"Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."- Albert Einstein.
Cam's POV
I told Lucas I would talk to Ashley but I haven't done that yet. Anytime I try to, I end up recoiling. I know, I know, so UnCam-like but it's not as easy as it seems. Lucas has been asking ever since if I've been able to, but I keep telling him the same answer 'No'. It's obvious he is slightly disappointed but then right now, it is what it is. I can't do much
It's a Friday and I'm back home from school when my phone rings. I pick it up to see Lucas's name flashing on the screen. I tap on the Answer button before putting the phone on my ear. I know what this is about but, still, I have to hear it.
"Amy!" He calls out softly.
I take in a deep breath, his voice affecting me, making my belly feel weird. Gosh! I'm a mess. "Lucas," I mention his name.
"You haven't, have you?" That is exactly what I've been avoiding.
What should I tell him? Perhaps the truth?
"I haven't. I've been freaking out." I admit.
He sighs, "She's your best friend, and you know perfectly well that she doesn't bite."
It's so easy for him to say.
"Then do it. Talk to her. I don't think I ever will be able to."
He stays silent on the phone for a second or two, and then a sigh follows. "Fine, I'll do it."
"You will?" I ask overwhelmed with relief.
"Yeah!"
His response made me smile so wide.
"Oh great!"
"Yeah."
"Tomorrow I'll come over so you can finally do it, I want to be around when you talk to her." I shut my eyes, imagining how it'd turn out to be.
"Okay. That's not a bad idea at all, it'll be in my favor anyway. Even if it doesn't turn out okay, which I know won't be the case, at least I'd get to see you. It's been so long."
I blush at his words, "You saw me at school today."
"I know, yet it still feels like it's been forever."
I didn't know what to say after hearing this. TME. Too much effect. This guy's having too much effect on me. It feels nice yet scary at the same time.
Third Person's POV
"Is it true?" Ash asks Cam. Lucas had had a conversation with her not long ago in his room.
So this was how it happened. Cam had come over to Ashley's house. Immediately she arrived, she went straight to Ashley's room, after they talked for a while and had snacks, she texted Lucas that she was there. Ten minutes later, there was a knock on the door, it was Lucas. Cam knew who it might be so she asked Ashley to attend to the person knocking.
When Ashley opened the door, it was Lucas. He didn't even wait for her to ask what he wanted. He immediately told her how urgently he needed to have a conversation with her. It was private, he'd said. Confused as she was, she informed Cam before following him to his room.
And as she returned to hers, she couldn't help but wonder why Cam, her best friend couldn't tell her such a big thing.
Cam who was sprawled on Ashley's bed feigns ignorance, "What are you talking about?"
Ashley sits beside her on the bed. "Lucas spoke to me."
She gets up into a sitting position, "About that? Uhm..." she didn't know what to say.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Ashley asks hurt and disappointed.
"Tell you what, that I l...liked Lucas? Didn't you already know? Weren't you the same person who told me that I couldn't like him?"
She furrows her brows even deeper in confusion, "But I thought you were not serious when you said you had a crush on him." Her features soften, "Besides I thought it was that kinda crush you normally have, where it doesn't last long but just takes a week or so to last. I'm sorry I didn't think you'd end up liking him."
"Well I do, I like him," Cam mutters.
"Then be with him, I'm not stopping you. I don't have the right to stop you two if you truly like each other. I'm sorry for what I said back then, I thought I was only looking out for you. Now, I know that I was so wrong. Come to think of it, no wonder Luc has been acting like a lost puppy these few days. I'm so sorry you both had to go through this."
Cam blinks, "It's okay, I forgive you."
"Thank you! " They hug each other.
Cam pulls away, a smile on her face.
"Go to him. I bet he's waiting for you."
"Nah let me text him first. Or maybe...." She smirks evilly, "I should play the 'hard to get' card."
Ashley laughs, "And I can help you, perfectly."
"Exactly! I shouldn't make it easy for him."
She picks up her phone and texts, "I just had a conversation with Ash. You told her."
He replies, "Yeah! I did. So will you be my girlfriend?"
She blushes about to type yes but then what happens to playing hard to get so instead she texts. "No."
A reply comes through immediately. "No?! What do you mean by that?"
"Not yet. I mean, I will accept to be your girlfriend but not until I'm certain you're not going to break my heart. I need to be sure you genuinely like me."
"I like you and I'm not going to break your heart, at least not intentionally. Haven't I shown it enough?"
"Not that I know of."
"What is it you want me to do to prove to you that I genuinely like you and that I wouldn't intentionally hurt you?"
Ashley who was reading the messages giggles. 'Cute.' she mumbles.
"I know right," Cam pouts.
"One month, I'm giving you a month to prove to me. Do whatever you can, I just want to be sure you're not playing with me."
"One month! One whole month? That is unfair. Why that long? What if someone snatches you from me? How will I deal with it?"
She blushes as she types, "No one's taking me away from you, Mister."
"You're in Ashley's room, right? I'm coming there right now. We need to talk about this face to face."
She turns to Ashley. "Oh my gosh! He's coming here."
Before Ash could even reply there was a knock on the door. Cam looks at Ashley in shock!
"He couldn't have reached here that swift, could he?" Cam whispers.
