Chapter 85
AMARIS
This has gone too far. I have reached the limit of my patience.
Ross came back into the cave. âNo sign of her. And the darkness has gone too. Definitely the work of witches.â
Joanna shook her head. âNo, no. Not witches. The shadow dragons.â She began coughing badly and I met Rhonaâs pleading
stare.
âRoss, take Joanna back to Healer Gwyneth.â She must survive. I needed her help to find Raine. âHurry.â
âWhat do we do now, Your Majesty?â Vincent asked me when I crawled out of the cave. The moon had defeated the darkness like Ross said and from its pale light I saw more disturbing sights. The surrounding area were scattered with bits of flesh and bone. What the hell happened there?
âDo you still want to be a part of this pack?â I wanted to do the ritual as soon as possible. As I looked at their individual faces, they all nodded in agreement. âGood. I need loyal fighters. Thereâs going to be a bloodbath.â

Returning to the castle I found Lord Greyson with a grim expression on his face. I fought the urge to groan. What could possibly have gone wrong now?
âThe prince and his mate are gone, Sire.â
âWhat do you mean theyâre gone? Gone where?â
âDisappeared into thin air! Weâve searched everywhere. The guards patrolling their wing were found dead.â
âThe council!â Rage roared at me. âTheyâre trying to save him from us.â

âThe council took Raine as well. Follow me.â I went to the stone circle to pick up my sword and the golden chalice. âWeâll celebrate your joining after we get the queen back.â I sliced open my palm and let the blood flow into the chalice swear loyalty to me, your king and Alpha.â
One by one they passed the cup between them and swore their oath. Soon after I felt the connection to them s place.
âWhat is your plan, Sire? We canât just storm in there and demand they release them, and we cannot leave the castle unprotected.â Lord Greyson was a strategist whereas I was more of a doer.
âIf you have a plan, Greyson, better be quick about it. Iâm done playing to the councilâs tunes. Theyâre demanding I step down or they will kill Raine.â Neither of the two was an option for me.

There was no time to rest. After a quick shower and grabbing something to eat on the way I hurried to Healer Gwynethâs clinic. Rhona remained at her motherâs bedside where she was being closely monitored hooked up to machines to help her breathe and pushing fluids into her. I was surprised to see Rhonaâs father present.
âHow is she?â I asked Gwyneth.
âSheâs holding on. Weâre doing what we can, Your Majesty.â She patted Rhonaâs back. âWeâll just have to wait.â
Rhonaâs father approached me. I didnât know him personally, but he tended the castle gardens beautifully. He bowed
respectfully. âI appreciate what you are trying to do, Your Majesty. Joanna and I have been carrying our secret for years. Now we can finally be together. I only hope itâs not too late for us.â
âYes, we can only hope. Rhona, a moment please.â There still a lot of explanations I needed.

âIâll call you if thereâs any change.â Gwyneth reassured her and she followed me out.

âMother told me they took her. The council, I mean. But I didnât see anything.â Rhona talked while we walked through the
and clinic gardens. âShe was screaming for Milady to run and then there was this force, like some giant hand picked me up threw me against the rocks. When I came to my senses my mother lay there looking like a broken doll.â The tears streamed down her face, âAnd Her Majesty was gone.â
âItâs alright, Rhona.â I put my arm around her shoulders, and she leaned into me, sobs racking her body.
âI promise you; weâll get her back.â That still didnât help me much. âWhat happened before that? I saw a lot of blood and guts everywhere spattered over the rocks and the trees.â
Rhona sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve. âWe were attacked by rogues. Her Majesty killed all of them. It was terrifying. She almost killed us in the process, but Mother helped her to stop.â
âHow? How did Raine manage to do that?â
âShe made them explode.â
The guards I sent to watch over her were ripped to pieces. I was convinced vampires did that but now I had second thoughts.

Lord Greyson had advised me to speak to the council before I did anything rash. I decided to humor him this once.
âRoss, organize a conference call with the council.â I burst into my office where Ross was busy reading through my emails.
âWhat? No charging into their building? Lord Greyson is already planning a siege as we speak.â He was being ironic. I didnât appreciate his dry humor.
âIâll get right on it, Your Majesty. What do you want to achieve by this? Do you think they will hand her over just like that?â
âNo, I donât. I want to reply to their message, Ross. They think they can manipulate me. I am not my brother.â
âGoing through.â He moved out of my seat, and I waited for the heads of council to appear on my laptop.
âWell, well, look who it is. Miss something?â Athanâs grinning face came into view. It had to be him.
I fought the urge to smash my fist into the screen.
âWhere is she? Show her to me.â I clutched the desk so hard my fingers left imprints into the wood.
âWould if I could, Amaris. But sadly, no. She is busy at the moment.â He swiped a finger over his lips. âI can s
He was trying to goad me. âYouâre a liar!â Goddess help me, he needs to die!
âDonât forget, Amaris. You owe me and you know my conditionsâ He sat back to grin at me.
âYou have no claim over her, Bloodsucker. Let me make this clear to you, I am coming for you and this time I will end y I snarled at his ugly mug.
âI see you
received our message, King Amaris.â Finn Pendragonâs haughty face filled the screen. âWeâll only deliver her when your brother is crowned.â The king of dragonsâ steepled his fingers together and peered at me over it.
âIf you have her, I demand to speak to her.â
Queen Elif, the queen of the Fae interjected. âYou are by no means in a position to demand anything, Amaris. Appear here at the council and we will discuss the terms of your surrender.â
How arrogant was she? âThe terms of myâ¦â I snorted out a laugh âWhere is my brother?â

âIn a safe place.â Pendragon answered. âYou have no other choice but to surrender. This isnât a fight you will win, Amaris.â
âDo not be so sure of yourself, Finn. I know you have that spineless brat hiding under your robes. Give him a message for me. I am coming for him.â
I snapped the laptop shut to end the call.
âSend word out to all the packs. Those who are with me must report by first light tomorrow. We march.â
