When I turned back to Athan, he was gone, disappeared like the insubstantial creature he was.
âOpen those doors! The other males are out there. We need to get the females and get the out of here.â I shouted orders, running, searching for the damn vampire. I was far from finished with him. He had to be somewhere in the castle.
âYour Majesty!â Lord Greyson shouted, âYou need to get back to the kingdom! Weâll deal with this.â He cracked two leechesâ skulls together, turning them to dust.
âIâm not leaving until I get Athan!â I planned to take him with me and watch him burn in the sun. I kicked open one of the doors sending it crashing into the wall.
Ross grabbed my shoulder from behind. âRaine is out there in the forest alone with the witch. Go back! Sorin is on his way to try and stop her.â
What the hell? What was she doing there? â ! Then why did you leave her?â I shoved him from me. Torn between exacting my vengeance on the vampire and protecting my mate I wheeled around.
away âYou are supposed to protect her!â But I was angrier at myself for not being with her and having to rely on my Beta.
âShe is YOUR mate!â Ross snarled at me. As if I didnât know that.
My warriors tore down the doors to let the captive male.
first to storm into the hall. It was good to see most of them survived. It lessened my guilt somewhat.
I slapped a hand on his shoulder. âGlad you made it. The warriors will help you find the females.â I had to go back.
âWhat? Youâre leaving us to finish what you started?â Vincent refused to make it easier for me.
âMy queen needs me.â But so do they.

âAnd your subjects need you more! That is, if you want to earn their respect back.â Vincent held onto my arm, his grey eyes serious.
Goddammit! He was right. I grabbed Ross by his lapels. âThis is an order. Go back. Protect the queen. At all costs. Do you hear me!â I let the full force of my aura wash over him. This killed me, but I had to do it. It was my duty to protect my subjects.
Rage huffed at the back of my mind he was as conflicted as I was, maybe even more so, aching to be with our mate.
Ross submitted as he should, albeit reluctantly, and took some of the warriors back into the portal. I only hoped Raine would understand and forgive me. âLetâs go!â I turned to the others and together we rushed through the corridors to find the females.
RAINE
Someone was coming through the portal. I let go of Joannaâs hand to run towards the portal. It had to be him. Please let it be him. But my hope was crushed. Instead of Amaris, Ross and a handful of warriors stepped out of it.
âNoâ¦â My knees gave in, and I sank to the forest floor. Did this mean he didnât make it? Ross lifted me up and I fell against his chest.
âRaine, he ordered me back for your protection.â He lifted my chin to look at him. âHeâs saving the rest of the captives.â
My eyes welled with tears, blurring my vision.
âHeâll come back. You need to be strong.â His dark eyes softened when he searched my face.
I didnât want to be strong. I needed Amaris, needed my mate. The longing I felt for him was too much for me to take. There was a hollow, an empty feeling inside my chest, like my heart had been ripped from it.
âHeâd better hurry. I donât know how much longer we can keep the portal open.â Joannaâs voice sounded strained.

I wasnât about to lose him again. âThen I must go to him, Ross.â I pushed myself away from his strong

arms, adamant to walk into that portal to find my king.
But Ross ripped me away. âNo, no, Raine! Heâll punish both of us if you do.â His hands on my shoulders burned through my clothes. âPlease stay.â
I didnât believe him. Amaris would never hurt me. âHe wonât punish me.â
âAmaris needs us.â For once Tasha was in agreement with me. She had been strangely quiet since weâve been back.
âAmaris doesnât tolerate disobedience. You donât know him like I do.â
âYou have to stay. We need your power, Your Majesty.â Joanna held out her hands.
âWhat power! I donât have powers!â Anger, frustration, desperation and heartache, all those emotions surged through me as I screamed those words. Ross staggered away from me. The warriors looked at me as if I had grown horns. I looked at Joanna and Rhona. The latter held her hands up to her mouth and there was a smile of triumph on Joannaâs face.
A flurry of leaves scuttled at my feet, rose up and went flying around me. Was I doing that? Oh, my Goddess⦠thatâs impossible! I was just an ordinary Omega. This wasnât supposed to happen.
âHow do I stop this?â I was panicking because the wind started to get stronger, whipping the trees to a frenzy.
Ross tried to reach me, but the wind pushed him away. He tumbled to the ground and his men helped him up.
âCalm down, Raine. Your emotions are fueling your power. You have to learn to control it.â Joanna yelled over the roar of the wind. It was lifting me off my feet.
âHelp her!â Ross shouted.
âClose your eyes. Think of your pup. Ground yourself.â Joanna tried to move closer to me.
I was scared. âWhy is this happening?â

âIs the queen a witch?â I heard one of the warriors ask. Ross turned on him and struck him dow

âHold your tongue or I will rip it from your mouth. Never speak of this again.â he snarled and scoured the rest of them with his glaring gaze. âOne of you mentions this to anyone and I will see to it that you are severally punished. Got it?â
I did what Joanna suggested and focused on my baby, concentrating on the love I feel for it, and the wind started to die down.
As soon as my feet touched the ground Rhona came running to me to clasp her arms around me. âGoddess, you scared me, Milady.â
I glanced back at the portal. Thankfully, it was still open. I gently removed Rhonaâs arms from my waist and before Ross or anyone could react, I ran as fast I could into the portal.
