Episode 14
âHa.â
With a low breath, Hestia tried to shake off the old memories, the ones sheâd hoped to bury as a distant memory, but which were still so vivid.
But the more she did so, the more vividly it rose as if it were yesterday.
âNo, no. Donât remember. Donât think about it.â
Hestia muttered to herself over and over again, her grip on the doorknob tightening until it was shaking.
Then.
âWhat are you doing without coming in?â
Theo grabbed the doorknob on the other side and gave it a gentle tug, and Hestia took a step forward, drawn by the force.
âAhâ¦â¦.â
Suddenly pulled up from her reverie, Hestia stared blankly for a moment,
ââ¦â¦Are you asleep yet?â
Her light brown eyes held Theoâs full attention.
âHow could I sleep first?â
Theo shook his head at Hestiaâs question as if to ask the obvious.
âOh. Itâs not because I donât trust you, Hestia, itâs because I havenât decided where Iâm going to sleep, donât get me wrong.â
Theo blurted out as if he wanted to.
âNo offense.â
Hestia smirked at Theoâs apologetic rambling and ruffled her faintly damp navy blue hair.
âNext time, dry your hair better. Itâs just for today.â
Then she locked eyes with Theo and gave him a stern look.
âItâs getting late.â
Hestia tugged on Theoâs hand and led him to the only bed.
Theoâs golden irises fluttered with an unexpected glint of panic, but he followed her without a word.
ââ¦â¦.â
When they reached the bed, Hestia tugged on Theoâs shoulder and sat him down, even though he didnât seem to want to lie down.
âYouâll grow taller if you sleep early, right?â
It was the smallest of nudges, but this time Theo complied.
âGood night, then.â
Hestia kissed Theo goodnight as he sat up in bed and turned to leave the room.
Halted.
Startled by the force tugging at the hem of her robe, she shifted her gaze to the owner of the hand holding her clothes.
âOops, sorry.â
Theoâs eyes widened at Hestiaâs startled gaze and he hastily hid his hand behind his back.
âI guess I should add one more rule to â¦â¦.â
Hestia spun around and leaned back, locking eyes with Theo.
Her smooth red lips curved into a wicked smile.
âNo more apologies from now on.â
Hestia ruffled her navy blue hair as if to warn him sternly.
âWhatâ¦â¦? No, that meansâ¦â¦.â
Theo tried to protest the ridiculous rule, but Hestia was firm.
âShhh. If you want to stay here one more day, youâd better follow the rules, and donât forget, Iâm the landlord.â
Hestia raised her index finger to my lips and made a menacing pout.
ââ¦â¦.â
Theo gave me a nasty glare and I forced myself to nod.
âSo whyâd you grab it?â
At Theoâs nod, Hestia looked satisfied and stood up from her crouch.
âUh. Well, asâ¦â¦.â
For a moment, Theoâs eyes widened in confusion, and he trailed off.
âTogether?â
Hestia echoed, seemingly impatient.
âI thought you were sleeping withâ¦â¦?â
Theo swallowed dryly and made a crawling sound.
The boyâs expression showed that he didnât like this frustrating situation where things werenât going his way.
Hestia leaned her ear closer to Theoâs, as it was a small sound that you wouldnât hear unless you listened closely.
âHmm? Ah. I see youâre still afraid to sleep alone.â
She listened to Theoâs question and came to her conclusion.
But isnât 14 old enough to sleep alone?
She wondered for a moment, but the river had changed dozens of times since her time.
Hestia chalked it up to the changing times, and let it go.
But Hestiaâs understanding was not enough,
âThatâs not true!â
Theo jumped to his feet and denied it vehemently, looking as if he had heard something outlandish.
Soon, Theo cleared his throat and spat out a low breath, then spoke quickly.
âHestia-sama can sleep here. Iâll sleep on the floor.â
Theo gestured to the bed.
ââ¦â¦So, the bottom line is you donât want to sleep alone?â
I guess that means you want to sleep in a roomâ¦â¦.
Hestia cocked her head in confusion.
Theo curled his lips into a tight line as if he was speechless for a moment.
âHaha. Itâs not thatâ¦â¦.â
Taking a deep breath of patience, Theo began to explain the situation.
âThereâs only one bed, so if I sleep here, where will Hestia-sama sleep? Home, like you said. The state. In. You canât make her sleep on the floor.â
âOh. Is that what you meant?â
Haha, if thatâs what you meant, you should have said so.
Hestia smirked and scratched her head.
âSo, Hestia, you can sleep here.â
Theo started to move away from the bed, but Hestia grabbed him.
