In the middle of November, without warning, Ilya got a new, unwanted teammate. Troy Barrett was definitely a talented forward, and a potential upgrade to Ilyaâs current linemate, Tanner Dillon, but heâd also always seemed like a total prick to Ilya.
âI hate this,â Ilya complained on the phone to Shane. âMy team was perfect. Now we have this asshole.â
âYour team is terrible,â Shane reminded him.
âYes, but, you know. The are good. Barrett has bad vibes.â
âI know. Sorry.â
âHarris was bringing the new team puppy to practice today! Now Barrett is there too. Ruins everything.â
âI still canât believe he called Kent out,â Shane said. âMaybe he isnât so bad?â
The reason Toronto had quickly traded Barrett to Ottawa for a few draft picksâfar less than the all-star player was worthâwas because Troy had gotten in a fight with his even shittier teammate, Dallas Kent. Kent, a homophobic bully and one of the most repulsive people Ilya had ever met, had recently been accused of rape and assault by numerous anonymous women online. Apparently that had been a bridge too far for his former best friend, Troy Barrett.
âYes, well. What is the saying about a broken clock? Wyatt says it.â
âItâs right twice a day.â
âYes. He is right about one thing. Probably still mostly bad.â
âMaybe heâll be a good linemate. Iâve been listening to you complain about Tanner Dillon for as long as youâve played for Ottawa.â
âI still donât want him.â
âI know. Iâm just trying to cheer you up.â Shane sighed heavily. âI have to go. Team meeting.â
âOkay. How is Buffalo?â
âAmazing,â Shane said flatly.
Ilya laughed. âGood luck tonight.â
âGood luck with Troy Barrett. I canât wait to hear all about him.â
âSo nosy.â
âI love you. Iâll call you after the game tonight.â
âI will be waiting. I love you too.â
They ended the call, and Ilya immediately texted Harris.
Ilya:Â You are bringing the puppy today yes?
Harris:Â Yup!
Ilya exhaled slowly. At least this day wouldnât be total garbage.
âSo how was he?â Shane asked. He was sprawled out on his hotel bed, completely exhausted after the game.
âSo cute, Shane. You should see him!â
âWhat?â Troy Barrett was an attractive man, sure, but that was an unexpected reaction from Ilya.
âHe licked my face with his little tongue!â
âUh.â
âHis ears are so floppy, and he is so soft. I wanted to carry him around all practice.â
Oh. âI meant , idiot. Not the puppy.â
Ilya huffed. âWho cares? Puppy was great. His name is Chiron. He is black and small andââ
âOkay. Puppies are cute. Agreed. But what was Troy like?â
âWas fine. Quiet. Whatever.â
Shane grinned at the ceiling. âDo you have a photo of the dog?â
âOf course. Did you not see my Instagram?â
âNo.â Shane was not particularly invested in social media, though he knew that Ilya was posting random things all the time. Shane mostly reposted official team posts, and info about the Irina Foundation.
âThere are photos, videos. So many things. Chiron is great.â
âIâm glad you made a new friend.â
Ilya sighed. âI wish I could get a dog.â
Yeah, Shane wasnât sure how that would work. âSomeday,â he offered.
âEverything is someday. I am tired of waiting for someday.â
âI know. But weâre still young. Weâve got lots of time.â
âAre we? I feel a thousand years old sometimes.â
âI imagine Luca Haas isnât helping. Whatâs he like?â
âNice kid,â Ilya said. âPossibly has a crush on me. I will let you know.â
Shane refused to acknowledge his own jealousy. âHeâs a good player. Smart, yâknow?â
âVery smart. But so young. Too young.â
âWe were younger than him when we started,â Shane pointed out. Theyâd both been nineteen during their rookie seasons.
âI was never as young as Haas. He is, like, seven.â
Shane chuckled, and it turned into a yawn.
âYou are tired,â Ilya said. âThat game looked tough.â
âOh, you watched, did you?â
âOf course not.â
Shane smiled. âTalk to me in Russian,â he said. âJust wanna listen to you for a bit.â
âYou are going to fall asleep.â
âProbably.â Shane rested the phone on his pillow, and rolled onto his side to face it. It wasnât a video call, so he closed his eyes and let his boyfriend lull him to sleep with words that Shane mostly didnât understand, but made his heart flutter all the same.
