Chapter 636
The Ceo’s Convict Wife
As he spoke, Jonathan turned his gaze to Rosalie once more. âIâm afraid your cousin Fiona wonât end up well then. What about you? Do you want to help her?â
âNo,â Rosalie said curtly.
âJust because she set Lucas up?â he asked casually, but his beady eyes never missed the slightest change in expression on her face.
âThatâs part of it,â Rosalie said frankly. âIâm no saint. I wonât help those who frame me or even innocent people again and again. As long as Fiona bears my identity, she wonât feel at ease and would want to deal with me. I have already considered the consequences the moment I told Calvin the truth.â
âInnocent?â Jonathan scoffed. âDo you really believe that Lucas is innocent? Youâre a lawyer, arenât you? Shouldnât you trust the evidence instead? Now, all the evidence points to Lucas.â
âI do,â Rosalie said calmly. âEvidence is nothing more than how things appear, anyway. If you read too much into these appearances, it may lead to the wrong conclusions. Isnât that true with my case?â
Jonathanâs eyes flashed. He fell silent.
Her old case was a pain in his heart.
âBesides, Lucas is a good person,â Rosalie continued. âHeâs simple and kind, and he shouldnât have been framed like this. Besides, it was because of me that Fiona set him up. I have to win this case for him no matter what it takes. Even if he loses, I will continue to appeal and find compelling evidence for him!â
âSince you want to win this case for Lucas no matter what it takes, how about I help you?â Jonathan offered.
Rosalie was stunned. She appeared a little nonplussed. âHasnât he been cold toward Lucas all this time?â she thought. âWhy does he want to help him now?â
Seeing the doubt in her eyes, he raised his eyebrows. âWhy wonât you believe me?â
âItâs not that.â She shook her head. âNow that he offered,â she thought, âIâm sure heâs going to help. Itâs justâ¦â Then, she admitted aloud, âIâm curious as to why you are willing to help Lucas.â
âThink of it as me wanting to spare you some worry for your babyâs sake.â Jonathan looked away. âIf I lose the case,â he thought, âIâm afraid the guilt toward Lucas will eat her up. Even if she didnât love Lucas, I wouldnât want her to feel guilty for another man.â
âCan you do me another favor?â Rosalie asked.
âAre you trying to find out where Callum is and why Lillian was so seriously injured?â he said as if already knowing what she was going to ask.
âYes. I want to know who hurt Lillian!â She gritted her teeth when she heard the latter half.
âAll right,â he agreed without hesitation.
She blinked, not having expected him to agree so easily. âYou will?â
âYou donât want my help?â
âNo, itâs justâ¦â She was surprised by how easy it was.
âSince you said you would be a good wife and would stay with me for the rest of your life, think of this as your reward,â he said as he held her right hand and caressed her ring finger as if contemplating something. âI can give you whatever you want, Rosalie, but you cannot have any other men in your heart!â
Stunned, she met his earnest gaze.
âI donât care if you hate me, blame me, or even⦠have residual feelings for me, but I will be the only man in your heart from now on!â
His voice rang coldly through the carriage, with a kind of authority that could not be rejected.
11:16 Fiona came all the way to Calvinâs villa with a swollen face, intending to complain about it. Most importantly, she wanted to tell Calvin that Rosalie had married Jonathan.
That was the only good news that she received after the beating she had endured.
She was confident that in doing so, Calvin would likely fall out of love with Rosalie. At the thought of Rosalie marrying Jonathan and becoming a rich woman, however, her heart seared with jealousy.
Unexpectedly, the security guard stopped her when she turned up outside the villa.
âMr. Gunner is not yet home,â the security guard announced.
âI can wait for Calvin inside even if he isnât home yet. He has never stopped me from entering before.â
Fiona said haughtily, taking her anger out on the guard.
âThat was before. Yesterday, Mr. Gunner gave us an order not to allow you to step in here again, Ms.
Haberly,â the security guard replied.
Fiona was shocked. âHow is that possible?â
âIf you donât believe me, you can ask Mr. Gunner yourself, Ms. Haberly,â the security guard said.
âI came here to look for Calvin because I couldnât find him anywhere!â Fiona thought, vexed. She was also stopped outside when she went to Calvinâs office earlier. Worse still, Calvin did not answer her call.
Fiona gritted her teeth. âIâm going in anyway. What are you going to do?â she said arrogantly. âIf you dare to stop me, donât even think about coming to work again. I will tell Calvin, and youâll lose your jobs at once!â
Just when Fiona was about to barge in, the guard blocked her and called the police.
Fiona was stunned. âHow dare you call the police?â
âSince you calmly.
insist on trespassing, Ms. Haberly, Iâm afraid you leave me no choice,â the security guard said Fiona clenched her jaw. Her face, already swollen from the beating, looked particularly ferocious at the moment. âJust you wait! Iâll have you all gone soon!â
In the midst of her tirade, she failed to notice a figure not far away, clicking madly on the shutter of the camera pointed at her from the shadows.
That night, a trending topic appeared online. [Mr. Gunnerâs Woman-Beaten Up?]
Clicking on the link revealed an unpleasantly unflattering photograph of Fionaâs swollen face outside Calvinâs villa.
The comments below were varied with various speculations. Some of them guessed that it was Calvin who had beaten Fiona up.
Fionaâs face contorted with fury when she saw the trending news about her. âA photograph like this is a stain on my life,â she thought, anguished, âand I fear people would use it to mock me even if I become a successful actress in the future!â
Thus, she hurriedly called her agent and asked him to remove the post.
However, the agent replied helplessly, âI canât. There are too many people fanning the flames!â
