Chapter 1166
The Ceo’s Convict Wife
Suddenly, her body quivered as a tall figure came into view.
It was Warren.
He appeared even leaner than the last time she had seen him in the hospital. Dressed in a sharp suit and wearing a stern expression, he triggered a tingling sensation in her nose, and her eyes started to well up with tears.
In that moment of seeing Warren, Amelia realized just how much she longed to meet him.
This longing wasnât solely because of Riley. It was more about herself. She simply wanted to see him, to know how well he had recovered, and to grasp the state of his health.
âWarrenâ¦â she called, but the volume of her voice was so faint that it was almost negligible.
Nevertheless, he heard her.
He had been walking and talking with someone as they exited the conference room. His steps abruptly halted, and he looked in her direction.
When their eyes met, Ameliaâs heart suddenly trembled.
In that instant, she felt like she might understand why Frederick had mentioned that Warren had already moved on from their relationship.
Because at that moment, the gaze he directed at her felt unnervingly unfamiliar, as if she were nothing more than a casual acquaintance to him.
It was as though every trace of their past feelings had vanished from his eyes.
Turning to the people beside him, Warren said, âYou all can head back for now and ensure the meeting materials from today are organized for me later.â
When Warren spoke in such a manner, even those among the people who were curious or eager to witness the scene naturally didnât dare to stick around.
1/4 00.13 In a short span, the group of people gradually entered the elevator and left.
Warren approached Amelia with deliberate slowness. His gaze remained indifferent, and his facial expression unchanged.
âI recall telling Frederick that I didnât want to see you.â His voice, cold and piercing, stung her ears like a steel needle.
âI-Iâm here to see you because of something very important,â she replied, gently biting her lip.
âIf you encounter any difficulties, you can seek Frederickâs assistance. Thereâs no need for you to see me,â he stated. âIâll let it slide this time, Amelia, but I hope there wonât be a next time. Iâll have Frederick take you back to the hotel later.â
With that, Warren turned and began to walk away.
Almost subconsciously, Amelia set the water glass she was holding on a nearby small round table and then urgently grasped his arm with both hands. âWarren, no matter what, now that weâve met, can you please allow me to say what I need to say?â
He lowered his gaze to the hands gripping his arm, then slowly shifted his gaze to her face. Suddenly, a sneer escaped his lips.
âAmelia, youâre still as self-righteous as ever. You said we should have no more debts between us, so thatâs how it should be. You said you didnât. want me to appear before you again, so I kept my distance. Youâve always been the one in control of our relationship. Now, you want to meet and meet we have. You want to talk, and Iâm somehow obliged to listen?â
As he spoke, he began to pry her fingers away from his arm one by one.
Her fingers, however, remained stubbornly locked in place, prompting him to increase his force.
Her fingers were starting to ache.
âIf you donât release your grip, youâll only hurt yourself,â he added impatiently.
Amelia said anxiously, âWarren, I know I shouldnât have disturbed you, but what I have to say is very important. I-I have a very important friend named Riley Summer. She helped me immensely during my time in prison and when I gave birth to Aider However, we lost contact over the years. Now, Alicia knows Rileyâs whereaboutsâ¦â
Amelia proceeded to express Aliciaâs request. âIâm asking if you could draft a memorandum of understanding and discuss it with your lawyers to work toward reducing Aliciaâs charges to probation.â
Warren gazed coldly at Amelia. âYouâre asking me to spare a woman who almost got me killed?â
Ameliaâs breath caught. While Aliciaâs initial intent was to harm her, not Warren, the end result had Warren on the operating table.
If there hadnât been enough blood available that day, Warren might truly have died from excessive bleeding.
âIâm sorry, I-I just wanted to know about Rileyâs whereabouts because Alicia claimed that Riley is living in a miserable state, possibly even worse than death,â she said, feeling her nose tingle.
âWorse than death?â Warren mumbled, his gaze growing colder as he looked at Amelia. âYouâre so anxious about a friend who is only âpossiblyâ living worse than death. But do you know that for all these years, Iâve been living a life worse than death, and when have you shown any care or concern for me?â
âIâ¦â She began to speak but struggled to find the right words.
âAmelia, there has never been a place for me in your heart and not a shred of affection. So even if Iâm living worse than death, youâve never cared,â he said, emphasizing each word. âBefore, I was willing to do anything for you out of regret, guilt, and my love for you. But now, longer love you, and naturally, things canât go back to the way they were before.â
I no âYou⦠Canât you help me just this one last time? Consider it a debt I owe you, and I promise to pay it back in the future!â she pleaded with a trembling voice.
âWhy should I?â His three words alone sent her spiraling into a pit of despair, causing her heart to plummet.
âHeâs right. Why should he?â Amelia contemplated. In the past, she might have leaned on his love for her to seek his assistance.
But with his love now gone, it was no longer her place to ask for his help.
âWhat can you, a lady running a concession stand, really give me? I 3/4 09:13 already have everything I need, and what more could you possibly provide that I lack? Love? Sadly, I once begged you for a chance, and you turned me down. Now, your love means nothing to me anymore. Even if you were willing to give it, I wouldnât want it.â
He forcefully removed her fingers from his arm.
âAmelia, I hope youâll keep your word. Letâs not meet again from now on!â His cold words echoed in her ears.
In the following moment, all she saw was his departing silhouette.
It was a firm departure, without a trace of sentimentality.
Ameliaâs fingers trembled ever so slightly, bearing a trace of pain.
However, in contrast to the overwhelming agony in her chest, this pain felt superficial.
She came to the realization that his words had wounded her just as deeply.
