Chapter 142
Looking at the large piece of meat on her plate, Olivia didnât know what to say.
Tom and Jerry were still growing up. They praised Marthaâs cooking as they enjoyed the meal.
Seeing that Olivia wasnât eating, Jack explained, âWe only have limited food on the island. Just put up with it.â
Tom bit his lip. He didnât want to, but still, he picked up the meat from his plate. Then, he placed it on Oliviaâs plate.
âMs. Olivia, youâre too pale. Please eat more.â
Seeing the meat piling on her plate, Olivia felt her heart breaking even more.
When one was lacking love, even a tiny bit of kindness could light up their whole world.
âSorry, Iâm not hungry yet. You guys should continue.â
Olivia left with Connor in her arms. The island in winter looked even lonelier under the moonlight.
Not long after, someone sat down next to her. It was none other than the quiet Jack.
âYou wonât find any food if you get hungry later.â
âYeah, I know. Iâm not hungry.â
The man produced a small piece of mousse cake from his pocket. It was a little smushed after the ordeal.
âIf youâre not used to food in the mountains, this should suit your tastes.â
Olivia didnât decline it. The sweet and sour taste of strawberries spread in her mouth.
âAre you guys always so nice to hostages?â she asked in a low voice.
âNot hostages. Guests.â
Jack placed his palms on the ground, looking at the moon as he mumbled, âI know you look down on us.
âTo rich young ladies like you, we may be dirty and lowly ants. But even so, weâre trying to survive with all our might.â
âI donât look down on you, Jack. Letâs talk more later.â
The man looked at her. âOkay.â
Olivia picked up the yawning child, then stood up. âIâll put him to bed first.â
As soon as Olivia entered the house, Tom came in with some hot water. âMs. Olivia, Mom said that city people like you are very particular about cleanliness.
âSo, she heated some water for you.â
Olivia smiled gently. âThank you.â
âNo need for thanks. We donât have good food here, but we do have pipes.â
Tom secretly took out a piece of chocolate from his pocket. âI stole it back then. Itâs super yummy.
âYou didnât eat dinner, so you must be hungry. Come, eat it. Donât tell Jerry about it, though.â
Hearing the sound of footsteps, Tom hastily stuffed the chocolate into Oliviaâs pocket. The footsteps belonged to Jerry, who had brought some thick blankets.
âItâs cold at night, so Mom asked me to add another blanket to your bed. Iâll lay it out for you.â
Noticing Oliviaâs silence, Jerry hastily explained, âItâs made from cotton we picked in the wild. Mom sewed it herself.
âItâs already washed clean, and itâs very warm. Itâs not dirty at all.â
âYes, I know. Iâm just very grateful.â
Olivia patiently put Connor to sleep.
Connor was separated from his parents, but he was surprisingly wellâbehaved around her. He never cried or made a fuss so far. Soon, he fell asleep.
Olivia carried a small flashlight with her as she walked out of the room. Jack was still waiting at the same spot.
He wasnât wearing much, but he didnât seem cold.
Olivia turned off the flashlight, then sat down next to him. She wrapped the puffer jacket tightly around her.
âAfter spending a day here, I think I quite like your island. Itâs small, but everyone here leads a simple life. Youâre not bad. people at all.â
Half of Jackâs face was hidden under the mask. A selfâmocking smile appeared on his face. âAre we not bad people? We kidnapped a child and even asked for ransom.â
Oliviaâs gaze was firm. âI changed my mind.â
