I moved to Amarisâ side although I was still bristling with hurt and anger at the way he spoke to me. But he needed me to join him, to show solidarity â especially with Sorin present.
âNice outfit, Raine. Suits you.â Sorin bowed ironically. He was referring to my maidâs uniform, of course.
I bit back a reply, but Amaris pulled me in underneath his armpit, close to his heart where I belonged.
âShe could wear a sackcloth and still be more regal than some of us.â Amaris said and his words salved my wounded ego slightly. I looked up at his face where the deep furrows between his dark brows and the lines around his mouth still bore witness to his anger of earlier.
But his eyes shone with intensity of his desire when he glanced down at me and sent little shivers up and down my spine. No matter what, he loved and wanted me. Our souls were inseparable.
Sorin lifted his lip in a sardonic sneer, looking directly at me. âWell, Iâm sure youâre in a hurry to get back to the castle. I shall not keep you then.â He sauntered over to where Ross was taking charge of the refugees. âTake them to the banquet hall and see that they are fed and clothed.â His whole demeanor spoke of his superiority, the way he looked down his nose at Ross, puffed out his chest. Ross wasnât easily intimidated.
âI have my instructions, Prince Sorin.â Ross replied calmly, âKing Amaris already gave me the orders. Now if youâll excuse us.â He motioned to the group to follow him, shouldering past Sorin.
âCareful, Beta Ross. Youâre walking a thin line with me.â Sorin snarled at him. âJust because youâre Amaris and his queenâs lapdog doesnât make you a royal.â He spoke in a lowered tone, but he might as well have shouted it out for it didnât escape our ears.
Ross kept on walking.
âBrother,â Amaris bit out the words, âdo I need to remind you of your place?â
The brothers glared at each other, Sorin defiantly refusing to submit until Amaris nudged his Alpha

â«âLord Greyson, the queen and I will be in our wing. See that we are not disturbed.â Amarisâ arm around my shoulder tightened and my heart sped up in anticipation. It felt good to have him this close again, taking in his musky male scent that released a thousand butterflies in my stomach.
âHeâs still angry. He might hurt us.â Tasha warned. But I shushed her. He was passionate, yes, and sometimes rough in his lovemaking, but he would never hurt me intentionally.
Would he?
âHe thinks the pup is Athanâs. Tasha whined again and I banished her to the back of my mind. I refused to believe that. Athan was lying. He got into my head, but I wonât let it happen again.
While the warriors led the way, marching a few yards ahead, with Ross and the others bringing up the rear, we walked back through the forest, hand in hand. It almost felt like we were a normal couple, taking a midâmorning stroll through the forest, enjoying the damp, mossy scent of the earth.
I noticed Amaris took deep breaths and looked up every so often to catch the dappled rays of sun glinting through the leaves.
âIâve missed this. The smells of life, of earth. The warmth.â He said when he saw me staring at him. âOut there in the Vampire Realm there were no scents except that of death and decay. And no sun either. Only shades of darkness.â
you were in the castle all along.â I had no idea what happened to him there. Howâ¦
I remembered looking out of the tower window seeing nothing but darkness, and I shivered. âI thought have to poison him against me? But the most important thing was that he was there with me, the rest time did Athan didnât matter. We would deal with whatever comes along.
âNo, I ended up in the dark, petrified forest thatâs where I found Vincent and the others. They called themselves the lucky ones.â He snorted out a laugh. âIâll tell you about it later. But we have more important things to discuss.â Dark eyes held promises of unbridled passion in the way he looked at me while his thumb caressed the back of my hand, gentle sensual strokes that made my breath quicken. A slow smile spread across his lips. He knew what was going through my mind.

He locked the bedroom door behind us. A heartbeat later I found myself caged against the wall and his hard body, my arms pinned above my head. Our heavy breaths mingling, chest heaving against each other.
âIâve missed you so much.â I whispered against his lips, so close and yet not close enough.
âHave you? Missed me?â He teased me with his tongue flicking over my lips, hungry eyes boring into mine. âTell me what you want, Raine.â
âYou, Amaris. I want you.â Every cell in my body screamed for his touch, needed to be close to him- to be inseparable.
âWhy are you so beautiful?â He growled next to my ear, taking the lobe in between his teeth. âI canât bear the thought of you in the arms of another being.â His body crushed mine into the wall, muscles shaking as he tried to restrain himself, everything about him tense and hard pressing into me.
âBut I am only yours, Amaris.â My heart dropped to my stomach. Did he not know that I cannot belong to any one else?
âYes. Mine.â His wolfâs guttural voice took over as he released my wrists to rip the clothes from my body. leaving me bare to his glowing eyes. He sucked at the mark on my shoulder, his sharp canines scraping over my sensitive skin, drawing a low moan from my lips. My desire flooded my , slicking my thighs.
Fear and excitement rushed through my veins when he hiked me up over his shoulder, carried me to our bed and threw me down. I reached for him not wanting to be separated, tugging at the shirt that strained across his broad chest, pulling him to me.
I lost myself in his arms, drowned in his , gave my everything to him, until there was nothing left but two bodies fused together trying to become one. He fell asleep tangled up in my arms and legs. I was spent but happy to have him in my arms again..