âNo, no, no. The bed is yours. We canât have guests sleeping on the floor. Besides, itâs child abuse to put a child to sleep on the floor like this.â
Hestia slapped his hand away.
ââ¦â¦.â
Hestia rolled her eyes at Theoâs continued stare, not wanting to listen.
âIâll go toâ¦â¦. Yeah, your friendâs house, you can sleep over.â
Hestia rolled her eyes and hastily spat out the makeshift plan sheâd come up with.
Theoâs golden eyes seemed to sink lower as he looked back at herâ¦â¦.
Yeah. Must be the mood.
ââ¦â¦Friend, home?â
Theo asked after a momentâs silence, his eyes rolling.
âUh, yeah. A friendâs house.â
âAre you the same friend I met yesterday, the one with the power?â
His name was Linus.
Theo muttered something low, but Hestia didnât seem to hear.
âYep. So now go ahead andâ¦â¦.â
âNo.â
Before Hestia could finish her sentence, Theo took a step toward her, his eyes hard and unyielding.
What does he mean, no?
Hestia shook her head at Theoâs incomprehensible response.
âI donât mind sleeping on the floor.â
âWhat?â
Hestia exclaimed, startled when Theo suddenly tried to sit on the floor.
âNo, no, no. You can sleep on the floor, but Iâm sleeping at a friendâs house!â
Hestia quickly stopped him.
Theoâs brown eyes were filled with confusion as he looked at her uncomprehendingly.
âThatâs why I said no. Where else are you going to go out at this time of night, and are you sure that friend is trustworthy? Why would you sleep outside when your landlord left you alone?â
ââ¦â¦.â
Was she always this talkative?
Hestia narrowed her eyes at the swirling embarrassment, choosing her words carefully.
As reliable as her strong friend was, â¦â¦. but he wasnât human, so it was hard to say.
But he couldnât just shout out that he was a spirit!
âLook, Iâll just sleep outside, and Hestia can sleep in the bed.â
Oh, no?
Suddenly, a theory popped into my head that could explain Theoâs incomprehensible behavior.
âDonât worry too much, he wonât say a word about you to her.â
It was clear that I was worried about this.
Otherwise, there would be no reason for Theo to act like this.
Hestia put her hands on her hips, her eyes gleaming with goodwill.
But only for a moment.
ââ¦â¦.â
Theoâs brow narrowed, as if sheâd said something out of nowhere.
Confidently sliding her hands off her hips, Hestia scratched her head, avoiding Theoâs gaze.
Heâd assumed she was worried about being discovered, but by the look on her face, heâd been wrong.
ââ¦â¦Youâre not as clueless as I thought.â
Theo relaxed his hard eyes and smiled weakly.
âMmmâ¦â¦.â
Hestia still didnât have an answer.
As if she couldnât help but continue to search for a reason, Theo gave her the answer.
âItâs considerate.â
His voice sounded soothing.
ââ¦â¦.â
Hestiaâs eyes widened with embarrassment at the unexpected words.
To her, consideration was just a common courtesy, a way to get along with people.
So she had only one thing to say to Theo.
âYou donât have to do any of that for me. Just think only of you. Iâll do the same.â
ââ¦â¦Youâre not doing that, so Iâm doing it.â
Whoever started this caring thing started it.
Theoâs gaze took in the new blanket on the bed, then his yellow pajamas, then Hestia.
âIâm not used to being thoughtful, either, but I canât help but notice your thoughtfulness, Hestia. Look, youâre all over the place like this.â
ââ¦â¦.â
No wayâ¦â¦.
It canât be.
Youâre so scared to be alone, so wounded by so many betrayals, so desperate to fit in somehow, to be among people, to be the only oneâ¦â¦.
There were times when she lived breathlessly as if she were not among them.@@novelbin@@
But she knew that she could never fit in.
She was different, and they were afraid of her.
So she decided to forget it all, to leave no regrets behind.
It had been nearly two hundred years since he had made such a feeble resolution.
So Iâm sure you donât have any more of those little considerations left in you.
I see. The child must have gotten something wrong.
ââ¦â¦Iâm sorry, child, but youâre wrong.â
Hestiaâs usually warm brown eyes turned cold.
âMs. Hestia.â
Theo called her calmly, clasping his hands tightly together as if to say otherwise.
âItâs late tonight, so letâs call it a night, and weâll think about sleeping arrangements tomorrow. For now, Iâll sleep outside.â
Hestia spat out her words as if they were inaudible.
She walked past Theo and grabbed the doorknob.
âHestia!â
Theo called out again, but Hestia, who seemed to pause for a moment, didnât look back at him and only gave him a curt greeting.
âGood night.â
Snapped.
Hestia stalked out of the room and slammed the door behind her.
