Chapter 1194
The Ceo’s Convict Wife
The two sat down. While having dinner, Amelia couldnât help but ask, âWell⦠I have a novel⦠Is it with you?â
âNovel? Do you mean âLove You With the Rest of My Lifeâ?â Warren said.
âYeahâ¦â Amelia answered. âHe even remembers the book title, huh?â she mused.
âItâs with me,â he uttered. âBut Iâm surprised you like such books again. I only remember you liked this kind of book when we were in love.â
Ameliaâs face contorted in embarrassment. She, too, didnât expect that he would take her book away.
âItâs just to kill time. Iâm pregnant, after all. Itâs better to stay away from electronic devices.â
âIs the book interesting?â he asked abruptly.
âNot bad,â she said. She figured the novel should be good since it was on the bestselling list and was published physically, too.
âBut donât you think the two characters in the book are wasting each otherâs time? Staying by a vegetative person for 20 years and wasting 20 years of youth, and even though the other party wakes up in the end, theyâve both turned old,â Warren articulated nonchalantly. âInstead of wasting her feelings on a vegetative person, isnât it more practical to find a new love instead?â
Amelia stared at the man in front of her. âLove is never a commodity. It has nothing to do with practicality. The female lead willingly stayed by the male leadâs side because of love.â
âReally? Willingly? I think the female lead is overwhelmed with guilt instead! It seems like she thinks sheâs the cause of why the male lead becomes a vegetable, and thatâs why sheâs been weighed down by remorse,â he explained.
âItâs not guilt. If itâs because of that, why would she wipe his body so gently every day for 20 years? And why would she roll him around and apply medicine for him? Why would she be willing to do those dirty and tiring tasks herself? If all she feels toward him is guilt, why didnât she choose the easy way and find him a caregiver?â she retorted.
âThe writer probably has the same mentality as you, and thatâs why he chooses to pen it into a love story,â answered Warren. âIsnât it stupid to bet your life on whether another person will wake up?â
âDo you really think thatâs stupid?â Amelia fixed her gaze on the man intently.
âDidnât this man once bet his life for a chance, too? A chance that Iâd forgive him?â she thought. At that time, even though she repeatedly told him that she would never love him again, he still refused to give up.
At first, she assumed he was acting out of regret and guilt.
It was later she realized that he had done that out of love. He was willing to love her with his life.
Sadly, though, the current Warren could never love her like that againâ¦
âDonât you think itâs stupid?â he countered with a hint of amusement.
Her gaze dimmed. âMaybe⦠itâs stupid indeed.â
âAll right. Iâve brought the book back and will return it to you later. But itâs better not to read such books while youâre pregnant. Iâll buy you some books suitable for prenatal education later on.â After saying that, Warren lowered his head and continued eating.
Amelia looked at Warren for some time before she said, âDo you no longer believe in love?â
Those words slipped out of her mouth out of instinct. Even she didnât know why she would ask that question.
âThis is not the question you should ask.â He raised his eyes and stared at her coldly.
In an instant, her heart suddenly trembled.
âYeah, I shouldâve known better. Some things are no longer like before⦠she reflected.
Rosalie called Amelia and told her that Aliciaâs trial was scheduled for three days later.
âHave you talked it out with Warren?â Rosalie asked. She wanted to ensure that there were no mistakes on the day itself so that Alicia wouldnât have the chance to catch on.
âYeah, he agreed to cooperate,â Amelia replied.
âThatâs great. Iâll take care of the rest. You two just have to try your best to act like your usual selves on the day itself,â said Rosalie.
âOkay,â Amelia answered.
âIâll find out about Rileyâs whereabouts after the trial three days later. Riley⦠Riley⦠I must find Riley no matter what!â she thought to herself.
That night, Amelia looked at Warren and said, âRosalie says Aliciaâs trial is in three days. When the time comesâ¦
âI got it. I will do what I promised you,â he said.
She breathed a sigh of relief.
He glanced at her. âYou care so much about Riley because she once helped you in prison?â
âYes,â she voiced. âItâs easy to have many friends in this world, but how many of them would actually send help in the hour of need?â
âSo, youâre willing to endure the humiliation, beg me, and even sacrifice your dignity just for Riley?â he asked.
Ameliaâs eyelashes quivered slightly as she lowered her eyes. âBecause Riley saved both my life and Aidenâs.â
âSo, if I helped you find out the truth back then instead of watching you go to prison unjustly, would you-â Warren stopped speaking abruptly.
He nearly blurted out what he had in his mind. He almost wanted to ask if she would love him deeply and actually forgive him if she found out later that he had deliberately approached her for revenge.
âForget it. Itâs pointless to talk about it now.â Warren turned around and walked into the bedroom.
Amelia smiled bitterly and murmured to herself, âYeah, itâs pointless to talk about it now.â
Three days later, Aliciaâs trial proceeded as scheduled.
Alicia was initially afraid that news reporters or such would flock to the scene, but surprisingly, the streets were deserted throughout the journey to the court.
On second thought, however, she reckoned it was not that surprising. When news of the incident came out back then, they were all being covered up and barely being reported. Even occasional reports related to the incident were being taken down as well.
Natúrally, she supposed it was perfectly normal that there were no news reporters.
Of course, at the same time, that was the best for her.
As she stepped into the courtroom, she spotted Jasper.
Jasper looked very different from the way Alicia first saw him.
Deep down, Alicia despised him to the core. She believed it was his incompetency that landed her in this predicament.
Since the trial this time was not opened to the public, there were no irrelevant people.
In the midst of it, Alicia turned to look at Rosalie, the defense lawyer who was defending her.
âThe wife of the famous Mr. Youngblood in Strico and also a good friend of Amelia, huh?â she pondered.
-When Rosalie visited Alicia in person at the detention center, saying that she would be her defense lawyer, the latter was beyond shock. She had never imagined that the defense lawyer Amelia hired for her would actually be Jonathanâs wife.