"What are you going to do? He's not going to back down, he's a feisty one." Ash whispers back.
"I guess I'll have to face him sooner or later, what better moment is it than now? Wish me luck."
"The heavens be with you," Ashley says.
She steadily walked towards the door, opened it, and there he was standing, confusion and hurt written on his face, air disheveled and wet like he just got out of the bathroom. He tugs her out and shuts the door behind them.
"Let's talk in my room."
"But..." She starts but he cuts her off.
"Cam," He calls her by her name. Okay, so it was getting messy but whatever, she wasn't backing down either.
"Okay fine! Only on one condition."
He sighs, "Sure. What is it?"
"That you would allow me to blow-dry your hair."
"That's not an issue." With that, he drags her into his room.
And when they enter, "Sit!" She commands.
He frowns, "We need to talk about us."
"Not until I'm done blow-drying your hair." She defiantly insists.
"But that's not the most important thing as of now. You can do that after we're done talking."
"I'm going to leave if you don't allow me dry your hair." She attempts to leave by taking a step in the direction of the door.
He stops her by grabbing her hand, "Okay I'm sorry. Don't leave! Do whatever you want with my hair but don't leave yet."
She smirks satisfactorily, "So will you sit now?"
"Yeah!" And he goes to sit in the chair facing his dressing mirror.
Cam smiles and goes to stand behind him.
"Where's your dryer." She asks and he points towards the drawer. She picks it up, plugs it and starts to blow dry his hair.
As she was at it, "Why don't you want to be my girlfriend?" He questions.
"I never said I didn't want to."
"But you implied it by not accepting to be my girlfriend."
"Don't complicate issues. I just said I would be after a month of being certain that I'm all in for this."
"At the beginning, it was that you didn't date blondes."
She chuckles, "I was only kidding and trying to get you to back off."
"And now?" He raises his brow, "It's the fact that you're not sure I like you back? Or is it that you don't like me back and you're finding it so difficult to tell me that you have to use other means to? Let me understand because I don't."
Okay, so the tables weren't standing in her favor again. Everything was getting mixed up and plain messy. She sets the blow dryer down. "Don't be ridiculous," She turned his chair towards her so she could look him in the eye. She bends down to his level. "I like you."
He let out a breath as his heart thumped from her words. He smiles, "And I like you even more." He gets up and she does the same. He pulls her closer and hugs her. She hugs back, arms going around him.
After hugging to their heart's content, they finally pull away and stare into each other's eyes, goofy grins on their faces.
"Okay, now that's enough." She squishes his cheeks. "Your smiles are affecting me."
"Is it bad that it is?" he mutters and she chuckles releasing her hands from assaulting his pretty face.
She smiles nervously. "Maybe." She admits as her gaze flickers to his lips. She shudders and looks away, blush creeping on her cheeks.
She returned her gaze to him only to find him smiling like crazy, so much that she was drawn to his smile, again, almost like he just won himself an invaluable trophy.
'I refuse to be tempted by this smile.' She whispers to herself.
"What did you say?" Luc asks.
"Uh, nothing. I'm heading back to Ashley's room."
A look of disappointment flashes on his face. "So soon?"
"Uh... yeah? Are you expecting me to spend the night in your room?" She raises her brows at him and he scratches his neck and smiles sheepishly.
She scoffs, "Seriously?! Won't that be spiraling out of control?"
"I like you and you like me back so I see nothing wrong with that. It's not like we're gonna do anything but sleep. Just sleep."
"Luc, everything is wrong with that. Besides things aren't done that way. We're gonna go baby steps. Okay?"
He stares at her distantly, "Okay."
"Besides there are so many things involved in a relationship and not just liking each other. For instance, trust, loyalty, communication, setting boundaries, and fidelity among others. These are important things we need to work on to build our relationship if we want it to work. And, I'm still not your girlfriend yet."
"Yet? What again this time around." He runs his hair through his hair.
"You'll take me on as many dates as possible, and the one that manages to melt my heart like butter, I'll finally be your girlfriend." She smiles.
"Fair enough! Just wait, and I'll sweep you off your feet." He says with determination.
"You have lots of thinking to do, let me leave you to it. Goodnight." She takes a step but he grabs her hand and turns her to face me.
"Wait! No Goodnight kiss?"
"Remember I'm not your girlfriend yet. I only kiss guys I date, sorry, the ones I'm in love with. Just pecks for those I truly like." She smirks as she brushes away non-existent dust from his dress, looking him dead in the eye. "Are you sure you still want me to be your girlfriend, at this point?"
"Of course." He smiles, "Only you and no one else."
"For your effort." She moves closer to him and pecks the side of his lips. His arm immediately goes to her waist and he tries to do more but she pulls away and places her hand on his lips, shaking her head in a no-no. He groans before removing her hand.
"Goodnight." He says and pecks her forehead.
"Goodnight." She smiles and he mirrors her smile.
When he realizes that she seemed distracted for a second, he pecks her lips.
"Cheat!" She playfully hits his chest and his smile stretches even wider.
And then she heads for the door, open it and locks it behind her, heart thumping loudly in her chest.
He touches his chest, as his heart raced deliriously in his chest. "She caused it." He mutters
