I staggered over to Lucia and pulled a folding knife from my pocket, which I opened with a click. I knelt behind her chair and carefully cut the zip tie binding her wrists.
I had to be extra careful because I was losing feeling in my hands.
I knew I didnât have long.
âAre you sure youâre alright?â I wheezed as I moved in front of her to free her ankles.
I expected her to answer.
What I didnât expect was for her tiny hands to grab my face, force me to look up at her â
And then she kissed me. Passionately. Without any regard for the blood spattering my face.
When she pulled away, she was smiling and sobbing.
âI knew youâd come for me,â she whispered, and she showed me the toy ring Iâd proposed to her with. âI knew it.â
I smiled, overjoyed.
But I still had work to do.
I carefully cut the bindings on her ankles. Now I couldnât feel my hands at all.
âThere,â I whispered. âYouâre free.â
I tried to get up â
But my legs gave out from beneath me, and I fell back against the interior wall of the bell tower.
âMASSIMO!â she screamed as she rushed to my side.
She grabbed one of my hands, and her eyes widened with shock. âYour hands â theyâre so cold!â
âItâs⦠itâs okayâ¦â
âHELP!â she screamed as she turned to the stairwell. âHELP US, PLEASE!â
I heard Larsâ and Adrianoâs voices in my ears.
âI called the Widow. Weâve got a chopper coming in â hang on, Massimo â â
âMassimo, hang on, Iâm coming up, just hang on â â
âThank you, guys,â I whispered. But the voices were distracting me from Lucia, so I pulled the earpiece out and let it fall on the floor.
âI did my job,â I whispered.
Lucia got right up next to me and cradled my face in her hands. Tears were spilling down her cheeks. âWhat job?â
âI kept you⦠safe. I failed twice⦠but in the end⦠youâre okayâ¦â
She nodded frantically. âYou saved me â you did!â
ââ¦if⦠thereâs a baby⦠you have to keep it safeâ¦â
âDonât talk like that, please donât talk like that!â
I chuckled. ââ¦do you⦠do you still hate meâ¦?â
She burst into sobs and shook her head.
âNo⦠I love you⦠I love you so muchâ¦â
Those were the sweetest words Iâd ever heard in my life.
I smiled, tears filling my own eyes as I put my hand on her cheek.
If only Iâd been able to feel it as I touched her.
Adriano came staggering up the steps, clutching his side.
âOh no â no, no, no, NO â Mass, you fuckinâ hang on!â he shouted as he got down on his knees opposite Lucia.
He pulled up the edge of one of my bulletproof vests. I could tell from how he breathed in sharply that whatever he saw, it wasnât good.
He pressed both hands against my side. âJust fuckinâ hang on, you asshole â hang on, helpâs coming â donât you fuckinâ die on me, Mass!â
Lucia was bawling. She held my face in her hands and kissed me. I could taste the salt of her tears on my lips.
âDonât leave me,â she sobbed. âPlease donât leave me â please â you said youâd never leave me!â
I hated to break her heart like thisâ¦
To leave like her parents didâ¦
But the edges of my vision were growing dark.
ââ¦Iâm⦠sorry, babyâ¦â
I smiled one last time.
ââ¦I⦠love you⦠tooâ¦â
And then darkness took over completely, turning everything to black.
