I heard the CRACK of the rifle over my scream.
âGottverdammnt!â Zoller roared, the first time I had ever heard him angry. âAURELIO, SILENCE HER!â
Aurelio hit me across the face â hard.
Not a slap, but a punch with his fist.
My head snapped to the side and I quit screaming, momentarily dazed.
Then I heard the dreaded sound.
Clack-clack â
Clink.
âThere he is, hiding behind the bush,â Zoller purred as he adjusted his aim. âAuf wiedersehen, Herr Rosoâ â
Suddenly, the hunterâs hat blew off his head â
Along with the top half of his skull.
Blood sprayed the inside of the bell tower.
My white dress â and Aurelioâs fancy suit â were flecked with spots of red as a distant crack reverberated over the island.
Zollner slumped onto his side as a pool of red gushed out across the balcony.
I should have been traumatized.
I should have thought of my parents â
Or the man Iâd shot in the barn.
Instead, a white-hot surge of triumph raced through me, unlike anything Iâd ever felt before.
âFUCK YEAH!â I screamed.
Then I leaned forward in my chair and shrieked at Zollnerâs corpse. âFUCK YOU, MOTHERFUCKER!â
I turned to Aurelio standing next to me.
His face had gone paler than fallen snow.
âYouâre next, asshole,â I spat.
