Chapter 183
The Ceo’s Convict Wife
Finally, the long call was over. Rosalie said, âWhat did your mother say to you? You look like youâre suffering, and you even mentioned the âkneeling on the keyboardâ part.â
âWhat else could it be? Itâs about arranged marriage.â Lillian rolled his eyes and said, âMy mom said heâs a hot commodity and she fought hard to snatch him away from other aunties. She wants me to meet him first.â
Lillian couldnât make sense of her momâs thinking.
It seemed like her mother believed that if she didnât get married in the next couple of years, she might remain single for the rest of her life.
âThen why donât you go meet him? Consider it an opportunity,â Rosalie suggested after some thought.
âNo, Iâm already overwhelmed as it is. Another blind date, and I might lose my mind.â Lillian was about to spit blood whenever she thought of her motherâs constant pressure to date.
âWhatâs bothering you? Is there something else?â Rosalie asked.
Lillian looked at his friend and said, âWhat if I told you that Iâm currently dating Callum? Would you be surprised?â Rosalie nearly choked on her own saliva. âYouâre dating Callum? But didnât you say he wanted to get revenge on you?â
âYes, he does want revenge.â Lillian nodded.
âThen whyâ¦â
âMaybe he wants to start dating first, wait until I fall in love with him, and then throw me to the ground to taste the bitterness of going from heaven to hell, just like they do on TV,â Lillian said..
âBut the question remained: would Callum really seek revenge in such a childish manner?â Rosalie doubted, especially since she had heard from Jonathan that Callum was ruthless. Otherwise, he wouldnât have inherited the White family as an illegitimate child and become the head of the family.
Callum even dominated his fatherâs original wife and her two sons.
âDo you really think thatâs the case?â Rosalie said.
âWhat other possibilities are there?â Lillian shrugged. âAnyway, Iâve thought it through. If he wants to take revenge like that, let him. Iâll-date him for a few months, pretend to fall in love, and when he finally abandons me, Iâll perform a heartbroken act. This way, heâll vent his anger, and maybe heâll let me go.â
Rendered speechless, Rosalie was starting to admire her friendâs thinking. âCould someone like Callum really be fooled by such a charade?â she wondered.
This man had probably encountered countless deceptions and conspiracies throughout his life. He must have developed a keen sense of discernment by now.
âHave you ever considered that he might actually have feelings for you?â Rosalie hesitated for a moment, remembering the time she saw Callum gazing at her friend through the glass window, as well as their encounter/when she and Jonathan went to the White family mansion to pick her up.
Although Callum had used the method of âkidnappingâ to bring Lillian to the villa, she had emerged unscathed in the end.
If Callum really intended to seek revenge, Lillianâs fate would likely be much worse.
After all, Lillian had not experienced too much darkness in her life. Unlike her, who had seen too much darkness in prison, sometimes to the point where she didnât even have the strength to cry.
âPfft!â Lillian spat out the pudding she had in her mouth, then quickly wiped it away with a tissue before turning to Rosalie. âRosalie, you should save your jokes for when Iâm not eating. This one is just too big.â
âI mean it,â Rosalie said.
The two of them stared at each other for a while, and then Lillian chuckled and said, âIf he really has feelings for me, it wouldnât work out, anyway. Think about what kind of family the White family is. If I really got together with him, my life would turn into a fight within a wealthy family. With my abilities, Iâd probably be crushed in no time.â
Hence, she figured it was best not to think about it. Once she had paid off her âdebtâ to Callum, she would be free.
âLetâs not talk about this anymore. By the way, you mentioned you found a new job before. Howâs it going? Is it okay?â Lillian changed the topic.
âItâs not bad. Itâs a small diner, and I make 1,200 dollars a month. Itâs not much, but my boss is nice, and I get along with the other staff there,â Rosalie said.
âThatâs good, but this job isnât a long-term solution. Youâre so smart. Have you thought about getting some other certifications so you can do a different kind of work in the future?â Lillian asked.
Rosalie smiled bitterly. âI canât even get a job as a front desk clerk. Even if I manage to get some certifications, it probably wouldnât make much of a difference.â
Lillian was dumbfounded. In the end, it was because of her friendâs criminal record. The only way out was to clear her name.
âIâll keep a close eye on that witness we talked about last time. The private detective said that in a little while, he might be able to find some substantial evidence. When we have that evidence, we can go to Sloummont and clarify things,â Lillian said.
âOkay.â Rosalie was grateful to see this friend who had been with her all the way since her troubles began. Only Lillian believed in her innocence, even when everyone else believed she was guilty.
âYou donât have to thank me. Youâre being too polite!â Lillian joked. âIâm counting on you to make a fortune after you clear your name. When the time comes, Iâll just focus on eating and drinking.â
Hearing this, Rosalie smiled unconsciously. âAlright, when the time comes, Iâll support you and make sure youâre well-fed.â
Lillian held her cheek and looked at the smile on her friendâs face. She couldnât help but say, âRosie, your smile is so beautiful. Your smile seems to have a calming effect on people. You should smile more.â
âSmile more?â Rosalie couldnât help but sigh internally. âSince when smiling has become a luxury for me?â
They had some more food and chatted for a while. Lillianâs phone rang again. After the call, she looked at her friend helplessly. âMy mother is calling again. I have to go and fulfill my dating duties. Letâs meet up again when we have the chance.â
âOkay,â Rosalie replied. She watched her friendâs retreating figure and couldnât help but feel a twinge of envy. Lillian had her own troubles, but at least she had a mother to push her to go on blind dates.
Unlike her, who didnât even have a mother.
Lillian rushed over to the location sent by his mother on WhatsApp. When she arrived at the entrance of the supermarket, she saw a man who looked somewhat similar to the photos her mother showed her. He seemed to be waiting for someone.
After some thought, she dialed his phone number and soon heard his phone ringing.
