Why canât I see him? Where is he? As if

she sensed my panic, I heard Joannaâs voice, âDonât be afraid. Itâs the darkness trying to push you out. Push back, Raine. You can do it.â
I felt the energy building up deep inside me and I took a deep breath and let it flow through me. It ran like a current, flooding through my body and into Joannaâs. Then I saw him, or rather, both of them. Amaris and Athan. They were fighting. To the death!
I gasped, pulling back. Joannaâs grip on my hand became painful. âConcentrate! Do not withdraw.â She held out her right hand and a pulse of white light shot out from it, grew and grew until it swirled around like a maelstrom, wider and wider. âGo now!â Joanna shouted to the warriors who hurried towards the portal.
I focused back onto the vision in the ball, watching my mate being torn apart by the Vampire King.
AMARIS
We circled each other like the predators we were, never breaking eye contact. Weâve been fighting for hours and both of us breathed heavily.
âGive it up, Amaris. Let me take over!â Rage roared in my head, but I stubbornly refused. This was personal. I wanted to rip him limb from limb.
âGetting tired, Wolf?â He chuckled, wiping the blood from his lips. Heâd got me good, the bastard, took a chunk out of my shoulder. âYour blood isnât as tasty as hers.â
âMy blood is the last thing youâll ever taste again, Bloodsucker.â I clamped down on the wound with my left hand. Blood seeped through my fingers. I heard Athanâs unholy horde hissing from the shadows, hungry for my blood.
âLet me out or I will force you! Youâre wasting my energy trying to heal you, stupid Human.â I guess he had a point. He would make it hurt if he forced his way out. I let him have his way.
A growling black wolf pawed the floor where stood moments ago, ready to attack.
âAnd here I thought we were going to have a fair fight.â Athan sighed, âWell, have it your way then.â

Within seconds a thick fog surrounded him, swallowing him entirely.

***Where the hell is he?â Rage snarled, shifting uneasily. A sharp burn in Rageâs flank. Athanâs echoing
laughter. Silver. Heâd used the silver dagger. Sonofabitch!
âYouâre no match for me, Amaris. Admit it.â He materialized a few meters away.
Rage gathered himself. He launched himself at Athan. Gone. The instant our body hurtled through the air. Jarring pain as our body smacked into a marble pillar. Winded and confused he lay gasping for breath while the vampire chuckled gleefully at our misfortune.
âStop attacking him!â I screamed at Rage. âWait for him to come to us.â
Rage rose groggily to his paws and shook his large head. Athan attacked. A flash of silver came for Rageâs heart.
Our bodies collided and my wolf slipped on the stone floor. The blade scraped across his back. Snarling victoriously, Rageâs jaws snapped shut on Athanâs thigh. The vampire screamed â a highâpitched angry squeal.
Rage was not letting go. Athan slashed his neck with the blade, relentlessly. It burned like hell, but Rage kept on biting down. Only a matter of time for him to slice through the carotidâ¦
For a brief second our eyes met. Mutual hatred etched on our faces. His wrist snapped like a dried twig. The blade clanged onto the stone floor. I kicked it away. Athan hissed painfully, pressing his broken wrist against his mauled thigh in an attempt to stop the bleeding. I was about to break more than his wrist.

Advancing on him as he backpedaled against the floor to get away from me. âIâve got you now, Bloodsucker.â
âDonât be so certain, Wolf.â He hissed at me, showing me a mouthful of razorâsharp fangs.
I should have expected it. His leeches rushed to his rescue, attacking me from all angles. But they were

At first it was as if the air around us vibrated. Then there was a sound, like a roaring wind and the stone. walls disappeared, leaving a gaping hole through which Ross, Lord Greyson and my warriors walked in.
I snapped the leechâs neck that tried to latch onto me, grinning at my wolves. âTook you long enough.â I told them.
