Everyone was taken aback, then furious at her words. Had she not been so blatantly biased and overly harsh, they wouldnât have found her actions odd and gotten curious. Yet, she had the audacity to accuse them of being hasty?
âWhatâs the rush? Itâs just a DNA test. Or are you feeling guilty?â Heidi said harshly.
âShut up, on what grounds do you claim this is the life you deserve? Who gave you the right to snatch away someone elseâs life?â
Tears filled Heidiâs eyes in an instant. After all, she had sincerely regarded Petra as her mother for eighteen years and felt terribly aggrieved to be spoken to in such a manner.
âWhether itâs my life, or youâve stolen it from me, I understand now. You truly love your daughter, but unfortunately, Iâm not her, so I donât deserve even a shred of your affection, right? Since youâre so cruel toward me, why should I make things easy for you? I must reclaim our identities so that your daughter can only be the child of a despicable person like you!â
Anger surged within Petra, spurring her to lunge at Heidi and give her a good beating, but the bodyguard held her back.
âMr. and Mrs. Quirk, you canât! You canât treat Ms. Tabitha like that!â Petra, on the verge of tears, pleaded despite knowing it was futile.
Suddenly, Tabitha broke the silence. âI want to know the truth too. I need to find out if I have stolen someone elseâs life. If thatâs the case, I donât deserve to have it.â
After a night of contemplation, Tabitha still felt that if Heidiâs claim were true, she would be too ashamed/ to face Heidi. Her upbringing never permitted her to do something equivalent to taking something that belonged to someone else..
If⦠Mom and Dad really do as Alex suggested, Iâll move out and try my best to keep my distance from them. Otherwise, Iâll forever feel indebted to Heidi.
At that thought, Tabitha resolutely turned to Heidi and said, âLetâs go.â
Heidi cast a deep gaze at Tabitha, then turned and followed her.
Hanselâs and Astridâs attention remained focused on Tabitha, Naturally, Heidi noticed. She was jealous and couldnât help it. With a fierce glare, she spat at Tabitha, âThe moment the truth comes out, you must repay everything you owe me!â
Tabitha pursed her lips, reining in her emotions, refusing to cry.
âMs. Tabitha, please, donât go with her! Donât!â Petra pleaded tearfully, her eyes filled with heartache as she watched the two figures receding into the distance, paying no heed to her daughter in name.
Watching the medical staff advancing toward her, she struggled desperately. Her actions, however, only served to confirm the truth. Everyone who watched was filled with a sense of dread.
In the end, the medical staff forcibly took the needed tissue sample for identification.

After watching the medical staff leave, Astrid could no longer contain herself. Her usual gentle demeanor disappeared as she lunged forward, grabbing Petra by the collar like a madwoman. âTell me! Did you or did you not switch the babies? Tell me! Tell me now!â
Petra was momentarily stunned and at a loss. Suddenly, she pushed Astrid away. âWhy did you bring Tabitha back? Sheâs such a good child! Why did you have to seek the truth? Donât you love her after raising her for eighteen years? Why are you so cruel?â
Her statement indirectly confirmed something.
âSoâ¦. Tabitha really isnâtâ¦â Astrid couldnât hold herself up any longer and fell backward, but Hansel quickly caught her, his eyes burning with fury as he glared at Petra. âWhere have we ever wronged you for you to be so cruel? Whereâs your conscience? When you came to us for help, you were actually plotting against us. You took advantage of our kindness and switched the children! How could youâ¦â
Hansel truly wished he could kill the woman standing before him. Why are there such people in the world? Weâve done nothing to provoke anyone yet were met with such ill will.
Petra said through her tears, âI had no choice. All I wanted was for my daughter to live a good life. I had no other choice, it was all⦠it was allâ¦â
She had a habitual tendency to shift the blame, as a result, Tony was scared witless. âItâs not my fault! I only found out later. It was all this crazy womanâs idea. She treasures her daughter too much, believing that her daughter deserves a good life, so she had set her eyes on you guys long ago. How could she possibly stay impartial when sheâs serving in a household like yours every day?
She has gone mad.â
